Australian Shepherds are Awesome!
hey hey fellow youtubers let me get this
on the way a little bit
hey guys I want to make a video up
instead I want to make a video mainly
about these guys this this is an
Australian Shepherd this is my dog and
these guys I can’t even begin to tell
you enough about them they are
incredible so what do they say about
these guys they say that they are highly
intelligent I’m sorry guys the Sun keeps
shining in so what do they say about
these guys highly intelligent so what
does that mean that means stay that
means you’ve got to do a lot more work
with giving them mental activities so
one can be just holding a piece of meat
while you’re talking making a video
because uh you know these dogs there’s
like they’re like from a cookie cutter
they are very very similar but you do
have differences between the competition
bloodlines and the working bloodlines
this guy here is Ozzie and he is pure
unadulterated working bloodlines how do
you know that they have a thin coat they
don’t have a real fluffy coat
and they have no white on the top of the
neck
okay competition bloodlines in
Australian Shepherds they have puffy
puffy coats beautiful but just fat with
their coat not their body and they had
this white that goes all the way around
the back of the neck that’s the two
easiest ways to tell the difference
between a working bloodline and the
competition bloodline so what’s the
difference between the two let me put it
this way from expect up from experience
a lot of work that’s the difference okay
so what do you have in urban areas you
mainly had these competition bloodlines
and they don’t have to walk him as much
they don’t have to exercise him as much
and they don’t have to do the mental
exercises as much these guys they say as
much as you have to give them exercise
every day
you have to give them mental chores
mental activities every day so how do
you give them mental activities you
train them you teach them tricks you
teach them fetch in a very particular
way you teach them not to walk out the
door before you you teach them to sit
and wait for their meal you put it down
right in front of them and they’re not
allowed to approach until you give the
command you don’t let them exit the
doorway without your command you don’t
let them get in the car without your
command you don’t let them get out of
the car without your command and they
appreciate that they love that they want
100% leadership from you so if you’re
willing to commit to always be observant
and aware of what command he needs in
that moment
in the next few moments then you’re
being a good Aussie owner what else you
need to give them that physical exercise
so it’s the dog walks and the fetch
primarily and I had one Azio in our dog
park someone’s tell me walking a dog
doesn’t wear off any energy I just play
fetch with my Aussie okay well that
guy’s an idiot I hate to say it but um
walking is instinctual to a dog they are
animals that roam so they’re from the
wolf and the wolf would always every day
circumnavigate their perimeter and then
they would eventually every when food is
low and they haven’t had a meal in a
little while they’re gonna exit their
perimeter and go on long hauls looking
for prey and in their pack so they’re
very very close to wolves in that regard
that they they want to roam they want to
sniff and then on the dog walks they use
up a lot of that mental energy by
analyzing all of the different scents
out there so if you give it an Aussie a
good 30 minute walk he’s gonna burn off
not only some physical energy but even
more importantly some of that mental
energy how can you show your dog respect
during the walk okay so you can ignore
the dog for the most part you can read
her cell phone but when he finds a scent
that you really are he or she really
finds interesting just stand there and
let him investigate you can keep reading
your cellphone and you know if he wants
to spend a full 30 seconds or a full
minute or two smelling that one scent
just allow him that because there’s
something really interesting and what
he’s found
he’s either found the scent of an on
adulterated female that hasn’t been
neutered or spayed he’s fine the smell
of maybe a raccoon or skunk he’s found
something that he finds very very
interesting so what’s happening in his
brain while he’s sniffing that it’s
going haywire all those synapses are
firing and he’s burning up some energy
and he’s learning about that scent and
he’s analyzing that scent so he’s using
a lot of cognition and cognitive
abilities when he’s sitting there for 30
seconds or a minute smelling that you’re
just reading your phone you’re enjoying
your phone why not just sit there
because my teenagers have a hard time
doing that they just want to rip them
away and just keep the walk going so
they can finish their there are
15-minute walk that I make them take the
dog on but no you want to afford them
that time so that you know I proved
something wrong when I first got this
guy and eight weeks old I went on the
internet to learn about the species I
was blind I didn’t know what I was
getting into and they said one don’t
ever have this dog in an apartment and
then two don’t don’t get a working dog a
working bloodline Australian Shepherd
unless you live on a farm so what did I
do I went against both of those and I
got you know a working bloodline
Australian Shepherd and I have them in
an apartment and I go to work every day
for eight hours so how in the hell have
I been able to make this work I got him
at eight weeks old is now eight more
than eight half well just like I’m
trying to meet his needs right now as
I’m trying to focus on making this video
by giving him this meat to get him to
sit here it’s kind of this that’s
analogous to how I’ve run my life for
the last eight and half years so as I go
to work and I leave my my life and I do
my chores and run my errands he’s always
in the background he’s always being
considered how can I meet my needs and
his needs as long as you have that
mentality you can make anything work
with any animal or any dog so what do
they need they need that mental exercise
they need a physical exercise they need
to feel like a member of the family
they say that this dog you cannot ever
have in a backyard they feel like
they’re being punished as soon as you
close that door that sliding glass door
that separates the backyard from the
house and they’re in the backyard and
they’re mine
they’re being punished if they’re not
beside you and they’re not extremely
tired they feel like they’re being
punished so how do you deal with that if
you got a job where they don’t let you
take the dog to the job you simply get
them tired before you go to work
I personally wake up at 4:30 every
morning to get this guy out I don’t have
to be at work until 8:00 and Here I am
waking up at 4:30 one of my nuts no I
just want to UM have a happy home and
you know happy wife happy life and you
know happy teenagers happy life happy
dog happy life I mean any living entity
that you have within your household if
they’re happy it’s gonna help contribute
to your happiness so you know you want
to meet your dog’s needs or he’s gonna
end up in a kennel it’s gonna end up
driving you nuts so I hope some of this
is giving you guys an idea of how to
make your showing Shepherd
because they are a little bit more needy
than most arms it’s funny they say that
Great Danes are on the top five of
apartment dogs it’s because they don’t
have to exert a lot of energy every day
they don’t need a lot of mental
exercises and you don’t have to burn off
a lot of mental energy every day now
granted if you live in a really small
apartment it might be hard to get by him
in the kitchen but you know what I saw a
guy live in a mobile home
not even a mobile home an RV with a
Great Dane and it was so funny when I
walked past him because that great D hey
I have a screen on the window that greet
Great Dane would smell my dog and stick
his pickled head fully out that window
of the RV and oh my god you know the
bark of a Great Dane right but that guy
had a Great Dane in an RV so you know
it’s every single species I mean every
single yeah I guess well every single
type of dog has specific needs that’s
why it’s kinda nice to have a mud you
know you don’t have such specific
requirements that you need to meet but
you know this guy since I’ve been able
to meet his needs pretty well he’s
giving me back so much but he just
doesn’t want to be left alone so I just
have to spend the whole eight and a half
nine hours including the commute away
from him he has a dog walker and I get
him exhausted before I go to work
but when I get home BAM I got a snap
back into like walking fetch mode and if
I have a social event on a weeknight I’m
really hard-pressed to try to get home
give him enough attention walking
exercise before I got a cut out again
and go to that social function so you
know I have family members that always
have social functions on weeknights and
they just don’t get it they think I’m a
freak
basically because they’ll hear me vent
about oh my god the the party’s at 5:00
I don’t get home until 3:30 that only
gives me like an hour to try to burn off
some energy of this dog before I have to
leave again and they’re like what you’re
too paranoid are concerned about that
dog it’s just a dog that’s like well
it’s my family member and he’s an
extremely smart dog he’s smart smart as
smart as a lot of eight-year-old
children I mean that’s pretty damn smart
they can have a vocabulary of like over
1,800 2,000 words I mean you know these
dogs aren’t credibly smart it’s like
having a human in a dog fur Oh God I
shouldn’t have said that though because
when you compare dogs to humans kind of
cross a boundary that a lot of like dog
trainers not dog lovers but like real
dog people that you want to meet the
needs of the dog they they don’t like
carrying that because now it’s just a
dress your dog up in human clothes
you’re not supposed to you know act like
they have human card
human understanding no dogs are separate
dogs are different they live in the
moment they don’t focus on the past they
don’t worry about the future you know
they’re in the moment so as long as you
can meet their needs on a day to day
basis and give them love and attention
exercise mental mental exercise you’re
gonna have a happy dog and when
unstrained Shepherds happy they give you
so much back the amount of loyalty that
they’re very protective I mean that that
can become a hardship because you know
every little sound they’re gonna bark at
every little person that comes and goes
there they’re very soft suspect of they
want to keep you safe they want to
protect your home environment whatever
that may be so
a great great fee I’m so happy I got
this guy they’re just they’re gorgeous
that are so protective and you know a
lot of people think like you know to
have a protective dog you got to have a
German Shepherd a pit bull or mastiff
but a lot of people don’t realize
there’s a lot of other breeds out there
that had that protection bred into them
on purpose so this is a shepherd
Shepherds are gonna be protective
because what would happen with the Sheep
that’s a very valuable product if you
steal one of those sheep you can feed
your family maybe back in the old days
for a weaker or more a week or two so
they had to be protective these sheep
were being stolen so not only were they
protected but they were actually bred to
dislike males because who would come in
the middle of the night would it be
children women no only the man would
come at night to steal sheep so they
were actually bred to really hate men
they loved women they loved children but
if they don’t know a man he’s a stranger
they’re gonna be suspect except for the
competition bloodlines they have had a
lot of that stuff right out of them but
this guy man when he was younger any man
he didn’t know he didn’t like him he’d
bark at him
especially at dusk and Twilight if he
saw any man at dusk and Twilight that
was an enemy and even worse if the guy
was dressed like a tough guy leather
jacket beanie you know blue jeans boots
whatever whatever you think is a
stereotypical tough guy he would really
negative it’s so funny I tell people
this and and they have a hard time
believing it but my dog if he sees a
stereo stereotypical bad guy like in the
seventies movies that I always had that
stereotype
stereotypical bad guy you know like a
dock worker with the dock little beanie
pulled down and a trench coat or an
overcoat he picks up on what the
stereotypes of bad guys are and if you
see a stereotypical bad guy in the TV
he’ll jump off the couch and start
assaulting that guy with with loud
vicious barks and it’s so amazing to me
that his brain picks up on the same
thing as our brain is what a
stereotypical bad guy looks like right I
don’t know how that works it’s amazing
to me though so anyways I wanted to
bring in a little bit of motorcycle
stuff in the in the long run because
when I got this guy I thought okay I can
get him to get on the back of my
motorcycle eventually he’s a little bit
larger than most dogs to travel on
motorcycles yeah but you know I saw as a
dog that just wants to be with you all
the time and they they literally have
her feelings if you leave them unless
they’re extremely tired so then they’re
like okay go ahead go ahead I just want
to eat my snack you leave me as you
leave and go to sleep so that’s why it’s
so great to get them tired but
I kind of lost my train of thought oh
yeah on the motorcycle so I wanted to
get this guy avenged on the back of my
motor so I was gonna build a little
platform with like a milk crate and a
wood bottom and put it on the back of my
motorcycle
make sure it’s secure strap it off with
a little carpet down on the wood I was
gonna really enjoy that and you know go
up to Rock store Neptune’s net with this
great Australian Shepherd well my I
bought my daughter used to Volkswagen
bug 2003 but it was adorable
convertible and we would drive around
when we first got it a lot with the top
down and we’d have our dog in the back
Ozzy and even if the windows were rolled
up he just looked miserable I had videos
of him just like so miserable with all
the wind like I guess would be in his
hair around his face but I really think
he looked so miserable that even if I
got him little goggles he just really
wouldn’t enjoy the experience so I
didn’t push it
but you know eventually I think I’m
gonna be retired and I’m gonna do a lot
of traveling on on either this Harley I
have now because it’s 2016 Softail and I
could easily put on some I never want a
windshield I’m never going for a
windshield I don’t like them I’ve never
had one actually so I don’t know where
if I speak but I just love not having
windshield the closer I can get to just
bare essentials I don’t have a stereo I
don’t have cruise control I just like
having a motorcycle and an engine
between my legs especially a big old
fucking Harley engine scuse my language
but
you know so I just kind of gave up on
that idea and just had to accept that
he’s not gonna be a motorcycle dog but
you know you watch you watch a lot of
people that have their littler dogs and
they take them on their Harley’s so I’m
thinking that you know he is now eight
half and these dogs normally live to be
about 14 16 max so another 8 years you
know when he passes all be retired I
think I’m gonna get a French Bulldog
those dogs are so like strong and
demanding I love that that’s I love
people that are stubborn I’m Irish
I love fighters I love people that are
just you know they got a backbone and
they’ll repel if they’re being
mistreated and you know those little
French bull I mean no not French Bulldog
I’m sorry what are they called
bah no not Boston Terrier they they look
kind of similar yeah I think I’m talking
about the French Bulldog that my niece
has they’re really really good-looking
really really smart but just stubborn
and strong-willed my nieces French
Bulldog and live for several years with
my brother’s big beautiful blue nose
pitbull and this I mean the weight
difference was incredible this dog
weighed a third of the weight of the
pitbull yet he dominated that pitbull
and then the pitbull had all these teeth
teeth marks all over his shoulders to
show to prove how dominated he was and
his body language around that dog was
just always ears down like those sad
puppy-dog eyes like I’m submissive don’t
don’t don’t bite me anymore
and I just love that both those guys are
and they’re small so I can travel on my
motorcycle with one of those dogs I
shouldn’t be saying this in front of
Ozzie
but I think he’s sleeping so if you guys
found that interesting I was happy I can
tie in a little bit of motorcycles there
at the end I hit the like button if I
would love to hear some feedback you
know I mean one other Australian
Shepherd video but I didn’t really get
many people giving me any feedback
comments so I would love to get a little
bit more feedback from Australian
Shepherd owners you know maybe some from
people that own competition bloodlines
you know maybe I’m wrong in the wrong
educate me tell me that maybe I’m that
competition bloodlines can have be very
demanding too you know I haven’t owned
one of those but I’m just going off what
I read and what I’ve experienced having
one of these pure bloodlines about a
working Australian Shepherd
both his parents were from a ranch in
Missouri and there were pure working
dogs so he’s he’s got he’s got it and
you know what though I loved Cesar
Millan and he always said I think
everything happens the way it’s supposed
to happen so just go with it if you get
a dog that just seems like really hard
to manage and hard to meet his needs try
to rise up to the occasion and meet
those needs because in the long run due
to his experience he has found that
everyone that ends up trying really hard
to meet the needs of their dog ends up
benefiting from it in the long run and
this guy the first two years drove me
nuts I didn’t drive home every
lunch I mean he just didn’t want to do
the discipline dog walk that I talked
about in my other video but I did I
stuck through it I did my best to meet
his needs and you know everyone
compliments me on what a beautiful dog I
have on what it will behave dog I have
and what a well-trained dog I have on
what a smart dog I have I’m you know I
mean it’s just endless and it’s mainly
due to the breed but I’d like to think
it’s a lot to do with how I work with
them and trying to meet his needs and
then you know I’m always out walking
with the dog which is great exercise for
me I’m always out meeting people we’re
always at dog parks and just public
parks off leash and you know it just it
brings a lot into my life that I
probably wouldn’t be forced to do if it
wasn’t for him and sometimes we need
that motivation we need something to
force us to do what’s good for us and so
I really think everyone that has a dog
and feels like they’re having a hard
time meeting their needs I really think
it’s just best to just buckle up step up
to the plate
do your research on the internet buy a
few books and find out what do I need to
do gosh darn it to meet this dog’s needs
so he can be happy because when you got
that happy dog you’re gonna have a
happier home so I hope that was um
informative
I hope Australian Shepherd owners that
may be tuned in found that interesting
if so hit the like button if you guys
are just pure motorcyclists and you
really hated that you’re like why in the
heck did I pushed play hit the dislike
but I guess but maybe leave a comment
why you didn’t like it I don’t have a
dog why did you make this I thought you
were about biking so nobody have fun
with the issue leave comments hit like
just like I don’t care
I’m not in this for the money I’m in
this for myself and trying to just get
some information out there to anyone
that might need it
you know I’m 52 now and so I’ve been
able to acquire a fair amount of
information on a few different topics
but I’ve really enjoyed the support I’ve
been getting from my followers my
subscribers and this has been a fun
journey for me now I’ve been making
these videos now for I guess like two
and a half three months and it’s been
nothing but a positive experience for me
so everyone it’s evening time here for
me Friday evening I don’t know what time
it is or where you are you know but
enjoy your dogs enjoy your motorcycles
enjoy your family and you’ll be a better
person for it thank you so much for
watching have a good day
