Dog Agility Training – Weave Pole Training – Professional Dog Training Tips

is happening tonight on the after-hours
agility we’re back after all the hour
we’re back in the agility Orion we’re
gonna be talking with some dog agility
training specifically we’re gonna be
talking about some weave pole training
now and oh there’s lots of people who
have joined us from like a Facebook link
I know there’s lots of shares that we’re
gonna do this we full training tonight
on Facebook if you’ve arrived here after
clicking on a Facebook link you’re gonna
want to get out of Facebook because you
won’t be able to enjoy the chat you
won’t be able to use some of the
features that we have over on our
YouTube channel so make sure you get out
of the Facebook link go right over to
YouTube search we can dogs and we’re
gonna do some pretty exciting stuff
won’t you just give us a quick overview
about the show tonight yeah so I wanted
to talk a little bit about we people
training it’s one of my favorite
obstacles to train and I wanted to cover
sort of a wide range of stuff because
I’m sure we have a wide range of viewers
watching we’re gonna start a little bit
on how we teach people’s here with our
own dogs and our students dogs and then
sort of what our ultimate goal is by the
end and that is to have you know really
independent reliable we pull so that
when our dogs are leaving we don’t have
to think about it we can just send them
know that they know their job inside
them backwards and that’s one less thing
that we have to worry about as a handler
on course and it’s really important that
we teach the dogs that we know weaving
is fun a lot of the games and stuff that
we play teach our dogs to be quite
obsessive with we poles which can be
both good and bad yeah and then most
importantly making sure that we’re
training a way that doesn’t have a
million repetitions because as many of
you may know out there that do agility
we poles can be pretty hard on a dog’s
body so in prep for that I actually
brought four different dogs tonight
because we don’t want to leave the same
dog yeah entire time you’re gonna see a
broad range of abilities which is
probably gonna be helpful for you guys
out there that are maybe maybe your dog
has a very specific problem with the
weave poles and at any point during the
night make sure you drop your question
or comment in the chat on youtube so
that we can see it and we’ll be able to
answer some of those if this is your
first time with us whether it’s a train
station or an after-hours agility what
will happen is we’ll do some teaching
then we’ll come back to the questions
we’ll be answering your questions so at
any point something springs to mind make
sure you drop it
in the chat but with no further ado I
want to welcome you guys to McCann dogs
this is our after-hours agility I’m Ken
steep I’m Cale McCann and welcome back
to the can dogs so one thing we always
like to do is go to the live camera with
our moderator dan the man the moderator
man just it makes things happen you’ll
see him in the chat over here on youtube
if you have questions and you know he
can answer them by linking out a video
he’s able to do that he just provides
tons of help so let’s go to our live
camera and this is really easy this week
because we can just span over there and
there is Dan the moderator man you’ll
see him in the chat he super super
helpful and tonight is no different now
the other thing and I really enjoy doing
is I love knowing where you’re watching
from I also like seeing these animations
that I create where are you watching
from let us know in the chat I am I
switched everything on the live stream
to 60 frames a second you as you know if
you’ve been on our live show to do the
weekly live shows if you’ve been here
before
I am trying to break it every single
week trying to change something make it
new now we’re moving it faster frame
rates so my animations still look great
just ignore them we look great oh yeah I
mean I mean I’ve looked better I
actually have to my hairs really whacked
tonight well I mean it’s about agility
don’t watch me watch the dogs you just
finished a seminar this weekend I know
you did quite a bit of weevil training
in one of your days you talk about that
it’s an overview yeah you’re doing we
had a wicked weaves workshop pretty good
name eh yeah it was wicked wicked in the
best way not wicked in the worst way
yeah we did a wicked weaves workshop
that’s actually to say very quickly and
the idea behind it now all the dogs that
attended the weaves all weave workshop
all knew how to weaves but there is some
type of problem area whether it was the
entrance whether it was speed and
motivation through the poles whether it
was staying in the poles and not popping
out early so we did a whole bunch of
drills and exercises to strengthen
some of those areas so some of those
things will come up tonight in our large
stream as well yeah for sure I want to
see where you guys are watching I mean
this is really exciting for me I like
seeing people from all over the world
now are usually have a pretty big huge
UK contingent on our train stations that
happen at 7:30 at night but these after
hours agility I think it’s a little late
for those guys but I do see people here
from I see Lilia from Atlanta Georgia
welcome back Lilia Olivia from SoCal can
I kanae from Quebec City Canada Cindy
from South Carolina Melinda from Durham
North Carolina Alejandra from
Connecticut see Ellis good to see you
again from California I think it said I
just lost it to California yeah Pete
from Cape May New Jersey I saw I read
one I mean Michigan yeah Santa Cruz
California Wisconsin it goes out with
what else Connecticut Ohio Bedford math
Maryland yeah and I’m excited to see you
guys here so let’s not waste any time
let’s start where are we jumping off
from with the weave poles we’re gonna
talk a little bit about the we pull
methods that that we use when we’re
training our dogs to weave and I’m gonna
just show you a little bit of stuff with
one of the dogs that we have here now
when we teach our dogs to weave we use
two different methods and we use them a
little bit of both the method that we
mostly use is using channel leaves and
that’s those of you don’t know when you
have weave poles that are separated so
that there’s a channel that the dog can
run through so they have poles on either
side and then as they get more
comfortable that we’ve start to get
closer and closer together until the
dogs in fact weaving in and out of them
what we make sure that we do though
right in the beginning is train our dogs
with guide wires on either side and this
is method has been around for like eons
and eons and yearns forever but it
hasn’t been as popular in the last
little while which is really unfortunate
because it is one of the easiest ways to
train a dog to do the weaves and can
allow you to get less reps in with more
successful training sessions so we are
huge advocates of guy wires and I’m also
going to talk a little
later about Halloween off of the guide
wires does I think that is sometimes
people have a bit of apprehension to use
them because they are worried that the
dog is gonna be dependent on them the
other thing I think it’s important to
remember sorry to interrupt but it’s
okay to touch up some of your skills to
work on in a tree maybe it’s a
challenging entry it’s so nice to be
able to you know put your weave guides
back on you need them yeah and this came
up on the weekend because there are some
things that we tried to do on the
weekend that were beyond some of the
dogs skill level and some of the dogs
there didn’t know what guide wires were
and so it was very hard to work through
those difficult exercises without doing
a bunch of repetitions and breaking it
down into smaller increments if I could
have just popped a guide wire on where
the dog was popping out and had the
person work through it I could have
fixed it a lot faster so the guide wires
are really important we’re going to talk
about about them tonight the other
method that we use is two by twos I will
use this when I’m working a little entry
work but I don’t teach my dog – we
purely with two by twos I have found
with the hundreds and hundreds and
hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of
dogs that train here that the weep holes
aren’t as fast the channels really teach
really good footwork and drive for most
every dog so we try not to use too many
two by twos also there’s sort of
specific ways you need to train the two
by twos and if the person doesn’t know
how to navigate through those steps I
see a lot of wee problems develop if the
training isn’t done correctly so the
channel is a bit more idiot-proof
if you will but most importantly it’s
about not screwing up the dog and trying
to keep things as simple as you can so
that they can build confidence and speed
enjoy because the weave force can be
stressful you know if you have for
sometimes they can be yeah because
they’re it’s a complicated exercise it
teaches you know it’s it’s hard for them
to do I did see a question before about
what age to start rear pull training yep
we will start our channel work with our
dogs when they’re like I don’t know
eight or nine months old maybe what the
channel is
wider than the dog’s body so there’s
absolutely no spine movement on the dogs
part and it’s just basically to play
games teaching them to run through the
channel teach them to go find it
they’ll drive to a toy those types of
things and there’s no impact on the
dog’s body that’s extremely important
because the dogs are still growing and
that’s you know it’s very difficult on
their bodies I probably don’t get into
the Nitty Gritty until they’re about you
know over a year old before I start you
know having the weave channel start to
close in and buy clothes in I mean like
maybe a little bit wider than their body
so that they can feel it brush on their
side and there might be like a tiny
little bit of a wiggle but that’s about
it and then once you’re sort of ready to
progress in the dogs of age the steps do
not take very long at all so we’re not
in a big rush when it comes to repo
training so yeah you can take your time
with it I see a couple people that I
missed and I know Bonnie Bartlett and
Mary Williams are both here good to see
you guys welcome back to the train
station but I also wanted to mention
that too busy Black has been at a couple
of train stations and maybe it’s the
last after our agility but says hi from
the United Arab Emirates and I wanted to
show us because I really like too busy
blacks thumbnail it looks like a black
lab it’s hurt itself very cute okay
let’s get down to business
yeah let’s start start some of the
training okay I have to go get your dog
okay
I noticed that on my stream might be
throttling a little bit just a little
bit let me know if does it okay all
right I just wanted to make sure things
were working okay for you guys want to
say hello to Josh Rutland just checking
in from hot in humid South Georgia I saw
that I can a yeah nikka
said where can we buy guides that’s
something that we can ask okay where
would we where would someone buy weave
guides for their dog if they want to
follow along with my buddy a little plug
here because he doesn’t stop yeah our
guides hard at taking our guides are
from a company in Michigan called
clipping go yep and you can buy them
online you can I believe you
can buy them on clean run calm or
directly from clippin girl yeah my good
stuff okay we’re gonna head she we
talked with this last time I need to
have something because not saying let’s
head on over to the train station
you have to figure it out but let’s head
on over to camera two and maybe cuz I’m
a little bit of a who that dog is kale
and then we can introduce him let’s head
over let’s get to doing some training
[Music]
okay so this is ketchup
he is a border collie and I borrowed him
for the night for from my friend Rob
who’s one of our instructors here and he
has done you know so we pull training so
he is sort of past this this level but
I’m going to use them to show you how we
start to do our channel weeds now these
are our channel leaves it’s just a
little set of six poles and you’ll
notice those black guy wires on either
side that’s to guarantee that it helps
them to stay in the channel so when
we’re beginning we might start with some
restraint recalls we might start with
some status through so what I would do
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
to get the toy to try out a couple times
and then ask my dog’s repeating that
he’s doing a good job thank you
the next thing that I can do is start to
throw the toilet now one of the things
that is extremely important about weight
about people training is where you
reward your dog some people make the
error we pulls in the letting the dog
come and get food or toy from their
hands
it’s really important that the people
training your dog learns to focus
forward so you’ll notice that when I
send him through the guide walls or the
bleep holes with the guide on I’m going
to say yes and throw my reward in a way
that is ahead skis or work before you
train this your dog should have a city
or ice it weight and they should have a
retrieve with a toy or if they’re not
that toy motivated you could do this to
a manners minder or some type of treat
dispenser okay okay maybe maybe make a
big American alright so I can send them
through and then from there boy there’s
two things that I could do I could start
to work some popping sense or I could
start to move the wheeze in a little bit
closer now this dog is two years old so
he decorated higher closer I’m just
gonna move it a little bit more so you
can see how the dog starts to leave a
little bit I have no idea how loud I
should be speaking Ken so you’re gonna
just let me know if it’s not okay
thank you very much so I’m gonna put
them a little bit off
here I’m gonna release out and when she
goes through the polls I’m going to say
yes and reward up I’m going to do my
shoelace out first though so that you
don’t see me fall on my butt on camera
ketchup come here that’s a good boy
wait now this is very pushy he wants him
to weep so badly at film he loves this
so I want to keep working a little bit
on just the mental control here I don’t
want him going and doing wheeze on his
own he needs to wait for my provision
which is why I’m just going to stand
here okay so basically what you would do
is imagine to be polls in the middle of
a clock and you would send your dog from
each of the numbers around so I sorta
did like I don’t know one o’clock or 2
o’clock over there so I’m gonna kind of
go towards the bottom to imagine where
you are is 12 far ended six I’m going to
just move
[Applause]
my toes and my yes yes my good boy
so I’m gonna try and make it a lid
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Applause]
no matter what should always work both
songs so I was working off my left
somewhere else I need to make sure it
working out my right side up so you do
one more in the other direction out
kitchen
mr. ah also for finish that way to train
him to drop the toy a little bit better
Ready Set now notice that pointing this
way I can see him crossing across me
here so if you might get this wrong with
senior you said okay for you
you know because he’s actually dropping
the joy much better yeah oh you’re gonna
do a couple of different things with him
here because he’s so excited to go
I just wanted to reward him there
because he was being very patient he was
listening so well I need to reward him
for that coat oh yes you are good are
you ready okay
yes going for you okay so now is the
chance to have visited your first live
stream with us we’ll do some training
we’ll work on some stuff and then we’ll
come over and we’ll answer your
questions will also talk maybe a little
bit about the nuts and bolts that the
why behind some of what we’re working on
so I would love to know if you guys have
worked with a set of channel weeks
before like if you’ve introduced your
dog using the channel
the benefits that you’ve seen for me it
was a bit of a game changer I struggled
a little bit with my black lab when I
first started training her and agility
there were some things that I wasn’t
doing right as a new dog trainer and a
new agility handler I struggle a little
bit but when we switched over to using
the channels it was so I was so much
more successful because I worked on
things with kale like that around the
clock like building drive and rewarding
her at the end but the dogs Compson a
benefit of the channels versus the 2×2
um the benefit of the channel versus the
2×2 is that you can really work a lot on
footwork with the channel left slightly
open for an extended period of time you
can teach the dogs to really stretch and
develop a nice comfortable footwork you
could work a channel in six you can work
a channel in twelve I don’t know I just
really prefer it I find that there’s
less mistakes made because you’re not
shaping the exercise but I don’t want to
say that I don’t like Chad
two-by-twos I quite like them I just
like them as a nice compliment to the
channel I think two-by-twos is a great
way to work on entries to get the dogs
to problem-solve I think they’re
wonderful I just don’t like to solely
use one method over the other I like to
do a blend of two because they but I
think they both bring something great to
the table yeah Lauren Neville’s got a
couple of great questions here I really
think we should talk about Laura says I
was throw food on the ground in front of
my dog at the end of the weeds but she
still has low drive toward the end if
I’m not ahead of her is there any other
way to build Drive you can she
Suter toy food well it depends on the
dog it’s hard to answer that question
without knowing the dog because there’s
lots of lots of reasons why a dog would
not not be drive-e it could be that the
dog stressed it could be that the dog is
overweight it could be that they’re not
that interested in the food that you’re
using there’s all kinds of things so
make sure you’re using a high-value
reward also – you could use something
like a treat ball or a manners minder so
that it’s not just directly food on the
ground that way you can what I like
about the manners minder is that it
takes the guessing out of the dog so if
the dog does something incorrect if you
don’t know what a manners minder it is
it’s a remote treat dispenser I probably
actually could use one with the beef
yeah when I when I am you serve as an
example dog she loves to work for treats
but it allows you to the dog not to get
rewarded if the dog happens to make a
mistake which is really helpful for them
to understand what’s right what’s wrong
um the other thing you can use if you
use some type of food that can be in
motion so if it’s inside a ball or
something that you can throw that can
ignite some dogs prey drive and can make
things a little bit more exciting in
making sure that you’re adding good
motion as well just throwing a treat for
some dogs isn’t exactly enough right you
want to add motion and play and all
kinds of things that make the food even
more exciting than just an old treat on
the – yeah and just my dog trainer brain
thinking here if you’re throwing your
dog when they hit the end of those
weaves you may be rewarding them for
slowing down and stopping at the end of
the weeds not only especially if you
have a food motivate done only now are
they looking for that reward on the
ground but they’re being reinforced are
rewarded for hitting the brakes and
finding that treat and I must say that
before I do my recall training like that
dogs obviously that I use is very dry
view for the toy but that don’t not your
dog yeah but that dogs have been trained
to you know run out for the toy and play
for the toy and sit and be released to
the toy we do the exact same exercises
running to a food bowl or running to
treat so before my dog has been
practicing her weaves she would already
have been trained to drive fast to a
reward on the floor so those are some of
the foundation exercises that we would
train our dogs to do before introducing
any type of
obstacle and the same thing goes for
contacts or jumping or tunnels or
whatever it might be you want to teach
them about those games in the process of
learning so that when you add the
obstacle it’s just you know running
through poles it’s not really any
different than just running to get their
treats on the ground like you do you
know in the backyard or in the kitchen
when you’re just messing on Melinda
Miller asked to have weaves in my
backyard in a practice most days of the
week four maybe five reps a day is this
better on my dog’s body than during long
sessions or should I still be giving
rest stays in between I always still be
giving rest days in between it’s like
keeping it short and sweet is certainly
wonderful the only time I would train at
the rate you’re doing and I would have
probably do it every other day guy I
wouldn’t do it every day would be if I
was teaching the weaves in the very
beginning process but if I was
practicing the weaves and I was working
through issues things like that I
wouldn’t be training every day on the
weave so it’s very very difficult on
their body even if it’s just for a short
time so I would give your dog a few rest
days if you can yeah Laura Neville again
also is it good to use a word like ready
to let them know that they’re going to
go soon yeah you may have heard me say
that when I was practicing with the dog
if you have some prompt words that you
use to get them excited I often say
ready set go or you know people can say
all kinds of things but I train that
initially with my dogs before I play
with them or release them to a toy or
put the food down so that they start to
get excited when they hear that phrase
and then I will say that before I send
them into yeah Maureen Mello or do you
use the two by two for mainly entry
practice first and then use the channel
I usually don’t do to play twos until
after my dogs done channels for a bit
and again it doesn’t matter you don’t
need to do it in this order this is just
what I do my dog sees the channel first
and then you know a few months in into
it I might play around for a little bit
of two bites use if you wanted a
percentage I would say I train 90 85 to
90 percent Channel and 10 to 15% to buy
to the channels just works so easily for
my dogs that I just do a little bit of
two by twos they learn tons about
entrance entrances based on the
exercises that I’m doing
on the channels but yeah you don’t have
to do the two by twos first you can do
them anytime along the way in fact when
I get students into have we pull issues
and I think they’re doing shaping on two
pages but help them and they’ve already
trained weaves then I’ll have them do
that do it at that point as well so the
time frame isn’t as important yeah
there’s lots of great questions come on
so if you have a question about your
weave pole training make sure you drop
it in the chat if you’ve clicked a link
you know like a Facebook I know there’s
lots of shares in Facebook for this
livestream so if you click link and
Facebook make sure you come out and head
over to YouTube so you can join in on
the chat
Hannah asks is it worth going back to
channel if you’ve already truly trained
weaves through 2×2 is in order to
increase speed hi Cal oh it’s Hannah
Hannah Hannah is one of my weekly
students is absolutely definitely you
can go back for sure in fact when I was
trying to work on so one of the dogs
that we used to have his name was rad
and he was male border collie big and
not super coordinated when he was first
starting and he his footwork and speed
actually wasn’t very good when he first
started he’s just very awkward and
uncomfortable so for a really really
long time I had him on the channel with
it just ever so slightly open just to
give him an opportunity to move a little
bit more freely and to figure out his
footwork and that alt was also to
increase his speed so that he started to
feel a bit more comfortable reaching he
could really go fast I probably kept him
on an open slightly and I’m talking like
a few inches slightly open channel for I
don’t know two or three months I would
say yeah and it massively improved his
footwork in his speed in the polls it
really really helped build his
understanding to drive through without
you know stepping over or doing to step
one step two step one step footwork is
is really important you should really
think about what they’re comfortable
style is some dogs like to hit with one
foot on either side some dogs like to do
two feet two feet two feet my little
poodle that I’m gonna bring out later I
think she does four feet she literally
jumps from side to side so cute but yeah
so you can absolutely can go back and
work through that I think it’s a
fabulous idea
Deb Hennessy makes a good point I have a
small populace I used the channel to
train weeds mm-hmm yes the basis can be
really challenging it’s a good idea to
expose your dog to lots of different
bases so that they get used to it I
actually recently had a problem with my
own dog b-line who has spectacular we
poles she can do pretty miraculous
things and I went to a competition she’s
very young so she hasn’t been very many
competitions and she only had to do
six-week polls and it was in a straight
line couldn’t have been easier she had
no idea what to do she even knows
targeted the polls like she was
completely clueless and I could not
figure out what on earth was bothering
her so much so that if I went home and I
trained leaves here between the trial
because I thought oh my gosh I have to
fix them she could weave perfectly in
here and then suddenly it dawned on me
that she was understanding to weave pole
weave poles that were on a white base
with like green grass or whatever
interest I happen to be did I tell you
this know what yeah we didn’t we talked
about that behavior oh yeah it was a
realization so the weave base was green
or black and it was in grass and she
couldn’t see it and it like blew our
minds
then I took a black base that we have
and I put them outside here where she’s
also trained she also couldn’t leave so
she had learned to only look for the
bases and not for the poles so net once
I understood that I’ve got a black base
put it on dark floor put the guy wires
back on and we’re good to go now but
it’s just it’s so interesting so you
kind of have to let the dog tell you
stuff sometimes because you know I
wasn’t she wasn’t being a bad dog she
was literally she was confused she
didn’t know what to do I definitely
wanted what’s that what’s the same brain
sucker a dog training information sucker
and it’s getting full because we are
dropping some serious knowledge here on
the after-hours agility I’ve got a
question from a lady up with this always
a long time train station viewer and she
says when the dog is heading to the
weaves at top speed
do you work on collection my dog
sometimes misses his first try it weeds
because of this is it purely a handling
issue I wonder if this is best if we
push this – are you going to talk with
that a little bit I am let’s maybe we
should just Lili hold that question hold
it now because the dog I was gonna bring
you we’re gonna show you guys some like
pretty awesome we stuff
well ketchup is no longer in the
building so the next dog that I have it
doesn’t have this issue but the guide
wires really helps with this it’s not
necessarily a handling issue it could be
that the dog doesn’t understand to
collect and get the poles the guides is
a great way to teach the dog to sit back
there’s also a way that you can reward
your dog a bit differently there helps
them collect which I will show you based
on the placement of the reward there’s
certainly things you can do handling
wise that can help your dog like
decelerate earlier like do a weed grab
which is a handling maneuver that you
can do to help them out make sure that I
will show that but with the dogs that
I’ve had with those issues I will use
the guides and then I will work on
slowly increasing the speed until the
dog understands to get the injuries um
you want to jump out to grab one of
those dogs I know we have a few more
dogs that we’re going to be working like
okay this is gonna be the most adorable
section of the of the show as you’re
watching our toy poodle who doesn’t
isn’t really she definitely does agility
and she’ll happily work but we don’t
compete with her and agility but it’s a
lot of fun it’s also a great opportunity
for kill a night to learn a lot about
like the toy breeds and the tiny dogs
working through some of these exercises
so there are so many good questions
coming in to the chat that I see I
appreciate all of that are coming in I’m
gonna do my best to try to get to as
many as I can but if you do have a
question and you’re watching the stream
make sure you drop it in the chat
I know Kayla’s gonna bring over a hippie
I don’t even really know to be honest
what the what we’re going to be working
on here Kelly what are you working on
she’s just out of earshot Kel
while she’s heading over here now a CP
shake so hippie shake is CP shake is
pretty motivated when you get her going
I couldn’t find a toy um look at her go
she’s so fast it she doesn’t necessarily
love to do agility so this is something
that kills worked on to like really
build her drive it’s been really fun to
watch the transformation of hippy and
kale working where there’s a lot of it
has been really interesting for me you
know as an observer are you ready to go
I can hear I think maybe before I can
wean off of one of them and see if I can
hope for discipline taking the easier of
the two
you are Center Pole to rather than it’s
a proper entrance so I’m going to leave
this here and see if she can make it the
turn independently but this is going to
[Applause]
[Music]
hold until she yeah you can still just
so looks like we’re getting out okay
string right now look at the entries his
dogs getting
[Music]
[Applause]
you could they make spring poodles
miraculous wheat balls give any idea
what they saw okay
[Music]
it says brother stop streaming is it
going hey Joe
can you guys hear me okay
[Music]
hey we might be back play yeah could be
this isn’t bad I think I think we’re
gonna be good here in a second we just
reset the screen you’ll see it looks
good on what’s good on the so I think
your live jell-o
you guys just tell me what you want me
to do yeah dancing doesn’t it says it’s
working so I think we’re back
are we back you guys are amazing
what’s going on
amazingly hippy shake you guys need to
see this adorable little face because we
didn’t realize look at that cute little
dog we didn’t realize that the stream
had gone down until Dan let us know and
we were on a 30-second delay so we could
go back to maybe where were you well you
were down I continued training and my
dog did some relief from the miraculous
things that I didn’t know she could do
so what I’m gonna do is I’m going to
show you how come we’re gonna have how
the week guys can really assist your dog
and doing some really challenging weave
pull entrances now what I guess I should
go back to what I showed you is
initially when I started Turkey
microcurrent yeah I need to do what I
started I had two V’s on does it make a
sure she was doing this successfully and
then I progressed to showing how to take
the guide off and I don’t know if you
saw that it was probably all can’t get
done I should probably show you this
together
method is a channel using you to work a
little bit of around the clock stop with
the toy toy so that she’s going straight
everyone are you ready
so God okay okay one other side
so it’s not just about doing that we use
and throwing the toy
[Applause]
[Applause]
because I see you’re starting to slow
down because I did like 10 while we were
off Street so what are you do don’t you
remove one of these guys to make it a
little bit more challenging and I’m
going to see if she can still be
successful do you have one more in you
my lady
[Music]
[Applause]
totally successful because I know my
dog’s limits and what she just did there
is actually much harder than what I
normally practice with her so I don’t
want to take the guys out but what I
would do is continue training at this
step a little bit more and then start to
take the guide off but my sort of rule
of thumb I think I may have said this
earlier is you know two mistakes and
then I’m gonna change something to help
my dog be successful but I don’t want to
do it tell her she’s wrong and have to
start again tell her she’s wrong and
have to start again tell her she’s wrong
and how to start again depending on the
dog their dog your dog could either
start to stress high or stress low the
last cog that I used I’m a working at
the beginning of the livestream he would
stress high he would get more frantic
and less thoughtful we’re hippie shake
she would stressful oh she would get a
bit more worried she would start to slow
down I wouldn’t have the same driving
excitement so it’s very important of
training the way that I’m building my
dog’s attitude and drive so that she’s
enjoying herself and learning to do
things quickly the entire time hey Cara
maybe
good pastry go to some questions
yeah good a couple questions before we
switch oh okay I want to say welcome
back to everybody that hung in and I
know that we saw some people coming back
on we ran into a bit of a blip in our
internet we’re in the middle of the
country like rural area so we do
sometimes when we’re doing the the on
location stuff in the agility room and
we get a bit of a hiccup but make sure
you drop your questions in the chat I
know there was some some really good
stuff there before I might have to go
back a little bit to find some of those
questions but if you have any questions
about weaning off the guides or if
you’re looking to build motivation and
drive that something that Cale spent a
lot of time on with hippy shake and it
was it I mean you see you see what
you’ve got now she is really motivated
and I love when kale talked about seeing
when she started to see hippy plateau a
little bit she wasn’t going much faster
she was really running she switched up
her toy and I mean something as simple
as that can change the picture for your
dog and increase that motivation the
other thing that’s really important is
when kale recognized that she was
starting to get a little bit less
enthusiasm or when hippy shakes started
get a little tired because we were doing
a bunch of weave drills while you guys
work while you guys couldn’t see us but
um
kale just cut it that was it you know
she wanted to end on a really high note
because hippy shake is a dog that were
you know trying to really elevate her
performance and make her faster yeah I
see a few questions about B I can see
you guys watch a lot that you know her
name which is really cool hey I didn’t
want to use B line tonight because I
didn’t want to show you with the dog
that knew how to do all of the exercises
really well I was hoping that there
would be an opportunity to show you you
know how we would work through problems
the last demo dog that I’ll use before
we’re done for the night is my mom’s dog
purple and she does have quite good
agility agility scales and Jodl but we
pull skills and I’m gonna try some
really hard stuff with her and see if I
can push the limits in Tennessee where
my holes are and
and I’ll show you how to work here those
mm-hmm may be from earlier marine mellow
or mellow says do you ever double up
double up in the wire so the dog won’t
jump over or go under them the only time
I’ve had to do that if as I’m if I’m
working with the dog that truly doesn’t
understand the guides I may do that if I
was you know working with the dog for
the first time and I wasn’t involved in
its foundation training any of my own
dogs or any of my students dogs have not
had that issue because they learned with
the guides right from the beginning and
they understand what they’re supposed to
do with them so you certainly could use
it as a proofing exercise but I think if
you went back and just did some of the
foundation training with a channel or
even she was shaping and luring you know
in and around the guys just to show the
dog what to do you probably won’t have
to do that so Maureen also asked what to
do when the dog slows down like
anticipating what to do next
next my dog scopes afield and looks for
the next object that’s a little bit more
complicated of a question because it
depends and it sort of if the dog
slowing down but then they’re looking
for the next obstacle sort of it doesn’t
really those two things don’t really go
hand-in-hand very well or maybe I’m just
misunderstanding the question yeah she
said the dog slowing down and that like
like it’s like he or she’s confused and
then scoping for the next obstacle look
um I got it’s hard to answer because you
I don’t know why is the dog distracted
and just not working for you is the dog
disinterested lacking motivation
stressed not confident confused you sort
of need to determine the reason before
you can give the answer yeah if this is
happening in certain environments like
trialing or competition you may consider
not trying or competing for a little bit
so you can note the dogs confidence by
going to some different locations to
practice I know I do that a lot with my
younger dogs I try to get out to some
different places and practice so that
they you know get some more experience
share some of those things I like this
question from penguin lol is bad leave
my weave in leaves and jumps in the
yards when my dogs are just playing and
hanging out
the yard like this desensitize or
encourage them to think it’s okay to
roam when the obstacles are out I
wouldn’t do that with my own dogs I
don’t want my dogs a with my own dogs
issue my dogs are very driving so I
wouldn’t want them going in
self-rewarding on equipment because I
don’t want them taking equipment unless
I’ve given them a command to because
there’s lots of times where you know if
obsessed with the weep holes or tunnels
or whatever it might be because they
just get to play on them all the time
maybe that would be more challenging for
me to work handling around those
obstacles on the course if I was to have
the opposite problem with the dog that
was lacking motivation you know if I’m
you know there’s such thing as
practicing too much and you know taking
that drive in the enjoyment out of it
because it’s just something that’s you
know over and over and over again so I I
would discourage it if there was you and
you know have a time or you go out and
play with each of the equipment together
and then you know have the ability to
tell the dog to stay off the equipment
as well so in this maybe something we
talked about Melinda Miller says would
you use guides to prevent popping out at
the end working on my dog finishing the
poles if I start moving away from her
absolutely I would use them in any
location in the poles where the dog was
having problems again just to reiterate
I start with all of the guides on from
start to finish and then I slowly wean
off of them
typically I’ll start in the middle to
eat off of them because that’s the
easiest place at the poles and then I
would get to the point where just the
entrance guides and the exit guides are
on and that would sort of be the the
case for you know a few months depending
on how many training sessions I’m I’m
doing with the dog and then eventually I
would wean off of all of them and then I
would put them back on here and there
and everywhere if the dog needed them as
I start to advance my training so to
give you an example my dog beeline is
three years old and she does very good
repos but if she’s struggling to get
something he just grabbed a weave we’ve
got and put it right on right away even
though she’s pretty good at them just
cuz I just want to help her out and I
don’t want her to do a bunch of
repetition so you can always put them on
later okay let’s jump back in with a
training keeper okay I think who are you
bringing out next okay purple
you guys did they did you guys may have
seen purple last week this isn’t kales
dog oh you definitely do the answering
some questions about this kale purple
his kales mums dog but kills been
training her more often in agility and
and it’s been having lots of fun with
her I know kales been working with her a
lot so purple is going to present a few
different challenges certainly then you
saw with hippy shake and I think it’ll
give you an even bigger picture maybe
more applicable for your dog are you
ready to go okay let’s head on over you
can see the camp I can see from the
camera pretty well but you can start
from anything really I guess I could
start over here so what I’m gonna do is
challenge your accents I’m gonna start
off by some nice straight exits but I’m
gonna do some different handling like
padding applying cross or some different
handling to make sure she can stay in
I’m gonna just start off with no glides
on because she is trained to do the
weaves and I’m just gonna see if I can
expose any holes and hopefully we find
one or two and I’ll show you how I work
how I will work through are you ready
thank God please
like distraction training so I’m
proofing things as well
all right gonna make it a lot harder on
her now thank you ready
that was so good my prefer B we please
whoops whoops so that was really hard
but I just did so I’m gonna make it a
little easier
take it easy go
[Applause]
change my motion offer be successful
good what else can we do to make it hard
hey Bella try some fading when she went
that way did you see that was good yep
notice the placement of my reward and
the timing of my reward I’m rewarding
her and drawing the reward forward to
reading for sir for not puffing oh you
want to try and click the toy or the
food in the location that assists your
dog you’re doing it correctly okay now
I’m gonna just do a bit of distraction
you’re being so good and I need to see
if she can stand the polls when I move
the opposite direction to where she’s
going so I’m just gonna use this jump
here you don’t you got to get it up just
gave her some speed and she stayed in
I’m actually I thought I was gonna get
her on that one I have to be harder
we
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
so how would you introduce something
like that like how would you start now
that was amazing so what I would do is I
would throw a couple guys on the end so
I was actually assuming she would pop
out there but that was
and it would also start out by pre
placing the toy so how can be successful
Thank You next so hopefully we do this
out wait my toy you would need it so we
started on this I didn’t really wait
wait so I’m just gonna sort of move past
the poles because the reward is there
and again you don’t have to you this way
in case food her attentions to the toy
she’s not going to be quite so worried
about what I’m doing I’m gonna do it
very carefully and calmly so that I’m
not going to be as big of a distraction
to her please we let’s I surprised
everybody think I’ve done I’m just gonna
actually send her through without making
your heart did you’re not known for the
guys I’m sure
you deserve a gold medal for your page
[Music]
I’m sorry I’m sorry girl ready okay so
much easier it’s so much easier when the
guides are job this is why it’s after
hours of Jovi it’s not like on duty
agility move across the end of the poles
as I’m getting ready to go down I’m not
moving very quickly
I was keeping very strong eye contact
with her as I was moving to help her as
well I was keeping my hands out to put a
bit of pressure on her and then I would
just build and slowly you don’t even
need to do this with a full set of 12
you could also just work instead of six
as well and then the last thing there’s
one to show you is something you can do
to report the entrances again and this
is if you’re doing a lot of practicing
because I’ve already done a lot of
repetitions with her and I don’t really
want to do it
or somebody earlier in the livestream
even asked about collection on the entry
having them slow down so the guys would
certainly help but the other thing you
could do is just forward your dog for
the entrance of purple knows that when
she enters and I say yes it means she’s
correct
she needs to continue weaving down the
poles but if I just throw the toy tell
her get it she’s allowed to stop weaving
and get her toy and this is how I could
reward some pretty challenging weave
entry so maybe I’ll go this way Hardy
[Applause]
so she’s just getting the entry reward
and she doesn’t have to leave all now
obviously I wouldn’t do this over and
over and over again because I might have
a dog that goes in a couple pulls and
then puffs out so now you’ll let her do
a full set and I’m gonna be done so
because she did lots of reps are you
ready go
I’m a big believer in talking to the dog
in the polls some people are worried if
I’m praising you’re saying yes but the
dogs completing because the dog might
pull out and i trade my dog so the
beginning to be comfortable with my
praise because i want the dog to go in
and go fast and it also allows me to
train my dog in a competition I’ve been
in World Championships you know with the
gold medal on the line and my dog funky
monkey hit an unbelievable leave entry
and I literally yes to cheered her like
I would I was like I was home here in
the arena training and on the video it
was so adorable to see because as soon
as I said yes good girl she actually
sped up the polls because she was like
okay mom’s happy with me I’m such a good
girl she had no idea she was at the
World Championship she could care less
she was just out playing on agility
having a good time so I think it’s
important to teach your dog to accept
your praise and motivation in the polls
teach them not to pull out they just
learned we’ve better and faster hey Ben
good you’re so good you so good they’re
bleeding okay so I see starting to be
better Elsa says good girl purple she
wants to please you so much she is so
good we just started working together a
little bit more like about a couple
weeks ago she’s my mom’s dog but I’m
gonna start doing some competitions with
her and I can already see because we’ve
been training more together that she’s
starting to get a little even more touch
to me which is really fun yeah for sure
so if you ever question about we’ve pole
training make sure you drop it in the
chat I see penguin ll you say weave as
purple was going to do did you introduce
that only after she learned 12 straight
my boy will pop by what if I say and if
I say something while he’s weaving and
this is a great proof dangerous yeah so
I typically don’t put the command to the
behavior until the behaviors like fairly
solidified so I didn’t say weave until
she was actually weaving when she was
learning but I do say other things I
might say go go go we’re okay
earlier when I was showing the weep
holes channel with ketchup I wasn’t
really saying we’ve I don’t think I
think I was just saying okay which is my
release command some people say break
but you just use lots of different words
when they’re when they’re weaving to
challenge them so that they’re
comfortable with no matter what what’s
difficult on them is if you’re silent
and then all of a sudden you start
talking so if you have you may have
noticed my cadence and how I say it is
we we we we’ve it’s sort of very
repetitive and it has a bit of a rhythm
to it which helps the dog get a rhythm
themselves in the polls – for sure
I I don’t know if there’s anything else
you want to add or if you had another
dog that you were going to work no okay
okay
talked out I’m a I love the fact that
you guys that hung around cuz we did
have a bit of a technical issue I want
to thank you for hanging with us I have
to thank Dan the man the moderator man
for keeping you guys in the know during
during the internet outage but we were
able to make it back and drop some dog
training knowledge I hope you enjoyed
this stream now let us know in the chat
let’s know in the comments if you’re
watching this on the replay if you’re
enjoying our After Hours agility it’s
something that we like to do it’s it
this is you know this is youtube because
you know you want to share what you are
doing and this is a great opportunity
for us to really enjoy you know some
time with you talking about dog agility
most of our channels about double
obedience but this is something we
enjoyed doing it’s something we’re gonna
be doing anyway you’re it’s like you
guys are hanging out with us after we
work I teach obedience tonight like on
Tuesday nights and and Kail teaches
agility and after I just come out and we
have some dogs have been in their crates
all night well we’ve been teaching and
they get to come out and play for sure
some exercise and then we all go home
and conk out
yes yeah exactly but if this is your
first time on the channel make sure you
hit that subscribe button when we
publish new videos every single week
tough you don’t have a well-behaved
four-legged family member I want to
answer a couple questions before we are
at least one from Kaitlyn spent a great
question how how early do you typically
introduce puppies to the weave poles not
until they are it oh it depends on the
method but if you’re just you know doing
general we pose that we wait til the
dogs at least a year old okay love
seeing all this support for the agility
stuff by penguin
great tips sandy says thanks so much for
a great demo maria miller says love it
melinda miller says thanks this woman
was really helpful well thank you guys
for watching you know we do these live
streams for you and we enjoy the
opportunity to hang out catch up and
talk about dog training so with no
further ado i’m gonna wish you guys a
happy training i’m ken i’m capped bye
for now guys
