How to Check a Sled Dog | Yukon Do It
oh you look beautiful on your tape
they’re so pretty
yeah you’re a great sheet hi I’m dr.
Oakley and I’m here in the Yukon
checking on some sled dogs are about to
go on a big trip so I’m going to show
you some of the things I’m looking at
with these dogs they’re definitely built
for the trail and speed but these
animals are going to be going a long
ways so we’re gonna have a really good
look at their feet before they go thank
you you’re showing me look for things
like cracks any little nips of frostbite
any sort o nails feet looks great your
feet look good too
one thing we really want to check is to
make sure they’re well hydrated and
ready to go so one place to check that
is up here on their lip it’s nice and
pink and it’s nice and moist you can
also tent their skin a little bit pull
up their skin it should go right back
down as long as they’re well hydrated
can’t go on a big trip without hydration
of course they’re all athletes so it’s
really important to listen to their
heart and make sure that everything’s
ticking how it should be and they have
really nice slow athletic cars which
sounds awesome boom boom boom boom boom
boom boom boom it’s great there’s no
extra sounds like murmurs no
irregularities perfect you’re ready to
go how about you another thing I look at
is body condition these guys are great
sled dogs are actually smaller than a
lot of people think for most lines and
they’re also definitely the thinner kind
of body type and they need to be because
they go for long distances awesome I’m
also feeling the limbs too for any
Spelling’s or tendons or little lumps or
bumps that might cause a problem on the
trail back door nice and clean it’s
important to check the back door because
you can see things like dried feces if
they’ve had some problems with diarrhea
you can see all kinds of issues back
there sometimes if it’s a male they get
frostbite on their scrotum and it’s
really important to watch for that you
really go for a ride huh gonna go for a
run these guys are looking great and
we’re ready for the trail yeah hi
you
