Dog Training Tips : How to Fix Obsessions in Dogs
Hi, this is Ryan Gwilliam with Expert Village,
and I’m going to teach you how to cure your
dog’s obsessions. The other day, actually
a week ago I worked with a dog that was obsessed
with biting people’s hands. He’d get really
excited, he wouldn’t bite you hard, but he
would bite you just to get you to pay attention
to him, and so, eventually had to submit him.
We talked about it on the last segment. You
roll him over onto his side, and I put him
down like this, and then I had to, and then
I put my hand in front of him, and he would
try and bite me every time. So I put on his
choke collar, and I would give him a yank
on the collar every time he would try and
bite my hand, and it took at least thirty
minutes of constantly correcting him. He’d
get worn out, and then as soon as he got his
energy back he’d be back at me biting me again,
and it’s something that the dog’s owners couldn’t,
they tried pepper spray in the mouth, they
tried all kinds of things. They couldn’t get
it to stop until we finally showed him that
we were the pack leader, we were in charge
of him, and not him in charge of us, and that
he was living in our house. So now they, we’re
happy to report that they don’t have a problem
with it any more. Occasionally, he’ll try
and snap at them, but he knows that if he
does you’re going to put him on the ground,
and you’re going to keep him on the ground
until he stops biting, till he has the behavior
that we want him to have. Another thing is
a lot of dogs will be obsessed with balls
and things like that, and so what you would
do is throw the ball, and not let them go
get it. Just claim the ball as yours, and
not let them have it until you decide, and
they will eventually lose that obsession over
the ball.
