Am I Safe? The Art & Science Of Canine Behavior Assessments DVD Clip – DTB876P
I just let it go right through okay why
should we evaluate at all it’s useful to
determine what the best home is for each
individual dog the reason I’m wanting to
get away from calling this test is that
it implies sort of pass/fail good bad
yes/no black/white I don’t like to have
that kind of connotation with it and
that really isn’t the thought process
that we go over it’s really rare that we
have a dog where we’re just like no you
can’t can’t work with them can’t do
anything with them not safe and good bye
right away it doesn’t happen very much
what we’re thinking about is what’s the
best home what’s the best situation to
put this dog in what what issues might
the dog have and can we work with them
and if they’re workable do we have
someone that can work with them and who
would that person be and how long are we
going to have them work with the dog and
what kind of progress do we want to see
and then are we going to reassess his
adaptability and with this shelter with
lakeland is it is it a breed rescue
candidate we always want to know that
right away during the initial evaluation
whether there’s an issue or not because
shelters get full okay so for that
reason it helps identify problem areas
that just help shelter staff may be able
to work with or that your rescue may be
able to work with prior to adoption and
that improves the chances that the dog
is going to stay in one place meant
because they tend to bounce don’t they
they bounce back and forth and the more
work we do ahead of time the more
likelihood that they’re not going to
bounce back and forth and that’s why
it’s separation anxiety is such a huge
problem with rescue and shelter dogs
because they you know they glom on to
you when they get into you in foster and
then they go out and they have
separation anxiety may be slight mild
and
come back in for a while and they go
back out for a while and it just gets
worse and worse and worse you’re going
to identify dogs that are not good
candidates for adoption so as much as we
love them not every single dog is going
to be adoptable and we have a duty to
not only protect the dogs and I really
am you know doing these assessments to
make sure that every dog it’s a very
very very fair fair chance but we also
have a duty to protect society and the
public and other people’s dogs I mean
how you know how would you feel if we
tested a dog that term was seem very dog
aggressive and very reactive and you
were out walking your dog and we placed
that dog and your dog got killed by the
dog we placed that we knew was dog
aggressive but we hoped that the people
would be able to handle because they
didn’t have any other dogs okay so I
mean always think about that what you
know how would you feel if okay because
some should just I mean it’s unfortunate
whether it was genetic and remember I I
think most things are nature and nurture
what they’ve got to begin with the
genetic stuff and then and then their
life experiences are going to shape what
they are and as much as we’d like to
save everybody we just can’t if you
wouldn’t want the dog in your home
you
