How to Turn a Fearful dog into a Protection Dog
all right today’s video how is it
possible to turn a fearful
right again again again
[Music]
give him a shot all right so you see
he’s going backwards right all right
stay like that say that this interest
did right now you move back and forth
right there right because you got to get
his interest dog into an awesome
protection dog now to give you the
backstory on this dog this dog was in
training for one whole year in
protection training and he never came
out he never came through he never got
anywhere in protection the only thing
that he did for a whole year was go and
bite once let go quick and out that was
it he never held on to the sleeve more
than a second or two the whole year and
that was the end of that that’s all they
got from him protection for a whole year
and this is under a certified master dog
trainer that certifies other dog
trainers to be professional dog trainers
now this is nothing against the trainer
this is not about that this is just
giving you an insight on two classic
things that happen
every day inside the dog training world
solo this is a classic case of miss
diagnosis now the trainer had classified
him as just a disinterested dog that’s
lazy that that was what he was tagged as
so and this is a whole year and got
nothing more than one byte per session
that and that’s that done so the lazy
tag got attached to her now when I got
called and I got to the owners house for
the first time the moment I walked in
the house and the dog came and greeted
me right away in my mind I said this
guy’s a coward now I didn’t say anything
for at least an hour so as we had our
conversation because there were many
other dogs involved in this as we were
finishing our conversation I said to
them that he’s not a tough guy he’s a
chicken at heart that’s why he’s not
doing good protection work he’s only
doing a one shot and gone and everybody
was very surprised about that first time
he met my dog who I thought was trained
he tell me my dog was a coward which he
was right he was actually right about my
dog and he my dogs a very big large
German Shepherd almost 140 pounds so he
said he would not impress you as being a
coward but Richard was able to read him
right away now the trick to this this is
tricky because when he came to me and he
greeted me he did not show classic signs
of what somebody would think is fearful
his tail wasn’t tucked down he wasn’t
timid on coming to smell me it was the
way he came
in a normal manner and checked me out I
knew right away this guy was a coward
but you have to have real good instincts
I mean I’ve trained hundreds of
thousands of dogs in my career and
fearful and aggressive is my specialty
right away I knew when he came to me and
greeted me what we had here without any
classic signs of fear so everybody being
surprised about that and I said that’s
why for one whole year all he did was
give one shot and done period no hanging
on to sleep no shaking no engaging none
of it so to the other trainer it
appeared it was just laziness without
ever seeing the signs that he was truly
weak so without the right diagnosis you
cannot pull out the dog and get him out
of where he is if the diagnosis is wrong
now I’m gonna show you here we’ll start
here I’m gonna give you a little bit of
insight and looking at the process that
we took this guy through to do things
here day one first time we’re gonna work
with him this is gonna be the first day
first time on video you’re gonna see it
what I saw to really see him in action
so now I can take my diagnosis and work
this problem out and see if we can get
this guy to be a good protection dog
your intermediate sleeve which is very
soft and it’s not meant for hard biting
dogs that have good bites already and
they’re experienced because this will be
very painful if a dog already knows how
to bite well and puts power into it so
this is gonna be our starting point he’s
had a year of
work I know he’s only done this and come
off now we got to use something that’s
not to stuff too big so there’s many
things we’re testing here the first time
to see what kind of grip this guy has
and can we settle him into the bytes and
actually get him to start biting well so
since this is my trainer Academy I’m
sitting off with the camera and you’re
gonna see one of the other trainers
that’s in training with me doing the
decoy work with the sleeve on and I’m
explaining to him how he has to move
with this dog and get him out of being
disinterested in protection work how to
flow between prey and defense Drive
which is very tricky you have to be very
good at knowing your drives with dogs in
order to be a very good decoy and pull
dogs out quickly so you’re gonna see the
trainer here remember he’s he’s learning
so you’re gonna hear me guiding him and
this is what was happening here the
first time all right now you move back
and forth right there right because you
got to get his interest keep on moving
keep moving boy and go sideways keep
movin
now Lewis is gonna back him up because
we need room and fund the tree for you
to play right now he does that you spank
stick and you never let him bail out
keep moving right keep making the noise
boy
now crows miss good boy miss why my to
tell Lewis can’t move them I know I know
it’s hard see they let go stay in you’re
gonna have to kiss them now hang in
there don’t shake
don’t shake so there don’t don’t shake
cuz if you shake your putting threaten
you’re going to make him come off let
him get the bite settle ease him through
but we need room here cuz you get a flow
alright you able do it I’m still moving
Frank constant moving back and forth
back and forth back and forth right
sideways make it miss too far away
he’s never gonna engage with that right
now stay in there don’t come out stay on
that line stay on that line stand
aligned right right right too much
moving and now just go sideways walk
sideways now you see when he let go
because you stayed still stays there he
he really does not want to do this no he
does not like this I guess
it’s annoying it’s putting pressure on
him but he needs to be played right when
he gets played right nah no it’s okay
okay yeah because we need to get him off
of you
he needs not be concerned about you okay
he’s a fight for himself right now
though he needs the right stimulation no
so you can see we’re not getting a lot
of power we’re not getting big interest
yeah he came he touched but he’s
touching very lightly he doesn’t really
want to bite he’s not putting energy
into the bites it’s cowardly it’s
fearful it’s lit and he’s letting go and
any little pressure that the decoy puts
of movement he’s out so
this takes a fine touch especially with
a guy who’s not genetically built if you
have a guy who’s easy and genetically
built like most dogs who go through the
police dog things piece of cake they’re
already given you everything and you
just got to have some skill now in this
particular case when you’re dealing with
these kind of dogs you better have some
serious psychology skills and movement
to get this guy to care and to start
having a passion for protection work and
biting so here I’m gonna take over and
I’m gonna show the proper way to deal
with him and get him interested and
start to bite on the sleeves and hold on
and care so this first shot I’m gonna
show you the first one all right here we
get a little something he held on he
shook a little bit perfect for the first
shot and now here the second shot right
away after the first one the objective
is to get him to hold harder hold in
their fight and hang on to that sleeve
and not let go like he always does
that was absolutely personally well he’s
never home like perfect holds on hits me
shoots up good grip hangs in there takes
us leave runs around with it doesn’t
want to let it go first time in his life
that he’s held on and enjoyed the bite
and now he’s hanging on to his reward
that he took from me feeling good and
wanting to hang on to it still getting
more passion and that might hurt let me
tell you that right now that one really
stung then you know right away were on
our way to being able to pull this guy
out and start to create this guy and
build him now since I got that now we’re
gonna have the trainers start to work
with him as well again I’m gonna guide
them and now see if with the right
movements now that we’ve given him
someone some passion for it will he with
the trainer’s do the same thing and hit
the sleeve and hang on and just stay in
there and keep the sleeve the bike there
good boy there now cliffs job good boy
good boy right stay tight stay tight for
good boy there you go good good good
and now that’s good boy Pet pet pet pet
pet rub rub rub rub keep walking keep
walking good he drops it we back him out
good boy
right good and you get ready Frank and
we fit good boy right that’s right go
boy and then we just sit there just
padam padam padam turn him around there
now right the ass watch uh-huh and you
can do without the sleeve piss him off
good boy
Adam Frank Adam the fit right right
right there now pick the sleeve perfect
just what we wanted to see exactly now
he jumps in there good bite good
throwing himself gets the sleeve and you
see the trainer had a hard time when he
was pulling it was because the dog had
so much pressure on the red sleeve he
was trying to yank his arm out but the
pressure was there so he had a hard time
squeezing his arm out there and finally
got it out good good good
and now yeah that’s good boy that’s why
it was taking a while it wasn’t that the
trainer was taking his time trying to
take the sleeve off and give it to him
you just get stuck in there when the dog
gets good power these sleeves are very
soft so there he’s got him crunched he’s
trying to get us on it but the guy has
so much apparently that’s what we want
to see it should be very difficult to
get your arm out of that sleeve that
means he’s committed he’s got power and
now the game is gonna change so since we
had all that now our next move which
changes things as well every step
matters and the dog temperament all
matters to this now we’re going to try
to move him over to a suit jacket big
difference a lot of dogs in the
beginning
can have a problem going from a sleeve
to a suit hang on to it getting the idea
of wanting to bite it unsureness now
you’re gonna see with the suit on and
the stick the pool noodle which is very
soft obviously you see the trainers
starting to come towards him and wanting
to give him a bite and teach him how to
target but the dog doesn’t know the
jacket the pool stick the sari the pool
noodle and the moment the trainer starts
going into the zone thing to try to help
him he starts backing up and he’s not
sure what to do with it because now he’s
got new things the jacket the noodle the
way coming in now we have another issue
we have to deal with and get him through
and this takes skill and this takes time
patience so now we got to build them
into the jacket make him start to like
the bites and not hang on let go and
I’ll let go so I’ve got a change right
right right
so take the step we’re gonna put the
sticker in right there that was it that
was it Herk so I got more biscuit battle
Frank knuckleball air right when he
bites huh gentle don’t go back quick
right right there good boy and stay back
he bites go back and now we’ve passed
that got him to start hanging on to the
jackets here and now he’s gotten so much
confidence you wanna see here the
putting on the extra equipment the
towels
The Mummy
[Music]
because once we got him built this guy
became a serious powerhouse those bytes
when we developed this beginning very
weak bytes just barely hanging on you
don’t know what kind of power this guy
really has boy all right all right see
they let go now that we’ve built him
those bytes are horrendous
I mean you these guys really don’t want
to take bytes from this guy anymore
it is so painful so and within a few
weeks richard hadn’t changed build his
confidence and now not many people would
want to take a bite from him
[Applause]
[Laughter]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
right hold back we’re loading up with
extra equipment everywhere even with the
equipment it still hurts but that’s the
building of what we’ve created not him
naturally just gonna bite hard you can
see in the beginning that little
mouthing and coming off the sleeve quick
with no power no enthusiasm now gear up
this is gonna hurt like a mama man this
guy now I am those bytes are crazy but
there’s a lot that goes in especially if
you’re taking a dog like this that
doesn’t have it naturally you’ve got to
have some mad skills to be able to
diagnose properly exactly work the dog
right with the right louvers to try to
get him out
give him the sleeve exactly right how
much pressure you put on a sleeve
exactly right what movement you have to
do exactly right transferring to other
equipment perfectly he’s fearful how do
we get him out of that little by little
movement to move and playing prayed that
the fence drives object fear I mean
there’s so many things that
when to building a dog like this you
really have to have a complete game of
dog psychology to get a dog that’s like
this that he would have been disregarded
completely by most as he just doesn’t
have it you have to have that diagnosis
perfectly first and then have your
skills good enough to be able to work a
dog through this to gain their
confidence and change them completely
into a different dog so just a little
insight onto what goes on behind the
scenes if you don’t have a dog that’s
genetically just prepped and ready to go
and it’s that easy the dog is really
doing most of it and you’re just kind of
guiding them a little bit big difference
when you’re dealing with a dog who’s not
there and you got to build them so hope
you enjoyed the video until next time
