GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER – Characteristics and Training

the German Shorthaired Pointer one of
the most loyal and active dog breeds the
German Shorthaired Pointer is a very
popular breed in its place of origin
Germany little is known about their
exact history although it is thought
they are a mixture of Spanish and
English pointers as well as some other
hunting dog breeds its genealogy is not
known for certain there is a document
from the 19th century in which Prince
Albert zoos owns braunfels establishes
the breed characteristics rules of
judging their morphology and the basic
rules of work testing for hunting dogs
the German Shorthaired Pointer is a tole
muscular and strong dog with fine
proportions and dark brown eyes their
olfactory capacity is exceptional and
they have great physical stamina their
fur is short tight and rough they can be
solid brown brown with white spots
rusted brown white with a brown head or
rusted black their height at the withers
is between 62 and 66 centimeters in
males and 58 and 66 centimeters in
females the weight of both is between 25
and 30 kilograms the hunting nature of
this pointer defines their temperament
they are an active lively and
intelligent dog which enjoys outdoor
activities in the company of their
family they are perfect if you have
adequate space and sufficient time
requiring Guardians here are dynamic
individuals or families who enjoy a lot
of outdoor activity they are not good
for sedentary or indoor people when they
are socialized from an early age the
German Shorthaired Pointer develops into
a friendly dog with other canines
animals and even strangers they are also
usually very friendly and playful with
children as with any dog if you have
small pets in the home it’s essential
the pointer is well socialized with them
for a young age as their hunting
instincts may
with the onset of attitude if we neglect
their need for activity socialization or
stimulation the German Shorthaired
Pointer can be destructive or overly
vocal although the German Shorthaired
Pointer sheds fairly regularly caring
for their coat is simple and not too
time-consuming regular brushing every
two or three days to keep their fur in
good condition and bathing once every
two months or so or when 30 should be
sufficient during their puppy stage we
need to teach them the basics such as
urinating on newspaper before doing it
outside controlling their bite
inhibition and socializing properly with
other dogs people and animals although
intelligent dogs which can be trained
with relative ease the German
Shorthaired Pointer can be easily
distracted so short daily education
sessions several times a day are
required due to their excellent
olfactory capacity the German
Shorthaired Pointer can be an excellent
police dog especially for tracking
fugitives or sniffing out contraband
such as explosives or drugs of the most
common diseases associated with this
breed we highlight hip dysplasia entropy
on gastric torsion and progressive renal
atrophy they are also susceptible to
lymphatic obstruction and ear infections
detecting such problems promptly and
following vaccination schedules are
important care requirements as is taking
them to the vet every six months or so
it is also useful to deworm them
regularly both internally and externally

attention they can enjoy a life of up to
