How to Train ANY DOG the basics- Dog Training foundation
hi LA I don’t want to have to give her a
treat right right I do pulling the leash
get out of control on the leash and go
crazy on the leash well this video is
for you hello everybody and welcome back
to the coolest sultry Channel right here
on YouTube I’m Tom Davis America’s
canine educator today we have a dog in
that’s starting from scratch this is
episode number 1 on the series of just
how to get a dog under control from
start to finish this is a young dog with
not a lot of behavioral problems if any
this is a dog that just really needs
some structure some discipline some
better handling and today I’m really
happy to introduce the the start of this
series and here we go so obviously
pulling on the leash she gets excited to
see people and dogs so kind of just
going through the whole basic foundation
of obedience that sounds good we can do
that okay alright I got so starting with
basics so if your dog is pulling on the
leash as so pulling to get to other dogs
pulling to get to other people the first
thing we have to do is teach the
foundation and the basics of leash
pressure and what I would call on and
off like working and not working because
we can’t have a dog especially young and
playful obviously she wants to do just
be a playful dog but obviously we we
have to have expectations of structure
and some sort of foundational stuff just
like kids so what I’ll do is I’m going
to teach her what this means
so the leash pressure that we’re gonna
provide to the dog is going to be your
your structure machine if you will so
just like horses when you put pressure
on the animals should do something to
shut it off so it’s a form of escape
training obviously she doesn’t like it
she’s not used to pressure and the
majority of the reasons why she’s I mean
you could go on I watched the video the
other night somebody posted you can go
online and find a bunch of different
ways to
do different things whatever suits your
your desires if you are walking backward
what I try to do is do what’s best for
the dog the quickest the most efficient
and then of course the best for you guys
so I’m just going to show you what I’ve
done in the past that makes a lot of
sense we could waive food in the dog
space to redirect the dog but it doesn’t
teach the dog what we want it only it
only is that tasty what it’ll do is
it’ll distract the dog and not really
teach them anything it’ll get them
focused so pretty much anybody with a
pulse can get a bag of hot dogs in their
hand and follow a dog around with with
that but what I want to do is teach the
dog stuff so we’re going to use positive
reinforcement we’re going to use some
pressure impulse control and more
importantly I want the dog to be more
engaged to the handler when they’re on
the leash versus what else can I get
yeah and the reason that is is I love
that temperament and I love the behavior
of the dog of being playful and you know
engaging with other things but it’s a
safety thing because if you’re getting
out of your car and not paying attention
she slips she sees a squirrel or a dog
she’s gone she has no problem with
saying well what are you guys gonna do
about it so I want that trigger in her
head to say I don’t want to get into
trouble where right now it’s kind of
like I do what I want just keep her on
my left side good the goal here guys is
for her to not bounce on the leash so
what she’s gonna do is go Bing Bing Bing
and she’s gonna realize that that sucks
she doesn’t want to do that anymore so
the behavior you’re seeing right now is
what are we doing why are we doing it I
don’t want to so yeah she doesn’t like
it of course she doesn’t but neither do
kids going to first grade or
kindergarten for the first time and then
also she’s just not used to it
okay so you have to just walk her
through it good girl Belle
all right I’m gonna switch to something
else she’s choking herself out pretty
bad see how she’s she’s doing that we
don’t want that to happen it’s okay
so you guys familiar with a prong collar
okay
she’s got unbelievable like rear and
awareness she’s crazy she’s like she’d
be a great trick dog it’s all right all
right okay so a lot of this is is some
dog sir so some dogs are good with this
sub collar and some dogs basically just
freaked themselves out with it
so what the problem yeah so the slip
collar has that restriction which is
nice but see how she’s choking
so the prong collar is gonna be way way
way safer so on the contrary of the
looks and myths and a lot of ignorance
out there the prong collar provides all
of this
so you’ll notice almost immediately the
difference in how she reacts to it but
instead of that one spot from the slip
so the slips gonna go one so it’s only
got one point of pressure prong collar
actually works together collectively and
comes up like this so the prongs are not
what make the dog go I don’t like this
it’s the collective pressure and them
coming together it’s more of a pinch
than anything so see how they come
together yes good you know I’m the bad
guy right now
she’s never been you know she’s never
been told that she has to do something
and she’s feeling all this pressure and
she’s just really conflicted by it so
it’s kind of like just a kid throwing a
tantrum it you just have to like okay
wait it out a little bit but like I said
it we do see this quite a bit with dogs
who were you know sensitive and/or have
haven’t been told know a lot and you
actually make her do something that
she’s never had to do like walk like if
she pulls on that
so she has the flat collar on she’s like
nope I’m not doing it she doesn’t really
have any restriction it has has one
course of action it just stuck there so
with the prong collar it’s like it gives
it it comes in pressure releases
pressure release and she’s never really
experienced anything like that so that’s
why she’s like really freaking out about
it
damn girl there’s a good girl
so that is like when she goes for the
bone and I tell her she can’t that’s
where she gets like so I yes so as
handler I have to be very sensitive to
that empathetic and caring because I
know that that’s just her personality
come on yes she’s just trying to figure
out okay then what am I supposed to do
and once she realizes yes good girl that
this type of behavior gets her
everything that she wants she will more
than likely want to do this more than
anything but we’re taking this really
sharp edge like that’s where she’s at
and we’re just smoothing it out and it’s
gonna take a long time to grind it out
but that’s exactly what we’re doing so
you’re gonna see less freak-outs less
drama and more like hey this isn’t so
bad actually and like I said it has
nothing to do necessarily with the
collar if I were to put a head halter I
did put a slip she did the same thing
any type of collar that’s actually gonna
give her some sort of correction for not
listening she’s gonna want nothing to do
with it she’s like I’m on my own my own
terms but you see when she starts to
grasp what I’m teaching her she’ll go oh
then then she can learn and she’s
learning now it’s just she’s not
learning specific behaviors she’s just
learning how to walk nicely on a leash
but the bigger picture she’s learning
that when this thing comes on that means
that she can she can’t do that it’s like
yeah exactly so whenever she like say I
want her to slow down or stop I’m gonna
give her pressure yeah yeah it’s like
fishing
like just a little bit you’re just
adding a little bit of pressure you’re
not trying to fight with it
you’re just saying like hey this is what
I want you to do so at first she was
like her behavior was hell no I’m not
gonna do any of this I’m gonna flail
around you’re not gonna tell me and the
majority of dog owners and I’ve even
seen trainers at that point say you know
this isn’t gonna work because they don’t
realize that it’s the dog isn’t I mean
yes it’s stressful but like I said so is
going to school for the first time or
doing that big job interview there’s a
lot of stress involved with really great
things but in this situation she’s like
what do we do and I can’t do it and I
and I’ve done this enough and in my
experiences to just know that it’s just
a temporary thing that a dog will just
do that for you know sometimes it lasts
the whole session and sometimes it lasts
you know five to ten minutes but you
just have to grind it out and just teach
her like it’s okay
and so I’m what I’m doing is I’m walking
around and I’m and I’m glad that you
picked up on that because this is not a
tug-of-war game this is a crafts game
I’m basically using my pinky and my
thumb to dictate all of her behavior I’m
feathering her in and I’m just when if
you watch my wrists like if I want to
put pressure I’ll just do this and I’ll
just kind of roll my wrist and I’ll
supply pressure to her when I when she’s
doing something I don’t want her to do
but over time like I said that sharp
edge as you can see is now getting nice
and smooth she’s understanding things
oh wait things aren’t so bad we’re not
gonna die everything’s okay and and then
from here we can teach her sit and down
and place and all that stuff but you
have to get through that the weeds if
you will but yep it’s a very calm thing
what a good girl you are
life isn’t so bad yeah Jessica you can
tell her good he’ll throughout the
process and make sure you’re rewarding
that because the goal is teacher like
okay is marking so when we say marking
it’s basically overlaying a verbal cue
but within this 30-second to forty
second exercise there’s been absolutely
zero consequences because what she’s
done is she’s learned and I taught her
so now I don’t have to use the prong
collar anymore
