Dog Training in public places- What about the other dogs? America’s Canine Educator
this goes for any dog owner that’s
dealing with any type of aggression
reactivity or fearfulness you can pretty
much ruin your entire cycle of
productivity and progression by going
out and and dealing with the public it’s
the hardest thing to do and so this is
going to be a perfect example of a dog
that is going to be basically like the
public so I’m gonna get here riled up
I’ll get her pulling me on the leash a
little bit and the biggest thing you got
to understand is you got to pick your
battles so if you’re working with a dog
that’s reactive and you’ve made really
great progression and you’re super happy
with it and you’re getting to a good
place
don’t try to ruin it by saying okay here
comes a guy walking their dog like this
and he’s waving you down go it’s okay
it’s friendly kind of you know because
it’s like okay who cares stop let’s get
out of here because we’re not so that’s
the hardest part I mean truly you’re
gonna you’re gonna you’re gonna come
through great bounds and leaps and
you’re gonna do really great with with
with dealing with him with reactivity
and aggression but as soon as it comes
to when you go out into public

because I would say 60 to 70% of the
dogs out there are gonna bum-rush you
and your dog and if there’s an issue
it’s ultimately gonna fall on you
because you have you know so it just
sucks because of that I mean because in
in reality it’s not your fault but it’s
gonna come down to be in your fault
because oh why do you have this dog
that’s this way and so it’s it’s like
humans we can say okay yeah I really
don’t like people so I’m just gonna like
avoid it and not go out dogs don’t have
that choice so here and here’s here’s
the thing is you see how much control I
have over her if I went out and tried to
tell people how much control I ever
heard they wouldn’t believe me so yeah
they wouldn’t care so it’s really hard
for me to work her you know in public
because people like oh cool your dogs
off leash box mine and then they go
right to her like if you walked over to
her she would freak she would freak out
but I know that I not gonna let that
happen
so the ability to control the dog is
she’s not like she wouldn’t play with
him she’s not gonna go after him but she
doesn’t want to like says I’m gonna play
she doesn’t wanna like go with
nose-to-nose so she’s like it she’s a
perfect example of like a working dog
like she’s not mean she’s not aggressive
but if you mess with her when she’s
working she’ll punch in the face that’s
kind of what she’s like
she’s like don’t mess with me I’m
working basically I’m able to weave him
and out and thread the needle with him
because of the foundation we did with
control which is nice that’s it doing
good buddy okay so and that’s where
control over everything and I’m very
very big in that because of that reason
if she was a bat out of hell the
nastiest dog you’ve ever seen wouldn’t
matter because I have so much impulse
control over her so this is a perfect
example of having a dog that could
potentially be your worst nightmare but
it doesn’t matter because she listens to
everything I say so you get a dog may be
super super aggressive and it’s capable
of this kind of obedience but we kill
him because we don’t want to put the
work in for obedience does that make
sense
not easy but if there’s a different road
there’s always a different road

you would have redirected that way a
little bit so all you would have to do
is just pop them that way real quick but
that’s okay yeah and then reset that’s
all direct them and help him give an
outlet because you see he grabs the
leash he doesn’t really know what to do
so if you just redirect him real quick
it gives them an outlet so that’s what
he’s looking for good he’s going up the
leash a little bit so I have to do to
kind of help that is when when you get
super excited like that watch them build
and then just redirect them nicely come
on Paul okay boy so if he wins first
redirect during the wine yep especially
if you can’t control the situation like
that that’s a good example of like you
know somebody barreling down the road
with their 90 pound lab on a harness
where you’re kind of like okay well this
is a huge yeah there’s a train wreck on
the way and this is going to be a
potential gigantic lawsuit or liability
so what do I do
so get out of the way and redirect the
the reactivity because you don’t want to
completely avoid the situation to escape
the behavior you want to avoid the
situation to escape conflict so you want
to you want to try to fix the behavior
at the same time yes
good boy Cora down flats good girl okay
so he’s afraid I think he’s just trying
to escape the the issue yeah like what
is she doing with the yellow thing okay
hey okay thanks
let’s
yes good boy
that’s a point for us remember let’s
flex good girl stay let’s remember the
sonic thing we just got a point there
good out put it out yes I got a point
there lets me keep building these plots
shape out put it out
good girl good boy good points good
that’s good stay okay brick
