How To Teach a Dog To Fetch | Dog Trainings Tips | Blue Cross
hello my name is Claire and this is Ryan
and we’re both blue cross behaviorist
and this is Ryan’s dog top in this
training video we’re going to be talking
to you all about the game of fetch now
fetch is a fantastic game that you can
play with your dog and most owners will
want to do this at some point there’s a
couple of really important things to
remember firstly is that some dogs
aren’t natural retrievers so you’ll have
to show them what you want them to do
and secondly a lot of dogs can do
themselves a little bit of damage
running full power ball someone’s going
to teach you how to safely enjoy this
game okay
so stage one it’s all about just
teaching the very very basics and I like
to start this process by using a
training dumbbell but it can be anything
that you like really the point is that
this isn’t going to be a really exciting
toy so nothing that is soft or squeaks
and certainly not your dog’s favorite
toy not at this particular stage so I’m
using it because it’s hard and it’s
quite dull so it’s a great sort of first
level object to start with I’ve got my
treat bag with lots of tasty treats in
and all I’m going to do really is ask
him to come towards me and to place his
teeth on and the moment he does that I’m
gonna say yes and I’m gonna give him a
tasty treat so let’s see how he gets on
Chuck yes good boy that’s very clever
and I’m just gonna repeat that again
Chuck
that’s good boy top was this yes good
boy talk Huestis yes good boy I do this
a lot with talk and if you’re starting
off for the first time you’ll need to do
this loads and loads and loads so that
that becomes a really strong behavior
and the next stage would be get it
getting it oh yes good boy is the Iola
just start plunking this on the floor in
the hope that he picks it up and brings
it to me
sit good boy yes good boy what are we
doing what are we doing sit good boy
yes good boy that’s very clever there’s
some cheese for you one more time bitch
yes good boy so you can see with a lot
of repetition how this training will
start to take shape sit and now I’m
gonna start throwing it out a little bit
further
oh very clever yes good boy you can see
him wagging his tail there in the
enthusiasm he really doesn’t like to
play this game don’t you sit throw it
out a bit more tuck pitch yeah yes good
but yes good boy okay so far so good
you okay you sit
so this time I’m going to send him in
the hope that he’s going to pick it up
and when he returns to me I’m gonna
start moving around because I want him
to get excited and to just seek me out
and to bring that toy to me talk bitch
oh good boy oh good boy oh good boy
oh good boy yes good boy that’s very
good okay are you ready are you ready oh
that was good you sit fetch
that’s very good that’s very good that’s
very good that’s very good yes good boy
so now we’re moving on to toys and there
are loads of different types of toys out
there that you can use to play fetch
it’s really important that you use the
toy that’s the right size for your dog
because some of these toys can be quite
smaller than running at them quite hard
there is a joking hazard I’m not a huge
fan of tennis balls because they’re
furry and after dog has been playing
with them for a while they can get
slippery and slimy and there is a
greater risk if the dog is running
really hard and it’s a large dog that
they may choke on them like that I’m
much more of a fan of these type of toys
so these are balls that have a rope
through them that actually helps to
prevent the choking hazard but they also
double up as a Chucky toy too so they
have a multi-purpose this one’s large so
you can see that’s going to be suitable
for a larger type dog but this is the
toy that I’m going to use for this next
exercise so just as before Hey what I’m
going to do is I’m going to get my dog
really keen and excited and I’m gonna
sit in them in a nice static position
and then I’m gonna throw the toy away
and then I’m gonna send him on get when
he’s got it I’m gonna make a big fuss
good boy
get it oh so we just had a little game
of fetch now we’re having a little game
of tug really reinforcing that behavior
out good boy and then we’re gonna do
same again he’ll sit a nice static
controlled behavior throw it out
yep yeah what’s this got it I’m gonna
really encourage you back to me hey good
boy boy get it
yeah clever dog clever dog clever dog
apt that’s it you don’t always have to
be throwing at miles and miles and miles
you can kind of change up the game throw
out for a little bit yes God boy what
have you got
or what if you got yeah he’s got it yeah
he’s got it he’s a clever dog you clever
dog out get it good boy
