Dobermans are named after Karl Dobermann,
who created the breed around 1890 in Germany
Dobermans are a mix of many breeds, including:
the German pinscher, Rottweiller, greyhound,
Weimaraner, German shepherd, black and tan
Manchester terrier
During WWII, a Doberman named Kurt saved 250
U.S. Marines by alerting them to the enemy.
WWII made breeding difficult. Breeder Werner
Jung risked his life to smuggle dogs from
East Germany to West Germany � and saved
the Dobermans!
Some Dobermans have cropped ears and docked
tails to make them difficult to grip if attacked.
Both practices are illegal in most of Europe.
Dobermans are very trainable and are ranked
as the 5th smartest dog, according to The
Intelligence of Dogs.
Dobermans are sensitive to cold weather and
make better companions as indoor dogs.
