the American Bulldog is often mistaken
as being an American pit bull or an
American Staffordshire Terrier but they
are not related whatsoever American
Bulldogs are never overly aggressive but
nor are they nervous dogs by nature what
they are is a nice level of determined
confident and brave like I say they are
very confident in high energy with very
social dogs that form extremely strong
bonds with their families now however
that confidence and high energy can
spill out in some unwanted behaviors if
you don’t enforce good solid boundaries
right from day one so it cannot be
stressed the importance of early
socialization when sharing a home of an
American Bulldog because get it wrong
with them being such a large powerful
and energetic boisterous dogs they can
be very hard to handle when they’ve got
a little bit older the giant schnauzer
is known to be a very good-natured calm
and dependable dog especially when they
grow out of puppyhood as they are known
to stay in adolescence or a little bit
longer than other breeds they are very
keen Guardians and will take this role
very seriously without any training
whatsoever and you’ll often find them to
parole in your house and glad and sat
waiting for any kind of wrongdoers they
are also a very active dog and they like
to be worked and they like to have a lot
of exercise for those really good
temperaments too therefore to really be
able to shine through so if you want to
bring this kind of dog into your house
and let those acts
temperaments be a part of your family

plenty of exercise and plenty of mental
stimulation and you will be rewarded
with a superbly loyal and loving

dependable calm very reliable
temperament whereas the American Bulldog
can have excellent temperaments but they
just require a little bit more skill to
be able to get them there and with this
being about first-time owners we want
one that’s a little bit easy on people
that haven’t necessarily got the
experience and for that I’d give the
giant schnauzer the win round number two
the intimidation factor American
Bulldogs can grow all the way up to 71
centimeters tall we’re around 54 kilos
and that is packed into an amazing
athletic and powerful looking dog one
that boasts being longer in their leg
than the English and French cousins
which is what really separates them
other than that they still have those
very large broad heads that adds to the
impression that the Bulldogs are
tremendously intimidating and powerful
potentially scary looking animals they
do have that brassia phallic undershot
jaw which is an issue to be aware of
especially when you’re exercising them a
lot or in high heat and other than that
like I say they’re extremely big large
powerful breed typical of the Bulldog
type family charge houses are pretty
much what’s written on the tin with
their name but they’re giant dogs they
can grow real good 70 centimeters and
when I have 43 kilos now it’s undeniable
just how glorious this dog is especially
when well groomed and when well groomed
they do carry that know or look for emit
standards and miniature cousins now
there’s no mistaking them because of
those incredible moustaches and eyebrows
and the only real breed that comes close
to being similar is the Black Russian
terrier
now you commonly see them is a result of
that meticulous grooming regime which is
very important to prevent any matin and
it’s sure that they don’t overheat
especially because like I mentioned
earlier this breed is a breed that needs
lots of exercise so keeping on top of
all that fur and mass is something
that’s important now moving on past
their coats and pass those traditional
Mouser type heads they do have very
lean athletic bodies more similar to a
breed like a Doberman or a Malinois and
you combine all this strength size and
power into an extremely efficient
Guardian dog now the giant schnauzer is
not a dog to sleep on whatsoever but
when we’re talking about just natural
intimidation they do kind of carry that
nice lovely regal looking appearance
from their miniature and Standard
Schnauzer cousins which isn’t typically
overly intimidating whereas the American
Bulldog kind of has that Bulldog Mastiff
tied gracia phallic big fit head that
for the average don’t jo tends to carry
more of an intimidation factor and
therefore the american bulldog is gonna
win this round around number three
natural guarding skills now the American
Bulldog in that purest form of existed
in America all the way back is the 17th
century and unfortunately they were off
the news for bull baiting and as
fighting dogs now today modern American
Bulldogs can be traced back to those
original bull dogs and even though they
developed for inviting dogs to be more
guarding and working dogs they still do
have that innate more and all use with
aggression or dominance but with them
just being a little bit more keen and
ready to jump into action and some other
breeds now if you train them wrong that
can spill out into a disaster and
oftentimes you don’t need to train them
as long as you focus on them having
excellent socialization and training an
American Bulldog will act only when
needed but when they do act they are
very efficient in doing so Josh rouses
were bred to guard and protect from day
one now initially that was livestock
guarding and some cattle driving but
these skills transitioned extremely well
to wider guarding roles and quickly
caught the eye of local law enforcement
who have been using them in their police
and military work for years now the last
comment here in the UK and the US for
guarding work but over the last probably
five to ten years you really started to
see them more and more in the last
couple of years especially through
things like YouTube being able to expose
just how brilliant they are you’re
really consigned to commonly see them
working alongside the German Shepherd in
the Malinois even over here
the UK and over in the u.s. in our
police and military forces now like I
say the American Bulldog does have some
physicality ready to go built-in with
the breed but the Giant Schnauzer was
bred initially ready to lose guarding
roles and he’s a job that they have been
used fantastically for ever since now
I’m gonna have to give the judge now
that the win even though it is very
close just cuz the Giant Schnauzer is
probably a little bit more reliable in
terms of natural guarding skills for a
first-time owner as well as their
ability to be trained even higher in
guarding work around them before health
and life expectancy the average life
expectancy of the American Bulldog is
between about 10 and 13 years and the
conditions have seemed to affect the
American Bulldog the most are certain
forms of bone cancer both hip and elbow
dysplasia which by now you probably
notice in is quite common with larger
breeds they also suffer from a thing
called NCL which has got a crazy name
I’m not gonna try and pronounce but
breeding dogs should be tested for this
so make sure that your breeder is
testing for these issues it also so you
suffer for a man Nampally myopathy which
is a muscle disorder and again DNA tests
are available and on top of that there’s
things like kidney disorders fire roid
issues anterior cruciate ligament issues
cherry eye other issues with the eyelids
include an anthro peon and ectropion as
well as a host of various different
allergies the judge now says average
life expectancies between ten and twelve
years and both breeds like all breeds
will really be able to thrive and max
out their life expectancy when fed a
good quality high inequality grain free

be a healthy robust breed but they do
suffer from a few hereditary health
issues which an earth knowing about like
absolutely most breeds do and with the
judge now sir it tends to be things like
progressive retinal atrophy multifocal
retinal dysplasia and canine melanomas
and like again most breeds blown to
gastric torsion now I’m going to give

round and then might have a slightly
lower life expectancy but they are far
healthier and suffer from far less
common health issues which for me is a
worthwhile trade-off for maybe one year
and life expectancy for the entirety of
their lives to be a much healthier

training American Bulldogs are
intelligent and they’re like nothing
more than to please their owners however
they are a very powerful and confident
dog like I mentioned in their
temperaments and if they’re not
socialized early and often correctly
trained by somebody that knows how to
harness these skills as well as
reinforce an extremely structured
balanced boundaries into their lives
from day one they will start to show
that more independent side which will
make them more willful and stubborn and
therefore much harder to control Josh
