Get Rid of the Food Bowl and Resolve your Dogs Behavior Problems
welcome to Dunbar Academy quick tips I’m
Jamie Dunbar and today’s quick tip is
about getting rid of something that
almost all dog owners use
[Music]
now the item I’m about to show you may
look innocent enough but in reality it’s
actually very bad for both your dog’s
physical and mental health that’s right
the food bowl feeding your dog from a
food bowl Rod’s your dogs with favorite
activity and completely D values one of
the most powerful and important tools
you have for training and yet many dog
owners do it every day without a
moment’s hesitation as a result the
simplest and most effective dog training
tip is this don’t feed your dog from a
food bowl you should only consider
feeding your dog from a food bowl if
they are perfectly behaved if your dog
has any sort of behavior problems or if
you’re introducing a new puppy or dog to
your home you should never feed them
from a food ball don’t even think about
it
look food can be incredibly useful in
training it’s convenient effective and
for some training
it really is indispensable but if your
dog gets to eat their fill from a bowl
without expending any effort and the
power gets totally undermined many
owners complain that their dog is not
food motivated I guarantee those dogs
are very food motivated all animals are
these dogs just get all the food they
want without much effort but when you
stop feeding a dog from a bowl they
quickly develop a renewed interest in
food before domestication dogs spent
most of their waking time obtaining food
feeding a dog from a bowl robs them of
one of their biggest passions in life
dogs are wired to work for food it’s
what they do but if you take that away
then your dog is going to be forced to
come up with new activities to occupy
themselves and you’re probably not going
to like them incessant barking
destructive chewing escaping digging and
self-destructive OCD behaviors all
developed when a dog is left alone with
nothing to do because their whole reason
for living has been destroyed by a
stupid bowl filled with food that said
there are some dogs were still very food
motivated
despite being fed from a bowl these dogs
usually wolf food down whenever they are
presented with it as quickly as they can
which is bad for their digestion and can
sometimes lead to a painful and
dangerous health condition called bloat
so hopefully I’ve convinced you to throw
your food bowl away but now you’re
probably wondering if I don’t feed my
dog from a bowl
how should I feed them here’s what you
do measure out your dog’s daily diet in
the morning and put it all into a big
jar in a central place use this food
throughout the day for training for most
dogs you’ll want to use some of the food
as rewards while working on obedience
skills you’ll want to use some of it
training your dog to be calm and
confident and you’ll want to stuff the
rest of it into hollow chew toys to give
to your dog whenever you want them to
settle down especially when they’re left
alone if you use all of your dog’s food
for training their behavior will improve
quickly once your dog is well-behaved
enough for you you could consider
feeding them from a bowl you might even
have a cute little graduation ceremony
where you present your dog with their
bowl and maybe a nice diploma saying
that they are a pretty good dog but be
aware if you start feeding them from a
food bowl again there’s a chance their
behavior may deteriorate in which case
you’ll want to resume using all of their
food for training and even if your dog
is totally perfect we would still
suggest you feed them a good amount of
their food from hollow chew toys
especially if you plan on leaving them
alone for any long period of time I mean
if you are left alone wouldn’t you want
something to do ok before we wrap up
let’s do a quick review number 1 ditch
the dish number 2 hand feed your dog
during training number 3 feed your dog
from hollow 2 toys and finally number 4
only consider going back to a food bowl
when your dog’s behavior is perfect
so please repeat after me I will not
feed my dog from a food bowl until they
are perfect or at least good enough for
me
I hope you’ve enjoyed this Dunbar
