Bringing Our Great Dane Puppy Home
We are talking quietly because our dog is sleeping, but describe the first week with Howard. Can you see the bags under these once non-baggy eyes? It’s happy madness. That’s what i would say. We’re going to get our dog! Technically it’s a puppy.
We’re going to get our puppy! When does it change from puppy to dog? One year? Yeah, I think one year or maybe two. All right, okay, we’re getting a puppy. He’s two months. Are you excited to meet Howie? I’m gonna call him Howard.
Do you think we’ll call him Howard or Howie? I’m going to be dignified and call him Howard first. And then i’ll probably resort to Howie. I think I want to get to know his personality, you know, and then i’ll decide if he’s a Howard or a Howie.
I think he’ll be both depending on his behavior. Yeah. Maybe when he’s in trouble… Howard. Howard. Don’t chew that, don’t chew that cable! We’re driving an hour to go pick up Howie. The next time you see us, we’ll have a puppy! So at first he was really calm and quiet and sleepy all the time.
And he had a huge belly. The first day. The first day. After that… all hell broke loose. He had a big old belly for reasons that maybe Bethany would like to share. Let’s just say he was a little backed up.
.. he was stressed out, um, so we had a lot of fun cleaning up poop all over our house. We learned that we were crate training him improperly. We were actually doing the exact opposite of what we needed to be doing and, that was what was driving us insane, turns out.
So once we did properly implement the crate training everything started going great. We had to let him whine it out and cry which, before we weren’t doing. He sounds like a little demon from hell when he cries, but it doesn’t last that long and it’s really hard to ignore him but we have to after we changed his diet to white rice and chicken, his stomach is doing, has been doing a lot better and he’s been feeling.
.. he’s been running around. The only thing is the rice I made was sticky at first, and so he made a huge mess with it. Well, we fed Howie chicken and rice for the first time and he tore up his bowl because he loved it so much and then threw his food all over the floor.
What are you doing? There’s rice everywhere. There’s rice everywhere! He’s putting his feet in it! Why?! Oh my gosh. But i had to Google how to make it non-sticky. I’ve cleaned up more messes in the past week than I have in the past five years.
But I would say the past 24 hours we’ve been doing a lot better. He’s sleeping in his crate. He’s sleeping in his crate right now. We’re talking, he’s not whining. We’re basically the best tag team. He has FOMO though when he’s in the crate and we’re walking around.
I mean there is some pretty good stuff going on out here. How would you describe him? His personality. Loyal, scared, dopey, smart, Sit. Good boy. He’s getting used to the waters. He’s very cautious. He’s learning.
And he’s just very lovable and friendly. And cute. And clumsy. He’s getting used to his body. But we love him, right? Yeah. He’s the best friend.
