Dog Training & Bird Hunting Tip: Get Your Dog Ready for Hunting Season
you spent time preparing but is your dog
really ready for the hunting season I’m
Bev milk I’m with renegade retrievers
here to share with you my experience in
dog training and some tips that might
help it’s important to introduce your
dog to so many things they’ll see in the
field so be sure to familiarize them
with riding in a boat swimming through
decoys during a retrieve good girl
prepare them to deal with diversions
like that bird that falls nearby in a
middle of a retrieve and be sure they’re
familiar with sounds like a duck call or
gunfire here here sit sit I’m preparing
Phoebe for her first hunting season and
we have a boat that we’re going to
introduce to her it’s on solid ground
we’re going to have her get in and get
acclimated kennel kennel good girl good
here this is her first time here what
good girl good good girl
hey here sit yeah sit good sit and what
we’re going to do is we’re going to
throw a water mark out here in the
decoys and have her retrieve it from the
boat and come back to the boat
yeah good girl good sit sit good go
ahead shake good girl good girl you can
say Phoebe is really comfortable in the
boat but she probably needs a little
work
retrieving into the decoys jumping out
of the boat and we need to move the boat
to the water make sure she’s nice and
steady next we’re going to move over to
land and do diversion marks where she’ll
retrieve a mark and then on her way back
another one will be thrown also we’re
going to introduce the gun for the first
time so all this will be a new
experience for Phoebe you can imagine
when you’re out hunting a lot of birds
are being shot that your dog might get a
little confused
so as you’re setting them for a mark and
on the way back another bird lands and
your dog drops that bird goes over to
pick up a different one that’s called
switching and that’s really not good you
you want the dog to return to you with
the first bird before picking up the
next one so we’re going to run a
diversion it’s called a diversion mark
will throw a mark and then as she’s
coming back we’re going to launch
another bumper and this is her first
time so let’s see how Phoebe does you go
girl
here mark mark
baby good girl good good
here here sit here sit Marc Marc Phoebe
here here here sit Marc good here
Phoebe back back baby’s a little
concerned back her first time doing a
diversion Marc she was very confused and
that’s really the first time she’s ever
done a diversion Marc so you can see how
dogs can react sit good girl drop
can we do that again you go girl
here mark mark baby
good girl well she’s a natural at this
here here here sit mark sit drop mark
baby well I’m really pleased how Phoebe
did she showed us a lot of control on
the diversion and from the first time
where she was really confused the second
time she seemed to understand it and
that’s showing me the ability for her to
learn some technical skills that she
will need to be a great hunting dog
so so far Phoebe has experienced the
boat decoys duck calls the diversion
mark now the only thing left is the gun
so what we’re going to do is shoot over
Phoebe so that when we go hunting it’s
not the first time she’s had a gun shot
over her in the way we will do this it’s
by launching a bumper out in the field
here here Phoebe here heal heal heal
heal mark mark sit mark when I
introduced the gun I really liked using
primers they’re not as loud and it gets
it’ll get Phoebe kind of used to the
noise she had the gun shot in the field
and now we’re going to shoot right over
her mark
baby
and you can see she handled that really
well for her first time good girl
here here sit good
Phoebe you did a great job we still have
some work to do but we have plenty of
time to get ready for this next hunting
season and so do you so I hope you get
out and you spend some time training
your dog and while you’re at it practice
some shooting if you’re looking for a
place to shoot visit the NS SF’s website
where to shoot that org and remember
firearm safety depends on you
