okay so right now we are let’s see we’re
about I don’t know Oh
two minutes and so if you’re seeing this
now please just are you if you’re seeing
this later
skip to three minutes and I’ll put this
in the post but three minutes you can
hear sound it happened to me last time
rookie mistake alright let’s get to it
this is doc via the Q&A episode of 114
my name is jeremy majors for the first
time I’m a dog trainer how the Green Bay
was starts it and we do these QA because
[Music]
the world actually it’s pretty cool so
you guys just ask questions and I’ll do
the best I can to answer them and ask as
many questions as you want don’t be shy
alright let’s get started
okay first question is from Elizabeth
how do you correct an extremely yard
aggressive dog so she has a yard
aggressive dogs so when they talk when
people talk about a yard aggressive dog
they talk about a dog’s up and down the
dog well the way that we would we would
address aggression in the house is
the relationship between the dog and the
person is not one of which the dog
actually listens to their word and so
that’s where the training comes in the
training is there to convince dogs that
they have to listen to when you say no
because you’re teaching this dog how to
behave how to properly behave and so
it’s up to you to spend time with them
in that environment that it’s not
necessary
okay what do you do when your dogs start
fighting well for one
they should stop fighting but you got to
start thinking about why they fight from
why they are fighting so that you can
get control of them so first of all my
philosophy with fighting dogs is dogs
shouldn’t be fighting and you should be
able to stop their fighting with your
leadership you should actually get them
to think twice about fighting beforehand
but identify the problem most dogs that
live together and have gotten along
together at one point are fighting
because of jealousy issues or possession
of a resource or spatial the grumpy dog
gets grumpy or it’s through doors
through thresholds and so I think if
your question is how to stop them from
fighting know why they are fighting but
if you want to sort of stop fighting
like how to break up a fight I don’t
know if that’s your question on that but
I’ll just start with a breakup so a safe
way to get dog fighting is to break them
up but you have to make sure you do not
don’t do that grabs with the back legs
grab their tail but don’t grab anywhere
near their head
and then tried throw them in a separate
room or get them separated by a fence or
something like that but when you have
two dogs that are fighting you want to
identify who the aggressor is and the
aggressor would be the dog you think
started to fight and usually that dog
may be sort of the assertive one the one
who has to come in first the one who
wants your attention first not the
laid-back thumb
maybe the laid-back dog is just
defending himself from the aggressor and
so if you can identify the aggressor in
that situation then the other one may
just not you know even want to continue
you know don’t may just want to walk
away because it’s just defending itself
so identified the aggressor that would
be that would be good you have a much
better chance of stopping the fight if
you can actually get the aggressor away
all right we’ll leave it at that
thanks for your question VIN says when
it comes to train table dogs
is there a breed you recommend
it depends on what you want that’s sort
of a difficult question to answer it’s a
it depends on what kind of lifestyle you
live and what kind of temperament you
have because I find that all those
things if are aware of you can better
pick a dog that’s going to but as far as
training a dog say I’m training a dog to
be to do something to have a task like
you know hurting police dog work
detection work things of that nature
then you want to get a dog who has a
high pets high prey Drive high privat
dogs are the most trainable dogs because
they have such a drive to get what they
want and the more a dog gets the more a
dog wants to get what it wants you the
more you can show the dog how to get
what it wants okay so those breeds are
right off the top of my head
hounds Shepherds all sorts of Shepherds
obviously so it really depends on what
you want if you want to lay back down
and don’t get a prey driven dog if you
want a dog that can run the media that
can throw that can catch the frisbee
prey good prey Drive dogs are definitely
awesome for that that’s why Border
Collies excel at it and that’s why
Australian Shepherds excelled at it as
well they both are
I wouldn’t say hi whoa
borac Holly certainly have a hybrid
but uh but officer and shepherds they
all are genetically wired to control so
they make the best frisbee go alright
thanks for your question feel free to
ask enough okay next question
okay you’re welcome
how do you teach a dog to sit without
gently helping them to sit is that
correct
to do have read that you shouldn’t help
them to sit when you are teaching the
dog to sit you don’t have to help them
well you are helping them you have to
help to teach do you mean if you mean by
pushing them down with your hand I don’t
see anything wrong with it but the
easiest way to get dog to sit is to make
sure their head is that about this angle
but if you can your dog take your dog’s
head from here to here right right there
and you keep it there guaranteed the
dog’s butt will sit so that’s why you
see people lift up treats because they
do to get the head to do this and then
the butt is the ground
that’s not that’s a default behavior
that we’ve decided to name sit so the
dog all the dog’s head is got to do is
hit this angle and it will sit so but
that’s kind of what they call it
condition something condition do you
think a high prey Drive do you think
high prey Drive dogs who want something
they shouldn’t want are harder to Train
though do you think I pray draw drive
dogs who want something they shouldn’t
want are harder to train dog no I think
you should teach him to want something
they should want
but that if they want the key is they
just want something whether it’s you
know if it’s something they should or
shouldn’t get in the key is how bad do
they want what they want you know what I
mean
that’s trainability because that’s the
drive to get what they want some dogs
will sniff out for 10 miles just to get
what they want I mean some dogs will
work for an hour straight and intense
work to get what they want
so yeah the dog is intense that’s a good
example of the dog who is a very hyper
drive dog high prey Drive dogs also
could very well be bad with cars because
cars do what they run away and then the
high prey Drive dog wants to go and get
whatever is running or what seems like
it’s moving away from them
all right this question
okay my five-year-old Dane grabbed my 18
month old Dane five hours after by the
five hours after surgery by the neck
this happened outside eighteen-month-old
ended up needing sutures to get to her
here only
I have kept them separated since two
weeks five-year-old going for bed exam
if everything is good
how do I introduce again or should we
keep them separate for life no you
shouldn’t keep them separate for life
my theory is with dogs they get along
with each other they can co-exist they
may not really love each other but
they’re going to get along which means
no fighting okay because some dogs
aren’t just gonna bury just like you
know like each other some dogs are but
that again doesn’t mean that they’re
there they can’t be simple with each
other basic respect so you have to
really fight figure out why the dogs are
fighting that’s the most important thing
because then you can fix it okay and
again if it is jealousy then you want to
have the policy that you can only pet
one dog at a time and the other dog
should gladly walk away from that
situation you know what I mean so that
one dog at a time just be able to have
control of that when you walk into the
house and they both greet you that’s a
problem that’s something you want to fix
that’s something that you want to
address because that can cause that the
jealousy issue and and I would say if
your dogs are on the furniture that can
also cause some tension so once you take
control of both dogs that’s the most
important thing and they’ll start to
they could start to play all right so my
last wall my favorite I’ll just say my
favorite case they’ll talk about where
to 120 pound Rottweilers one was named
red
and the other one was named coach and
they were fighting brothers they were
probably between 3 and 5 but they were
fighting over jealous one had the
temperament one had a very high prey
Drive temperament and the other well I
think his name was coach yeah the coach
coach had a coach had a very high prey
Drive and she the owner actually
competed with this dog so good
competition dog but he got dog
aggressive and so what I taught her was
when you walk in the house you should
tell both of your dogs to go lay down on
their bed and and then you should wait
until they’re very calm before doing
anything else
and when I mean wait that means you know
that could take some time and so again
you have to sort of take control of
those uncontrollable high energy times
anytime that there’s high energy and
anytime that they are out of control you
got to be able to get them calm that’s
how you’re gonna have success when
getting them not to fight over jealous
over jealousy
all right and then it so I have a couple
of good videos on YouTube on how to
introduce dogs that are aggressive or
have been aggressive back to each other
it’s a step by step it’s about 40
minutes long both videos or at least 38
minutes long but I document my first
four sessions of me bringing in a dog
that is dog aggressive and I’ll provide
you in that video with what I would
recommend as far as tools to make sure
you have success but check out the
videos on YouTube and go to my playlist
it’s on the do-it-yourself playlist all
right
okay sound works okay
okay hey Jeremy over all the over all
the years you’ve been trading what is
your go-to training tool my go-to
training tool well I would say I don’t I
mean I don’t really have a tool that I
like I don’t I really concentrate on um
I really concentrate on helping people
keep tools as sort of a a side thing not
the main thing that anything it focused
on when people focus on tools too much
then dogs become aware of the tools and
only act good when the tools are on and
so I really want to address the issues
that are going to be better for the dog
long term in that short term so if
you’re you know if you run into people
who say you know the dog needs the
e-collar
as a first response to challenges that
you’re having then that person may just
be reliable too reliable on a tool tools
are just again there to help deal with
how to convince your dog to take your
word for it that’s what the tool is for
and that all tools should be temporary
because through your consistency with
through your consistency inhibition to
the tool they should be able to go away
one day so I will say though that I do
think every dog can benefit from being a
collar trained actually I would have to
say my favorite tool to use the training
dogs is the crate that’s my favorite
tool only because you can address a lot
of issues and be safe doing it you can
address resource aggression food
aggression
you can even address dog aggression
human aggression all in the crate if
used right oh and guess what I like to
use the retractable leash many of my
colleagues would say I’m an idiot for
that
but I love that retractable leash
because it can be used as a very good
training tool the problem is the
majority of people don’t know that
Alicia is a training tool that you
should in fact be able to walk your dog
without a leash one day if you use the
leash right the leash can go but it’s
gonna be used right because it is a
training tool it’s not just a a thing
that you use to keep your dog from
running from you all right what do you
do with a lazy dog that doesn’t want to
do the commands are learning them
doesn’t want toys or treats it’s a new
field well
I mean with newfies they’re obviously
gonna be more challenging because they
weigh so much you know but you can sort
of get the dog to move with you better
with a leash you know I mean use the
leash and get a prong collar if you have
to but I’ve definitely dealt with dogs
who are just the complete opposite of
that hyper drop we were talking about
earlier so use the leash it will help
you you know at least be able to move
the dog when you want the dog to be
moved
what’s up like that alright thanks for
your question feel free to ask another
one
my pyrenees would not sit with a tree
over her nose lol and to push her butt
down well then I would say that your
great pyrenees is it a high treat driven
dog our food driven dog any food driven
dog will do that though maybe I should
have specified but it’s not about you
know again it’s the when you touch it
teaching the dog to sit it’s the angle
it’s the angle of the head what’s the
head doing if the head is looking at
this way then the dog will sit you can
get it with a treat if the dog is Treat
motivated you probably won’t if it’s not
and then you you know do other things
all right those of you who just joined
in on YouTube
this is dog a dog behavior Q&A that we
do every Wednesday please feel free to
ask as many questions as you like and
this conversation started so I’ll go
ahead and tell you one of the things are
I would say the biggest challenge for
most dogs or let’s just say a common
problem amongst most dogs that I train
the large majority of them are
territorial and their aggression is
stemmed from being
step from territorial issues and so and
that’s probably the hardest one to get
over to you know it’s probably the
hardest hunt for some dogs to get over
certainly it it speaks to your need to
gain control of your dog
it speaks to trying to the importance of
trying to or having that certain level
of dialogue with your dog I think the I
think every dog should have the ability
to come when called under big time
distractions and if you don’t have that
then you should work on it because
someone that was close to me had a dog
they were walking they their dog saw an
aggressive dog in the yard and the lease
came out of the out of the person’s hand
and the dog wearing up to the the dog in
the yard and the dog in the yard grabbed
grabbed the other dog by the neck and
start shaking so they had to go to the
hospital this than the other it was not
a good situation but what if your dog
could have listened to you in that
situation what if your dog would have
actually actually came when you said
come you know that that would have
possibly saved the dog from
from suffering from that damage can I
bring that up because again I think that
that is probably one of the most
important things to teach your dog under
major destructions you can keep your dog
from getting attacked and that takes
some work and I don’t know that that’s a
hard level to reach for most people with
their companion dog but it is necessary
but it all starts with learning how to
walk loose leash because that is opening
up that dialogue that we were talking
about
how do you correct and extremely oh okay
all right so again that’s probably the
most common problem of people call me
with this territorial aggression but if
you have a human aversive dog a dog that
doesn’t like humans it’s it’s not safe
to assume that the dog has been bitten
I’m being beaten there’s many people
that say oh may have been abused must
have been abused so afraid of men must
have been abused and lunches that people
on walks and I’m here to tell you that
that’s not that that’s not the case
it’s not if there are dogs who have
never been abused that do all of the
same behaviors so we can’t say that the
dog has been abused us because it’s
afraid of men men present a little bit
bigger of a picture sometimes and that’s
what it is it’s what they see as sighs
not necessarily they’re persons at six
but their size besides manners to dogs
although you wouldn’t think about it and
you see some of these chihuahuas I’ve
gotten a lot of enquiries about
chihuahuas lazy and boy small dogs take
a lot more time to Train than big dogs
you’re dealing with much more of a steel
trap of a mind that you have to decode
and like you know try and get into the
small dogs are just so used to getting
what they want when you try and put any
sort of control on them they can’t
handle it
they’re very uh they’re very just you
know again if you have a dog if you
build the dog that is so used to getting
what it wants then it really is hard to
get through to them it’s really hard to
show them you know that just simple
things like regular obedience for small
dogs is very tough especially in my
experience teaching a little dog lay
down the way that I teach it I want them
to decide to go down on their own I
never forced them down I want them to
because again most dogs come to me no
one knowing what to do but they’ve just
got to be shown that they have to do it
each and every time you know I ask them
to and it’s only there to facilitate
trust the kind of trust you’ll need to
get past the major anxiety fearful or
aggression aggression behaviors so calm
yeah
that’s all I got let me make sure I got
all the questions though you guys have
any last questions that you want to pass
by me do so now because I’m all out of
questions this week I didn’t I didn’t
post in I apologize that we weren’t
having to pay Q&A today I got really
busy today and so I didn’t really get to
have time to post it I was going live
but we’ll be here next Wednesday
and we will you know try and let you
guys know we’re having it beforehand we
are having our pack walk for all you
dogs all you ask line of minds who are
watching please be out there Saturday
and let’s have a good walk I think it’s
supposed to be good weather and we’ll
know I hope so
I’m so sweet good weather
okay my dog got a couple of last-minute
questions
my dog growls walks by our house
how would you correct this she recently
broke her leash and went after a dog
when your dog is in the house and your
dog is growling add another dog in the
window or something
try and get the dog to go from the
window to a bed and tell the dog to lay
down tell the dog to go there okay
because you’re not only teaching their
dog just too well you know you’re not
just showing your dog that you get away
from the window so you can’t see you see
any dogs but you’re also showing and/or
teaching that the dog doesn’t have to
even growl I take and control the
situation because if we don’t taken
control of that situation then the dog
is going to okay especially any sort of
assertive dog so if your dog is growling
even though it needs your guidance
basically you got to get the dog to do
something and I would teach the dog to
go to your bed you don’t I’m saying when
you say go to your bed the dog should go
if your dog doesn’t then you have to add
a tool like a week
just start but that’s what I would do I
make her lay in her bed okay if you can
get her delayed her bed and she grows on
her bed then I would say let her grow or
you can just kind of verbally say quiet
or down that one would work best but if
she can lay down on her bed despite a
dog walking by then then the growling
wall will melt away because she’s
actually still choosing to listen to you
all right hope that makes it how to
correct food aggression well I think the
dog needs to learn what out means I
leave it I teach my dogs out out and you
can do and this goes for any sort of
resource aggression it’s just not food
aggression it’s just any sort of
resource that the dog wants dogs are
naturally we’ve got to kind of give them
a the benefit of the doubt that the dogs
probably naturally some dogs are going
to be food aggressive because you know
if they were wild then they would have
to eat and be grumpy with all the other
dogs in the pack so it’s a kind of an
instinctual thing then you have some
dogs are never like that some dogs are
totally fine with anything you know them
saying but but but okay so you’ve got
the resource whatever did let’s take
something that the dog doesn’t really
care about and start teaching the
outcome in on on that and once the dog
gets it with something it doesn’t care
about like a old toy or something the
dog really doesn’t care about and then
you go about it by throwing it on the
ground it could be a ball it could be a
toy something the dogs don’t care about
then the dog will go like this and
that’s your opportunity to see how so
here’s the resource the microphone
the resource you throw it down dog
immediately wants a sniff
the dog doesn’t even have to grab it to
teach the hell the dog just has to put
its nose on it then that’s what you say
now that’s when you teach the dog out
you don’t want to get the habit of
allowing the dog to eat in in the
beginning you know when I keep in the
habit of allowing the dog to eat or
actually grab the bone or something like
that before you tell the dog out let’s
go ahead and get the dogs intent let’s
address the dogs intent put something
down the dogs intent is to grab it and
then before it gets there out boom just
like that the dog lives attack then you
tell the dog to sit you know I’m saying
so demonstrate one once again so throw
it down dog goes like this boom here’s
in the nose ready now dog looks that you
sit sit and then you sit and then you
can take the bowl away but if your dog
doesn’t listen to that out then you may
need a I think that you collar is
probably the best tool for that you can
do a leash correction as well but the
e-collar again allows you to be a little
bit more safe and teach the dog as
gentle as possible thanks for your
question ask another ok serious is I was
wondering why Maisy responded to out
when that first started using it thank
you for that you’re welcome I hope
everything is well with you guys
all right what’s the best way to contact
you set up sessions call me and if I
don’t answer leave a message and I will
call you back when I have you know time
time is kind of
scared to these days with my little boy
but try and call me I I way prefer
calling over email text things like that
I’ve tried teaching out but never use
the ego would you recommend the e-collar
for out yes absolutely
though that that’s a that’s that’s a
really good opportunity to teach the dog
hell yeah but here’s the other deal when
it comes to out that our command is is a
can be a sign of how well the dog
respects your leadership if the dog does
not let go of the toy or what you want
when you’re playing toga
then the dog doesn’t think it has to but
the dumb so what you do is grab the
toy and you somehow stop it from moving
if you can get that toy to stop moving
when the dog is even thrashing its head
you don’t even have to stay out the dog
will let go with enough time some dogs
are going to test your patience some
dogs won’t but say you’re playing with a
toy or whatever maybe just hold it I
usually brace my arms up against my legs
I used to have to teach police dogs how
to let go and so I’m pretty practiced on
that but I usually brace my arms on my
legs and the dogs usually back out like
this
so you don’t have to wrestle it’ll you
don’t have to do any of that crap a
natural way to teach a dog how to let go
of what whatever it has in its mouth is
to well when you’re playing tug of war
its specific is to do what they call
dead prey which is gravity don’t don’t
let it move and watch the dog let go of
his mouth all right okay guys I think
that’s totally different thing I don’t
know check on YouTube oh crap
question on YouTube all right my dog is
really hyper and I’m having a baby how
can I calm down calm her down
she’s a bully not a year old um what you
have to make sure you’re doing is once
you have what you have to make sure
you’re doing is first of all first and
foremost give the dog some exercise if
it’s a one-year-old dog or a really
young dog we got to remember that we
have to give them what they need it
exercises what they need but that dog
needs so that’s the first step I think
there’s a lot of steps if you’re already
on my youtube just check out my videos
you need to teach the dog how to walk
correctly not just take the dog out for
a walk but actually teach the dog how to
walk correctly you need to teach the dog
to place command basically um teaching
the dog how to do something as opposed
to getting into trouble you can train
that dog
but all of those videos are on my
youtube channel and might do it yourself
play this so um check it out then you
have a chance alright but it’s going to
be the control that’s going to get your
dog to actually be open to our to
guarantee that your baby and your dog
get along okay so you got to get the dog
under control by doing certain things
that the dog has to do more so than what
the dog gets to do for free or whenever
it wants so yeah all right you guys
we’ll see you guys next week same time
same place
um and hopefully I’ll get my equipment
crap right and you guys me Henry right
from the get-go but I appreciate you
guys watch it we’ll see you next week
