(Episode:19) DctK9’s Dog Behavior Question Tuesday

on this episode we’re going to be
covering everything from lunging and
barking on leash separation anxiety and
much much more on episode 19 of dog
behavior question Tuesday
what’s up guys this is blake Rodriguez
with dream come true canine and this is
episode 19 of dog behavior question
Tuesday as always we are a day late
today is Wednesday this should air arm
on our YouTube channel late this evening
around one a.m. or so we’re going to
jump right into it I’ll let you know
kind of what we have going on right now
pretty nice group some of the dogs that
are currently in our board and train
program if you follow our Facebook page
or Instagram page on our periscope which
is live that’s actually really cool i
know a lot of you go back and forth for
those of you that don’t know we do a lot
of awesome stuff on periscope you’ll see
on Instagram a couple weeks ago this is
the same girl that was going after my
dog SoCo um and me when she first
arrived penny she came in just freshly
weaned off of Prozac that the vets
prescriber this one is well fully off of
the prozac and that stuff fluoxetine or
whatever the hell the hell that is we
don’t use that stuff here doing really
good getting a little bit more immersed
into the program getting a little bit
trustworthy and stuff from an obedient
standpoint still working on helping with
the anxiety we also have Sophie who’s
here came for very very nervous fearful
and secured dog and human aggression you
can see she’s around there we got my man
big iron who was lunging at people
lunging at a clothing purses all that
stuff and dogs and he’s hanging out
that’s my boy bigger and he comes to
continue training when the owners are
busy or going away for for travel we got
julieta vicente they had done a board
and trained before back in the day
they’re hanging out they come to
continue training and get their exercise
because once owners get a dose of what
we offer here is just continued that
it’s great who else who we have here we
have dizzy that’s is jen’s dog jen be
Bianchi who’s one of our trainers here
you can see he’s passed out we also got
my uh papaya in the background what was
it like episode nine or something when
she was like showing her teeth and
everything at atticus anxious wreck
outside you can see she’s hanging out
with my dog SoCo and that’s pretty much
what we have going on here arm you guys
into periscope we’re going to be doing a
live periscope
showing a treadmill introduction for
muffin later on today and let’s get into
the show guittard somehow i missed your
question from before i apologize your
question wasn’t brought up last time so
you’ll ask it again you’re right he gets
really anxious and if someone else walks
him while you walk another dog or play
with another dog or that’s when it
happens he doesn’t have separation
anxiety otherwise and is really obedient
any thoughts yeah um sometimes when you
have a dog that’s um hey when you have a
dog good that is used to doing
everything with you it’s really really
difficult when they don’t get the
practice to do things without you so
what I would first start saying is
before you’re handing it off to a
stranger or somebody and then jumping
into um uh you know interacting with
another dog I would practice working on
place work inside the house in a more
sterile environment and having your dog
hold a position while you go to make
their food while you go to make that
your self ice cream while you’re
engaging with another dog and let your
dog learn how to do that eventually the
next step is making sure that that human
and should give them to that you give
your dog to is capable to to actually
correct and say don’t worry about them
when I have the leash you’re with me
focus on what we’re doing and if your
dog has a balanced on lifestyle
throughout a correction is very
understandable understanding to the dog
and it was like okay I can take
direction from you I’ll give you a
really cool story on back I guess it was
in 2011 or so maybe 2000 yeah 2011 I
went to to work with Cesar Millan at his
training center in california and um we
were doing a pack walk and I was the one
walking a dog so I had about maybe nine
to 11 dogs walking in my hands and he
was like all right you’re gonna start
passing that to the the next person that
wants to walk so i went ahead and i gave
him to every dog that was walking fine
one hand right walking perfect i went
ahead and i passed it on to the next
person and little by little the things
that i wasn’t the things that I was
doing that they weren’t
any sign of concern of their owners
being back there showing them basically
this is what you got to focus on turned
into dogs getting worried and before you
knew it it went from this and this nine
dogs that were walking perfectly to
about 8 8 to 8 out of 11 dogs I’d say
that were full out trying to pull to get
back to their owners because the person
that had the leash wasn’t confident
enough to say this is what we’re doing
don’t focus seizure saw that he ran up
grab them and the same group of dogs a
little bit of touches boom we’re doing
this don’t focus on them and they were
totally different dogs so that human
needs to also be kind of willing to give
direction and say listen I know that’s
the one that’s normally your captain but
right now you need to trust that you can
take direction from me so before we put
all the responsibility on that human
let’s make sure that your dog is used to
doing that when you’re around right
meaning you’re able to have him or her
on place while you’re working with
another dog no problem or even working
that dog for food that’s very important
basil hi Blake thanks for answering my
question is 0 14 no problem those small
tips really made all the difference I’m
super super happy to hear that when
working an insecure dog for their food
and having them only eat from your hands
or certain people’s hands do you ever
run into the problem of them starting to
become picky and dependent on your hand
feeding them when it’s eventually time
for them to eat from a bowl again okay
so there’s a good question also I’m not
sure this is a separate question but how
would you bring out some food drive and
a dog that generally has a low appetite
okay so for the first question yeah
that’s a little bit comment on we have
some dogs that actually Phoebe was one
she got so used to this little dog
working for a food that when we put it
in her bowl the first time a couple
times she didn’t want to eat so in that
situation you treated no differently
than you would um when a dog doesn’t eat
from your hands and you know they’re we
eat from a food bowl you don’t give it
to them in the food bowl this is the
only way you eat so what happens is you
give that to them give them 10 minutes
they don’t eat it take it away right and
then don’t give it to them in an hour or
at lunchtime or in a couple of hours
wait until dinner time you give it again
and you stand that routine eventually
the dogs going to eat
because it’s if it’s only a food bowl
that’s holding the dog back then the dog
will figure it out the dogs I to eat at
some point now to answer your second
question for a low appetite cut back on
all the other treats cut back on
everything else cut back on your dog
eating from the bowl and all that stuff
dog only eats from your hand period the
drive will come right one hundred
percent the drive will come a dog will
start regularly eating for your food now
there are some situations where you
might not have a super super gunhold
dr.e dog but you have a dog that knows
to come for you for food so you won’t
have a problem with that you just have
to stay consistent a lot of times people
try to work a dog for the food the
motivation is not there and they go well
yeah we work she took a little bit and
then we put the food bowl down and she
ate it after you’re never gonna have a
dog that is eager to do that if they
know they’re gonna get it anyway I’m not
going to be eager to work overtime if I
know I’m gonna get paid time-and-a-half
whether I work overtime or not right so
that that’s basically the concept let’s
see what else we have here Trudy Phoebe
and Darcy actually just went home so we
have some some catching up to do you
have you have the tough part now you’re
learning how to re adapt to the new
lifestyle and everything before our our
go home session which I’m really really
looking forward to but your question
here I have a question unrelated to my
pups aggressive behavior do you have any
suggestions on how to successfully
transition a dog from cans wet food to
dry food and believe it or not we
actually did with your dog so you came
in with dry food with treats with wet
food with this and everything and it was
a very specific we give them the dry and
then we give them this spoonful and this
is the only way they eat this and then
we give them the soft if they don’t like
this what we did from the very beginning
they came in dry food only wet food we
didn’t even touch it and the wet food
was because they needed to take their
meds what they need to swallow this you
went home at every bit of the wet food
so assuming that you’re not having your
dog on crap food like Hills or science
diet or something and it’s a healthy
food a healthier kibble even though all
cable is processed what you’re doing is
the dog is only
from there and you’re not feeling bad if
they miss a meal because this is there’s
a very big difference there’s a
difference from withholding your dog’s
food versus you giving them one to two
opportunities a day typically two to eat
if you’re regularly giving them two
opportunities a day and it has to come
from you you’re not withholding the food
they’re the ones that are opting out and
as long as you’re being fair about it
they’ll catch up they’ll catch on really
really quickly I assure you so that’s
actually easier than than people might
think um let’s see Catherine with
Harvard your shirt is awesome standing
next to these dogs that was for what
picture was that I’ll prove people wrong
yeah definitely thank you I appreciate
that um Steph sutherlin so here you go
she’s not ready for front row Sophie but
she is in the back right so she’s
chilling out this is her first her first
dog behavior question a place appearance
his first and her first so this is a big
deal right now a lot of dogs that have
dog human aggressive issues and they’re
all here so that’s freaking awesome um
let’s see what else who are looking at
JD big fan of your work please please
help me understand my dog’s behavior
she’s a three year olds pitbull and on
walk she barks and lunges at other dogs
and makes this high-pitched screaming
sound it’s very embarrassing and
frustrating because I walk her daily so
walk shouldn’t be anything new to her I
believe it has to be I believe it to be
fear-based because when we were going
when we were in a group setting with
other dogs like a training class she is
she has her tail between her legs and
when she needs dog she tries to crawl
under them I feel like I have another
dog by the end of my leash went in a
group she goes from zero to 100 in a
blink of an eye so it’s hard to get her
under control once she is locked in on
something he’s a prong collar and she is
good on our walks until she sees another
dog please help she wasn’t always like
this I don’t know what change all right
I’m gonna go ahead and say that’s
exactly what you have here in this dog
so keep tabs on our Facebook page with
penny penny is the dog that are you’ll
see this about a week or two ago two
weeks ago we have an Instagram
what you see how she was we walked her
we’re still working on her walking and
getting her to focus its fear anxiety
related unsure to the point where it’s
become a habit so what you need to be
doing is a lot more calming exercises a
lot more duration exercises I’m going to
post something on our Facebook page
tonight that shows the impulse control
work that we’re doing with her in here
and how we’re going to be using that to
transfer into more real-world situations
on the walk one of the things that I
suggest getting your dog better on leash
a lot of times people say that the walk
is better when they put their dog on a
prong but the dog is still walking on
pressure you must make sure your dog is
not walking on leash pressure at all
even though the dog is walking better
you must make sure that when you apply
leash pressure you’re doing it in a way
that guides the dog’s head even if the
dogs ahead of you not pulling back guide
the dog know how to manipulate and
really really steer that dog that’s a
must then i would highly suggest if you
have a dog that is that difficult and to
be clear we trained dogs and remote
colors whether they’re difficult or not
but when they are difficult it’s that
much easier right um train a dog on a
remote collar properly soft stuff
teaching the dog what to do way before
you teach a dog what not to do that’s
important and you’re doing in a way
where you’re teaching leash pressure is
the start to recall come over here learn
how to turn away get the dog consistent
with low level stuff and little by
little push the limits in the boundaries
where you can work at a greater
proximity with dogs or something being
there instead of trying to try to drive
by it get the dog to see and then maybe
take a wide turn and continue walking
that way so when she wants to focus and
look back you can control the head
without the whole body facing this way
and going against leash pressure does
that make sense so that’s really really
important she need to make sure anything
you want to add to that you know he’s
over there on his phone I can tell
because when I got off the camera didn’t
camera didn’t go with me so he’s a yeah
he didn’t even realize until I told nuts
hey what’s ugly arm so that’s pretty
much hey so even here I kind of
basically have to help them because
somebody that knows he walks up but
that’s part of the distraction that’s
part of real world stuff nope see right
there she was about to growl and bark
and that was a verbal nope I should
definitely help and pair this with
remote color software it’s like me
tapping her shoulder on that high level
in her but at the same time it’s letting
her know nope you don’t have to worry
about that right um so you can see that
there that’s nervous even though she’s
bad tough means
you
oh boom we’re back we are back arm so
yeah so just helping her out that’s the
real world stuff that we look for you
know what I mean like we look to embrace
this so arm basically forgot what we’re
talking about so you see how easily I
get distracted Sampson down what’s up
here I printing this section down but um
basically setting up so that this is
important go with me for a second um if
I am I see it if I am applying leash
pressure this way a dog should turn this
way and pressure should shut off hi if
you don’t have a dog that is turning
this way and when they see a distraction
over here you’re doing this and they’re
putting their butts towards you
basically flipping you off saying yeah I
know what you’re saying but right now I
need to be doing this that’s what you
need to work on so there’s a couple
things you need to be firmer on the
leash or your dog doesn’t know the leash
well enough or you’re waiting too long
before you are giving direction to help
advocate for your dog and show them you
don’t have to do this you actually don’t
have to worry about that you can focus
on me so a lot of times all this
aggression stuff that you see is
fear-based it’s not real aggression it
doesn’t mean that a dull won’t bite
somebody doesn’t mean that it’s all
gonna bite a dog but at the end of the
day it’s not what people think it is it
derives of insecurity fear and a lack of
of clarity and understanding that a dog
can actually choose to do something else
that’s where we come in right sometimes
you got to be firm sometimes you have to
slow it down and be in a more sterile
environment and take it easy everything
is a little bit different and it’s all
based on reading it and getting a better
feel for the dog right um hey whats up
guys really really quickly we’re in the
middle of editing this and I realized
that I overlooked iron shamrocks
questions so hey Blake how long do you
work a dog with a prong collar Samson
before transitioning to an e-collar what
behaviors attributes are you looking for
with the prong two
no one is a good time for transition
down um that’s a great question there’s
a couple ways to do it so there’s
nothing wrong with starting a dog from
the start if you really know what you’re
doing and you’re pairing it right for
most people that’s really really
difficult and you can actually
potentially stress a dog out so anywhere
from I’d say three days to two weeks
depending on there’s a couple things
you’re looking at you’re looking at the
dog you’re looking at your handling
skills and you’re looking at what you’re
asking for what you’re getting and what
you’re not getting ideally you’re
already getting the behaviors that
you’re going to be asking for on our
remote so you’re just teaching a
language it’s like hey you know these
words you know these commands now when
you feel this that means what you’re
already doing so that kind of just some
answers your question um we have yet to
do remote color stuff maybe we just
started no we didn’t actually with with
muffin and muffins been here for over a
week so that just kind of lets you know
um we’re doing stuff with her we
typically wait about a week the first
week is just working the dogs and then
we go into it the reality is you can
jump into it if you’re if you know what
you’re doing but most people don’t so um
we just slow it down it’s easier for the
clients easier for the trainers and
that’s pretty much it all right so
that’s where that is hopefully that
helps and you know what that actually is
everything for episode 19 of dog
