Dog Training Tips- Attention On Cue
I want to show you a game that you can play
with your dog to help you maintain your dog’s
attention throughout all types of distractions.
Have you ever struggled to maintain your dog’s
attention while out on a walk. Whether it
be the stinky grass on the ground or another
dog running by or those dreaded squirrels.
Welcome to the Doggie Dojo, my name is Trevor
Smith and today we have Clyde. And I want
to show you how to play the attention game.
First your going to need some of your dog’s
favorite treats. What I want to do is to draw
a line with these treats from his nose up
to my eyes. As soon as I get some eye contact,
I am going to say “Yes” and then reward. “YES!”
Next part of this game, is getting my dog
to look at me for a verbal cue. For some that
is “Look” or “Watch” Today I am going to use
my dog’s name is that is “Clyde” “CLYDE” “YES”
So now comes the real secret to this game.
How to get your dog to ignore distractions
and to focus on you. What we are going to
do now is take the food and move it away from
our face. I am going to put it at my shoulders.
And see if I can get him to look at me for
eye contact. “CLYDE” “YES” I always like to
come back to my face before I reward so my
dog is focused on my face and not on the distraction
which is the food. I have five positions for
you to try on this. The first is the shoulders,
then arms stretched out, then hands behind
the back, then hands at your side, then hands
in front of you. Alright, now it is time for
a BONUS ROUND. What you are going to do is
take the treats, instead of just closed palm
next to your dog’s head. Try it with your
hands open. If your dog is struggling with
this position and trying to get the treats
more then looking at you, then you need to
back up a couple steps in order for your dog
to be successful. I always like to set my
dog up for success. This is a game your playing.
We are having fun with this and if you ever
played a game that you never win, its not
very fun. You got to make sure that your dog
is successful every single time and wins as
much as possible. So that they love playing
these games with you. Next week, I want to
help you guys take this exercise out in public.
Here at the Doggie Dojo, I want to help you
discover the path to Life With Your Dog. I
want to know your dog’s biggest distraction
is. So go ahead an leave a comment below and
