Dog Breed: Boxer (12.6.2013)
indeed Thank You Lee and this is always
a segment I’m looking forward to on a
Wednesday morning getting to know our
canine friends a little bit better and
like you’ve said yes we are talking
about boxes this morning the very lively
boxes and we have Monique with us
she’s a boxer specialist judge she’s
just international and local
competitions is also a breeder does it
tell us a bit a bit but a bit more about
these fascinating dogs Monique thank you
so much for joining us and I think he’s
taken to me to your friends here this
morning okay this is Morgan he’s five
years old he’s a breed champion Wow and
he’s he’s my soul mate and this is
little DJ he’s eight weeks old he’s not
related to Morgan
yet I wanted to bring him to show the
difference in colors because boxers come
in two official colors which is brindle
which is this one here with the exact
stripes and then the phone which is what
Morgan is okay there is another color
white which is not officially recognized
but they do crop up in boxes never seen
a white boxer they’re exactly the same
as their colored counterparts but you
can’t breed with them we at the stage
are not allowed to show with them but
they make fantastic family companions
and they’re everything that their color
brothers and sisters are so let’s go
back in history a little bit’s the boxer
where does originated from exactly it
was originally developed in Germany okay
got a rather bloodthirsty background and
they were used as bull baiting and bear
baiting dog Wow
the original dogs that were used to
create the boxer yes they did a number
of crosses with various dogs until they
developed the boxer and that was in the
19th century you know as we moved into
the 20th century the breed was refined
and they started the stud book and
started registering them and they then
changed when they were no longer allowed
to do bear baiting bull baiting and that
sort of thing they were then used by
hunters they would go out with the
hunting dogs and when an animal was
cornered or caught the box would hold on
to the animal until the hunter got there
to dispatch the end
so they’ve got a very specific head
structure which they need to perform
that task so there’s very different
things about a boxer head than any other
normal breed for example they their bite
they are what we call under shot which
means their lower jaw goes further then
they top jaw and that just produces a
very strong bite Wow
they’ve got wrinkles on either side of
their nose which was which was also to
drain the blood from the animal they
were holding away from their eyes so as
I say blood thirsty yeah but no longer
Wow okay well what what a history now I
understand that there’s this one type of
boxer one type of boxer but different
styles okay so let’s talk about those
different styles which one is more
prevalent in South Africa it’s very
interesting in South Africa because in
actual fact in South Africa we actually
have a few styles which makes it
difficult for our judges and our sharing
two to judge our breeds because you’ve
got the German style which is a more
heavyset more sort of businesslike dog
you’ve got the American boxer who’s a
more elegant dog tends to be I have a
longer neck and they just seem to be
more could I say regal
and then you’ve got the UK look which is
sort of in between so in South Africa we
actually have all three styles
okay so prevalence in this country I
would say probably even between the
three styles but if you go to Europe
you’ll more than likely only see the
German style and in America there are
more prevalent that morgen itself he’s
very interesting because he actually has
both European and American blood in him
but he’s not your typical American look
he’s far more heavy than that so I would
say at a push he’s probably more your
European look thank you so much for
coming through I wish we had more time
to talk about these fantastic dogs but
we will put some more info on our web
