Best Breeding Tips Ever! How to Breed Your Mini Dachshunds: Plus Week 1 of Cookie’s Pregnancy!

I don’t know everyone this is Jen and
I’m here today to talk to you about how
to successfully breed your miniature
dachshunds and throughout this video I’m
also gonna discuss the different stages
of the pregnancy give you some views on
what she will look like and what to
expect this is my girl right here my red
this is cookie and over here is my male
he is a dapple as you can see and this
is biscuit don’t worry about that it’s
kind of hard to play with the dogs in
video at the same time but as I was
saying this is my biscuit away right
here see how lovable and awesome they
are they’re just my little babies I
remember my first time as a breeder I
had so many questions
after all I wanted to be a responsible
breeder I wanted to make sure that I did
everything I could to keep my girl
healthy happy during the breeding the
pregnancy and the well-being I
researched everything I could I read
information on dozens of websites and
watched dozens of youtube videos the
information that I ran and I found was
helpful however it took me hours upon
hours of reading and researching and
about everything I read was different in
one way or another and also whenever I
would watch the videos it wouldn’t
really show pictures of the different
stages like how big their stomach would
be or what you would feel or what you
would see
and so I decided that I would record
this pregnancy the purpose of this video
is to give you advice on what to expect
during breeding what to expect during
the pregnancy and what to expect during
the whelping of your beautiful mini
dachshund pups I will also give you some
great advice which will help you keep
your girl healthy happy and stress-free
during her pregnancy so the first thing
I want to talk about is how to breed
your mini dachshunds the first step is
to pick out a pair of dachshunds that
get along well together preferably your
own pair and a parent which both parents
have a good temperament this will make
things less stressful for both dogs and
having a good temperament will likely
ensure that your puppies will also have
a good temperament when picking your
pair it is recommended that you pick two
different types of dachshunds what I
mean by that is that they should not
both be dappled it is said that breeding
to dappled minis can create
double-double pups sometimes when a
double-double pup is born it can have
defects such as blindness and hearing
loss they can even be born without eyes
or with deformed limbs on occasion
although not all doubled apples are born
with these problems why take the risk
as you saw I have two beautiful babies
here I have a dappled male biscuit and a
red female cookie and although I’ve
never had doubled a both puppies they
have produced for me some very beautiful
pups they’ve had anything from red
Longford Longford apples short-haired
apples reds cream color and solid black
with tan markings and I’ll tell you what
all of those puppies are beautiful
they’re worth just as much
as a double dabbled I’ve had no problems
at all getting families for them they’re
just beautiful puppies beautiful
beautiful puppies they don’t have to be
double dabbled with blue eyes for people
who love them so I just find that it’s
better not to even take that risk I love
my babies so much and if any of my
puppies were born with deformities or
blind or had hearing loss I would just
feel so horrible so once you have
decided on the pair you wish to breed
the next step is to watch for your girl
to go into heat cook ecosan a heat once
every fall and once every spring about
every five to six months this can vary a
little bit from dog to dog sometimes
figuring out if your girl is in heat can
be quite difficult
cookies very vain and keeps herself well
groomed so I can never tell by finding
blood as she cleans herself constantly
and she cleans anything she leaves
behind so if you are lucky you may see
some spots of blood this is one sign if
you do see blood usually by that time
she’s probably about five days to a week
and her into her cycle another way that
you can tell is by looking at her vault
and I’ll show you sorry it took a girl I
know she didn’t want to be messing me up
like that I just messed up her nice
comfy little spot didn’t I girl when
cookies and hey her vulva swells and the
further into her cycle she gets the more
swollen her vulva gets the other thing I
noticed but can differ from dog to dog
is that when cookie is in heat her
behavior changes a little bit
she becomes super lovable even more
loveable than she usually is she becomes
even more vain and she sleeps a lot so
those are some of the things you can
watch for to know that your girl is in
heat once you know that
and he the next step will be to know
when to breed her although you may
clearly be able to see that she isn’t
heat this does not mean that you should
try to breed yet you’re a girl and the
male will know when the time is great
usually for the first week to 12 days
the girl may reject the male not
necessarily to be mean to him but will
warn him to keep his distance she may
growl at him a little bit this is normal
your girl will let him know when the
time is right trying to force them to
breed when it’s not the right time would
always stress her girl and there would
be a smaller chance for them to conceive
between the 12 and 15th day every is the
best time typically for them to conceive
as before that time she likely has not
dropped eggs and in the proper position
for conception until that time when the
time is right you will know it I promise
any patient when the time is right you
know will start going kind of crazy the
line at her Paulette her even though as
far as getting a wily coyote grin on his
face this will be a constant annoyance
for about a week in my experience my
kemal will know he’ll sniff her and
you’ll lick her to test if he’s ready I
know it’s kind of gross
but he can tell by how she smells our
taste if it is time or not
now even though the mail may be starting
to go a little crazy this does not
necessarily mean that it is the right
time your girl will let him know just
let everything happen naturally when
she’s ready she will literally start
teasing him Vicky will go over to kiss
it and put her butt in his face and then
run off trying to get him to chase her
when he gets to her then she’ll stand
there put her tail to the side and
before you know it they’re a lot if you
see your girl way down or stay in there
with her tail curved to the side this is
a sure sign that she is ready there are
some little tips I’ve learned to help my
dachshunds successfully breed with as
little stress as possible if you are a
first-time breeder here are some things
you should know the key is to keep both
of your dogs as comfortable and
stress-free as possible it is okay if
your girl prefers the way down during
breeding rather than standing your male
will likely twist and break over so that
they will be but – but breeding can take
a while I have witnessed my dogs walk
for an hour they get tired after a while
so just let them position themselves how
they want to your girl may cry out for
the first few minutes especially if it
is her first time it may seem like she’s
being hurt but the crying at first is
normal don’t panic she will calm down
after a few minutes it’s not required
but I do like to comfort my dogs for
their loss my husband and I or one of my
children I will sit with our legs around
them and just talk to them and Pat them
until they’re done
this keeps them calmer and more still
you kind of want to keep an eye on them
so that they don’t hurt each other well
they’re locked
sometimes when cooking he feels she’s
had enough she will lightly nip that
biscuit but she’s never hurt him
try to avoid your girl from biting at
your mail if she seems to be getting
aggressive now that your dogs have lost
you just have to be patient and wait so
far from my experience their connection
lasts from about 12 minutes to about 20
minutes but it can last for up to an
hour maybe even longer
the longer they are locked the better
the chance for conception if they hadn’t
locked for at least 12 minutes there is
a small chance that the lock may not
have been successful I have found that
the best way to ensure success is by
breeding them three times over a three
day period of time breeding them several
times a day only stresses them and does
not change the amount of puppy she will
have in fact just like humans the male
dog needs time to recoup and regenerate
it is best if you breed once and then
wait 24 hours between the next time you
breathe keep them at heart if you can at
night time my husband sleeps on the
couch this biscuit and cookie shares the
bedroom with me we place the gate in the
kitchen so that during the day we can
keep them separated until we’re ready to
continue breeding this will help him
renourish his supply and give a better
chance for a successful conception once
the three times event have happened try
the best you can to keep them away from
each other and very very very important
if you have more than one male
especially the different breed make sure
to keep them away from her too or she
may have mixed breed pops or could have
a large litter in which may get your
girl complications during labor
once your pair has successfully walked
for the first time and this is very very
important and it has to be after this
first time make sure to write the date
the time and the amount of time that
they were lost and then look at your
calendar and count 63 days from the time
of that date this will be your girls due
date so for cookie GBC here I have
written on an index card she conceived
on November 10 2017 at 433 p.m. it
lasted till 454 p.m. which is about 20
minutes and her due date will be January
12 2018 it’s very important to write it
down somewhere and put it somewhere safe
so that you don’t forget this will help
you be a little bit prepared I usually
like to make sure that I have a nesting
area for her ahead of time so that she
can get acclimated to it and I get puppy
formula which I’ve never had had the
need for so far but just to be on the
safe side I always make sure I have
puppy formula
and you know I just make sure I have a
lot of towels and things that I need so
if you know the due date this kind of
helps you be a little bit better
prepared so once you write that down
like I said 63 days from the time of
that first vlog is going to be your
girl’s due date it’s likely that she
will have the copies on her around that
day sometimes if it’s a larger litter
she may have them up to five days
earlier or she can even have them if
your days late so once you know that
your girl is likely pregnant um you do
want to put her on a high-protein diet
so you want to put her on a dog through
that time protein normally on a normal
basis I feed my dogs Purina Pro Plan
lamb in rice this protein gives them lot
energy it keeps their fur nice and shiny
it keeps it good weight on them they
don’t get overweight they don’t get
under weight during cookies pregnancy
though I do change from the lamb and
rice to pure you know pearl clean and
chicken and rice it’s not very expensive
I think it’s about 13 to 18 dollars bag
so it’s really not that much of a
difference in price compared to the
other dog foods it doesn’t have to be
the most expensive food and either the
Purina Pro Plan has really kept my dogs
healthy all through their lives so far
she’s had healthy puppies every litter
she hasn’t gotten emaciated during any
of her pregnancies
has it become emaciated after having her
puppies or during nursing so I can tell
you from personal experience that
they’re carrying a chicken and rice is
very healthy it keeps them very healthy
and I haven’t had any problems at all
now the reason why I change from the
lamb and rice to the chicken and rice is
because the chicken seems to be a little
bit gentler on her stomach than the lamb
so it’s definitely good during their
pregnancy to make sure you give them a
high protein diet it’ll give her energy
during her pregnancy it’ll give her
energy during her labor and it’ll keep
her energetic after her labor so if our
cookies had three litters and she
remained healthy she had five healthy
puppies each litter so I believe that a
healthy diet and lots of love for me
kind of contribute kind of contributed
to that so later in the video as cookie
gets further along I will change our
food up again to a homemade mixture
which I’ll share with you at that time
it’s not the typical burger and rice
mixture that a lot of people use
I don’t switch her to dog food that’s
puppy food because I don’t believe that
she gets everything that she would need
on the puppy food and said I keep her on
the chicken and rice and then like I
said I have my own kind of homemade
recipe
it contains dairy product protein high
protein high and dairy products and it’s
something she really enjoys eating and
it really keeps her healthy so I’m going
to share that recipe with you later as
she gets further along in her pregnancy
she’s ready to be switched to that I
usually don’t switch them to that or
switch her to that until about two to
four weeks before she’s gonna have
puppies it just depends on how big of a
litter she’s having if it seems like
it’s taking
a little bit out of her and she seems to
start getting a little bit skinny
because the puppies are taking it all
from her and then I switch her a little
bit sooner to the homemade mixture so
I’ll be happy to share that with you
when cookie gets a little bit further
along in her pregnancy here but for
right now like I said I just have her on
Purina and chicken and rice
so anyways for is the breeding portion
of this video I’ve concluded with the
breeding portion and now I just want to
share with you
cookies progress like I said she became
pregnant on November 10th 2017 it’s now
November 20th so it’s been about nine
days ten days so a little bit over a
week and I just wanted to go over with
you what you could expect in the first
week I’m usually the first week there’s
not a whole lot of change to notice you
might have noticed that her look nipples
are a little bit more enlarged let’s see
let me show ya her cookie girl holy dude

oh so cookies had litters before so her
nipples you can see they’re a little bit
swollen already even though it’s only
been a week if this is the first time
for your girl she may not be very
swollen yet you might not be able to
really see any difference like the first
week normally you really can’t see much
I mean as you can see as you can see
she’s still skinny you can’t really tell
it she’s pregnant I mean pretty much
just her normal so still for rape you
know
hey you know I got you all excited huh
like there’s really usually not a whole
lot you can tell especially early on in
the pregnancy it takes quite a while for
you to be able to notice but I am gonna
go ahead and put a video up week by week
so that you can see how she’s
progressing as you could see she’s
skinny mini right now oh I see you know
how much of a difference you won’t be
able to feel anything right now you
won’t be able to really tell that she’s
pregnant right now either then she’s
still a little swollen but beyond the
fact of her being super extra lovable
she’s constantly licking my feet at
night my feet seem to be her little
practice babies I guess she looks
something for like an hour at a time
and then she lays on them and protects
them so other than that first week
there’s really not a lot to expect she’s
just gonna be super lovable at least my
girl is mm-hmm
but you won’t start noticing anything
right away so anyway this is pretty much
week one a little bit over a week of
copious pregnancy so she had a little
moment in playtime and as you can see
she’s back under the blankets but anyway
I just wanted to say that I haven’t seen
a lot of videos or pictures that really
show you week by week what their
stomachs look like or how they’re
behaving or what their little pregnancy
symptoms are so week by week just to
kind of be a little bit informative give
you guys some information so that your
minds will be at ease especially if
you’re a first-time breeder you never
know what to expect and you never know
if their behavior is normal or what
you’re seeing is normal so each week I’m
gonna pop back on here and I’m gonna put
up a new video that shows what that week
stages what symptoms she’s feeling motor
belly is looking like and yeah I will
keep you guys updated throughout her
pregnancy
so anyhow that completes part 1 of my
videos you got to see some tips on how
to be a good breeder and how to keep
your your girl happy and healthy during
the breeding process and I also got to
show you cookies first week of pregnancy
I’d like to continue on and make more
videos as she goes through the different
stages of her pregnancy I’ll get back on
here every week so that week by week you
can see how her stomach grows you can
kind of see what kind of symptoms that
she’s been having what changes there are
how she’s behaving so I would like to go
ahead and do that that way you can see
more information on week by week what to
expect her in your dog’s pregnancy and
when she gets closer to labor I’m gonna
post a video up that kind of explains
how I prepare for the labor and I’d also
like to do a video of her labor that way
you guys can see what to expect and how
to react well puppy well she’s having
her puppies and I will probably put
another video up of the puppies as they
grow and what you can expect as the
puppies are growing and developing so if
