German Shorthaired Pointer Review
hi everybody welcome back to another
episode of breed review I’m Leah Murphy
and today I’ll be reviewing the driven
to Atia point alright so the German
Shorthaired Pointer originates from
Germany they were used as an all-purpose
gun dog or a bird dog if you will the
originated from dogs such as the English
Pointer the spanish pointa in some
german hound breeds as well these guys
are considered a lodge breed they range
anywhere from about 45 to 70 pounds
males obviously being bigger than the
female see they’re very clean short coat
on them hence the word German
Shorthaired Pointer they do shed daily
so grooming requirements for these guys
it’s just you want to make sure that you
brush them often but that’s really about
it very low-maintenance grooming dog
they have very long ears pendulous lips
as they say
meaning they hang down a little bit
that’s probably where they get the Hound
blood and all that very long but square
and sturdy muzzle for carrying heavier
game but mostly primarily these guys
used as a bird dog tall lean muscular
dog extremely strong they don’t look it
they’re a little bit on the lanky side
but very very strong dogs as I said they
were originally bred as a bird hunting
dog and they still are used in bred
today for the same purpose okay so let’s
get right into the review all right
starting off let’s start with health
pretty healthy dog not a whole lot of
health issues hip dysplasia is a
probably the main one that you have to
worry about they are a deep chested dog
which means they have a deep chest that
boxes have it greyhounds have it these
guys certainly do if you look at them
from the side you see their chests kind
of right like an hassle and most right
you know what I mean now deep chested
dogs run a higher risk for getting
what’s called blow and bloat is when the
stomach twists on itself and gases get
trapped in there causing pressure and
can cause death very quick something you
really want to watch out for because you
have to treat it instantly if you don’t
the dog will die from it but other than
that again that’s not super common
neither is a hip dysplasia in these guys
I would say that a very healthy breed in
my opinion these guys have worked with
for a long time they live long healthy
life 12 to 14 years so for health I’m
gonna give the German Shorthaired
Pointer a four point nine one of these
days I’m gonna do an outtake video these
days one of these days I’m gonna do an
outtake video so you guys can see c’mere
so you got to see what it takes for me
to be able to keep these guys actually
on the couch for the whole video it’s
not that simple I know it looks like
they just laying in there the whole time
but generally these 5 to 10-minute
videos take me about a half hour to make
because I’m consoling chasing them I’ll
be right back
Cooper come on the people are waiting
for you jeez jeez Louise Cooper alright
alright let’s get back into it where was
I
activity okay let me start off with
activity before I get into temperament
because activity is going to help
determine their temperament I’ll try to
make sense of all that not a whole lot
of bad things with these guys have it
very good dog there is one though I’m
kind of talk about I have it I have to
bring it up they are the biggest
crybabies on the face of the planet but
only if they’re not worked appropriately
only if they’re not given the right
amount of activity okay they were bred
as a bird dog right as a bird hunting
dog I don’t mean that if you get one of
these dogs you have to hunt it
personally I think that’s the best
option somebody who does bird hunt if
you’re a bird hunter this makes a great
dog for you but I’m not gonna say that
you have to go hunt to own one of these
dogs I’m not but you should work the
reactivity around hunting and what I
mean by that is taken to places where
there are bird where we have bird
hunting is allowed doesn’t need to go
during hunting season you go offseason
take into a quail field tell me where
it’s stocked with quail or pheasant and
have them work the fields you have to
shoot the bird you can bring a camera
with you and shoot them that way if you
want or just let them do it
I think it’s important for them to get
that natural instincts to get out in the
woods with their nose down outworking
flushing game take them to a pond having
retrieved bumpers stuff like that
simulate some sort of a hunting activity
role with them I think that’s so
important that’s gonna be so important
with these guys if you’re somebody who’s
willing to do something like that then
these guys are a great great fit so for
activity for these guys I’m gonna give
them a 5 and I’m gonna roll right into
temperament now let’s say for kids like
I said these guys are very good with
kids they do get very easily excited
they are jumpy breed so maybe jumping on
them that’s the only issue with these
guys that you have to worry about an
excellent dog to have with others they
play very nice with others now again
they were bred to be out in the field
with other dogs that couldn’t be having
dog fights and guns in the same spot
could you imagine that make great family
pets great with people great with little
kids great with other dogs
overall temperament for these guys I’m
gonna give them a five trainability
that’s an interesting one a lot of
people who have these dogs will say
there are a lot of work and they are a
lot of work they balk a lot they’re very
intense they jump they do a lot of
different things but they were designed
to hunt
don’t forget so so as far as your basic
obedience they are a little bit harder
to deal with as far as jumping up on
people barking and things like that but
when you take them out into the field
and you train them they pick it up like
that very quick very fast and that’s why
a lot of hunters using today because
they are so good and they are so easily
trained in in the world of hunting so
for me what I would suggest is again
kind of like with activity right you
want to do the same thing with trained
trained them to hunt Birds focus on what
they were bred for if you do that you’d
have a much better chance at I guarantee
it I guarantee you you will doesn’t it
feel a lot more satisfied doing
activities that I was meant to do it’s
gonna allow you to use all the senses
you know their nose the ears their eyes
all that stuff it could be a lot easier
to get that dog into a common state of
mind doing those type of activities as
opposed to not allowing not giving that
outlet in forcing it into some sort of a
you know like that’s like square like
sit down and don’t move and be quiet and
that all that type of craft it just
doesn’t work for a working dog it just
it doesn’t guys you got to give them if
you get in the Shorthaired Pointer
they’re bred to do something do it with
them again you don’t have to get a gun
and kill an animal if you don’t want to
that’s fine but you can’t simulate
for training I’m gonna give them a five
for training if you’re doing it the
right way if you utilizing them in the
proper way okay that’s it guys that’s a
German toward a point let’s review let’s
recap now first thing you want to make
sure you get a get out you gotta get a
shotgun and you get up side killing some
birds alright let’s go let’s pick it up
you guys know I’m kidding obviously no
that’s not it but you know focus on on
what they were bred for simulate some of
those activities for them I think if
there’s somebody who’s active if you
like being outside if you like nature
these are a great dog for you low
maintenance grooming dog short super
clean coat very easy to manage they do
continuously shed so you got to make
sure you stay up on top of their
brushing other than that very easy
grooming great with kids great with
other animals a really really excellent
family companion alright guys thanks
