Ask the Dogologist: Common misconceptions of dog behavior
earn cash if you’ve been ripped off talk
to NBC Connecticut response NBC was
right on top of it we’re the only
station recovering big bucks for our
viewer NBC Connecticut connecting you
right here sort of a loaded question for
you do you ever look at your dog and
wonder what is he or she thinking I know
I do this all the time well today we
will be trying to get inside your dog’s
head a little bit sort of a little dog
whispering and explore some of the
common misconceptions that go along with
how we view our dogs joining me today is
a ben Carson from a dogology one of the
you’re the head trainer dog out in
Canton and in West Hartford and this is
Frankie this is Frankie she’s one of our
employees dogs actually Carly so we
brought her on today because she’s too
cute not to bring in she’s very very
very mellow she’s a good girl she’s
keeping a very close eye on the
Chamber’s oh they’re not moving around
so she’s keeping her since exit from the
camera speaking of protection let’s talk
about some of the differences between a
dog that is protective versus one that
is being possessive I know I’ve talked
to you about Bentley he’s kind of owner
protective yeah actually anybody
protected we could get him in his arms
in their arm yeah even if I were to come
in and reach for him sure it’s you know
he starts to growl and gets a little
protective a lot of people think that’s
cute right they like fact there don’t
that their dogs are sort of protective
of them but there’s obviously a very
different there’s a big difference
between sort of a dog who’s
appropriately protective right and a dog
who’s sort of you know hyper protective
and so it’s very important that owners
understand that difference and that they
teach their dog that they don’t need to
live with that anxiety of being
overprotective right teaching a dog that
you don’t you don’t get to possess me
versus you know you can you can be with
me but you can’t own me right and some
one of the things the reason why we’re
talking about this here is because a lot
of these things a lot of these
misconceptions actually may be stressing
out your dog and may be causing you know
more health concerns and we’ll talk a
little more about that but let’s talk
about dogs when it comes to bonding with
their owner versus what might be
considered separation anxiety for the
pet another yeah again a lot of people
really enjoy the fact that they say like
oh my dog follows me everywhere they
love me right of course they love your
dog is of course they’re bonded to you
but again there’s a big difference
between a dog who follows you around
because they love you and a dog who says
I can’t be without you that’s obviously
a natural stressor for a pack animals
separated from their pack but we want to
teach our dogs that being away from us
is okay and that it’s not a source of
anxiety all right well let’s flip side
coming back home the dogs all super
excited or and going crazy right is it
is it just being excited or is it being
excited that you’re there or being
excited that’s cannot along and
everybody loves when they get home and
their dog greets them excitedly right it
makes us feel good but sometimes we have
to sacrifice what we want in order to
make the dog feel okay so again that’s
the idea right so when you come home
what you might be seeing is not just oh
I missed you when i love you you might
be seeing i thought you were never
coming home and those are things that we
definitely need to work on at each our
dog like yes i love you too but relax be
calm or and if you’re calm then you can
get access to my affection but let’s not
reward that super anxious state that
your dog literally thought you were
never coming back talk about that we
talked about the health of your pet and
in being super anxious that is
counterintuitive to a dog’s health yeah
yeah sort of well being a lot of people
you know when we get into training a lot
of people think oh you know we should
train our dogs for the benefit of the
human right the dog walks politely on a
lunch and the dog does all these things
that we want them to do and that’s
really a secondary benefit to training
our dogs it’s really all about them
right we’re not really trying to train
our dogs for our benefit we can them for
their benefit a dog who has to carry the
burden of leadership is extremely
stressful right thing so you recommend
training for a dog not only for for your
for the owners sake but more so for the
dogs sake yeah you if you really love
your dog then you want them to live as
long as possible and obviously the less
anxiety and stress that your dog carries
the longer they’re going to live alright
and you have much more on that because
you take care of all the training at
dogology if you have questions for ben
