German Shepherd Types
David Harris here with some of my German
Shepherd friends and today we’re just
going to talk about German shepherds
everybody wants to know a lot about
German shepherds and there’s a lot of
misinformation out there on the Internet
I’ve been training developing breeding
German Shepherds for over 30 years and I
want to just share some of that
information with you
[Music]
first of all the most important thing to
understand about German shepherds is
there’s a lot of different types of
German shepherds the German Shepherd is
not just a German Shepherd just a German
Shepherd we have working line German
shepherds we have show line German
shepherds we have dogs that were bred
specifically for police work or for
sport work a lot of people will think Oh
black German Shepherd is bred for a
specific purpose but really it’s just a
colour now some of the colours are more
associated with certain activities like
disables are very commonly used in
police work and sport work and the
beautiful fluffy black and red
rin-ten-ten type German Shepherds are
used more commonly for conformation or
show when we talk about showing we have
conformation showing just a beauty
contest it’s all about looks it has
nothing to do with the dog’s temperament
or train ability it’s just about looks
and we talk about competition type dogs
or sport dogs we’re talking about dogs
that are bred specifically for the
temperament characteristics the training
characteristics of a sport dog and then
we have all other types of activities
that German Shepherds seeing-eye dogs
search-and-rescue dogs and they all have
certain characteristics based on their
breeding but today we just want to show
you some different types of German
shepherds and let’s you see with your
own eyes what they look like this is
Khoa West German show lines very
attractive dog with a temperament suited
for that purpose this is Euler this is a
cross between West German and chuckles a
walk in working lines what we have here
is a sable German Shepherd he has a very
very tight coat and this is a very
appropriate dog for sport work or police
a personal protection type work this dog
is a multi-purpose type dog can do all
kinds of work this is Panzer hour by
black ear and a half old male he’s
across between working lines out of
Europe old police dog style lines and
some Czech bloodlines that have show
lines as well as working lines his face
is completely black and he has markings
on his legs that’s why he’s I buy a
black this is Kojak long coded German
Shepherd it’s more of a plush versus
along but he is a coded German Shepherd
there’s no doubt that he’s a plush the
long coated German Shepherd would
actually have hair coming out of their
ears they’re got so much coat almost
looked like Lassie so this is a coded
black and red German Shepherd this is
Deckard black and red German Shepherd
combination of show lines out of West
Germany and working lines he’s got a
normal stock coat
so that’s Decker he’s just a seven month
old puppy what we have here is a solid
black German Shepherd it’s a young
female seven months old but as you can
see she is solid black has no markings
whatsoever this is West German show
lines and working lines combined
sometimes you’ll get little tan markings
in between their toes those are sort of
called ghost markings so you’ll have
that and what we have here is Nick he’s
a sable as well but he has a more
heavier coat so there’s just some of the
different types and colors of German
Shepherds some of the other drummers
scheppers we don’t have represented here
today our American show line German
Shepherd those are the ones that have
extreme sloping back think you could see
off their back sometimes they’re a lot
more narrow it through the chef’s and
they have a much more extreme angle we
don’t have any white German Shepherds
here today I don’t have anything you
guess white Shepherds if they’re bred
properly a white German Shepherd should
have a black nose he should have dark
nails
most of the white German Shepherds we
see come through here at pink noses
light eyes white nails and these are all
faults that are just not being handled
properly by good breeding but if you run
across a white Shepherd that is read
properly it can be a phenomenal dog okay
so kind of wrap up here we’ve got four
different types of German shepherds when
I think about German shepherds we have
working lines out of Europe we have show
lines out of Europe they’re really very
different temperament types we have
American show lines here in the United
States that are bred for a total
different purpose and we have what I
call an American Farm Shepherd this is
just a dog with literally no pedigrees
just a German Shepherd to name only and
it’s kind of hard to think about it this
way but the American farm Trevor will
have almost no angle very Square back
straight up and down legs front legs and
back legs almost no angulation the
American show line German Shepherd is
going to have that extreme sloping back
with extreme angulation in its hocks and
front end in the shoulder so the German
show line dog is less extreme than
American show line dogs but has a
tendency to range in the extreme slope
category they’re bigger more powerful
looking dogs with bigger coats and
bigger heads and a lot of thought put
into pigment looks not so much thought
put into the working ability and then
you have your German working line dogs
which are bred strictly for working
ability and sometimes can range towards
the ugly they can just not be correctly
put together they don’t follow sometimes
great breeding practices about having a
cool den tation they don’t really care
about whether the dogs here shoot out
this way or color or coat type all they
care about is working ability and
there’s a lot of extremes in breeding
German Shepherds at protection dog cells
my bloodlines proof and pudding
bloodlines
I’m breeding for a balanced dog I want
to do it looks good its conformation Lee
correct he can do his job conformation
serves a purpose there’s a reason behind
the angulation or lack of angulation or
extremum angulation we know what type of
angulation they need to do their job so
it’s going to depend on what you want
your dog to do is what you need to look
for but we’re always looking for balance
in all things ok I hope you enjoyed the
little parade of German shepherds
getting to see a lot of different types
side by side and moving and don’t forget
to check out our other
videos and protection dog cells we have
all different types of videos I hope you
enjoyed this little short trip down
German Shepherd memory lane
