Advice on Fostering Dogs : Dog Behavior & Training
hi I’m Justin share dog behavioural therapist and master trainer with bark Buster’s home dog training today I’m going to talk to you about fostering new dog so advice on fostering dogs I think it’s a really noble cause to bring a dog into your home to foster it to essentially take care of it until you can adopt it out to another family it’s just a great cause it’s a great thing to do so one thing that you really want to be aware of and is what kind of dog you’re bringing into your home if you can find out anything about the dogs history obviously you’d like to know some of the characteristics of the dog breed anything that you know of the dog’s temperament so you really know what you’re taking in to your home you really want to be patient with this process you want it’s it is about love but it is about establishing some structure it’s about establishing trust it’s bonding with the dog and ultimately it’s gonna boil down to some respect too so when you do bring the dog home most importantly if you have another dog or another animal in the house you really want to start off that introduction in a neutral territory and that essentially is by bringing the dog into a neutral spot whether it be a little bit away from the home but you want to have it in a somewhat of a controlled environment where the dogs are on a leash you don’t want to create any tension or worry or an intensity try to hold the leash very loose what you’re looking for is the dog to be smelling each other that typically is a sign of interest and you want to try to keep things calm if things start to escalate again you use that to defuse the situation to essentially snap the dogs out of it into a more calm or submissive state and when they seem to be identifying each other as trustworthy then you could bring the dog into the house but you really want to make sure that you have some boundaries established maybe walk the dog throughout the house on leash bring it into certain rooms but then ultimately keep the dog in a confined area until you can get to learn more about the dog bond more with the dog and establish trust again I’m Justin share dog behavioral therapist and master trainer with bark Buster’s home dog training
