Is Breeding French Bulldogs Cruel? | This Morning
so bad as he took in four French bulldogs in 2014 three years later it was 29 why the increase that’s right it’s and 30 wouldn’t seem like a huge amount in the scheme of things but given that the Kennel Club think this is going to be the most popular edge to breed next year I think this third is just the tip of the iceberg and I think we’re going to see a lot more likes party here so sir why why why are they bringing them to you to basset they’re so popular why people not not not keeping them it’s a very good question I think a lot of times people buy this sort of breed on impulse I think there all sorts of reasons for that perhaps social media perhaps celebrities that have them just that their friends have them and and their lovely little personalities and their small dog may be ideal for London but I don’t think they sort of think it’s really necessarily and certainly not some of the health issues that come with the breed and perhaps they become a bit overwhelmed by that or they can’t afford the vet bills and then they bring them in to us to look after what sort of health issues well they’re part of a group of dogs called brachycephalic s– which is just a term for this sort of foreshortened this sort of squash muzzle that we see in history but also in pugs and Bulldogs and what what that means is that a few things firstly can you see this sort of skin folds and that we can get infections with those if produced this is sort of bug-eyed kind of enlarged protruding eye that again people find really attractive that can cause problems but for me the overwhelming issue is is the breathing and because they often have these constricted nostrils and the bones behind those in the nasal passages are convoluted their soft palates over long and thickened and they’re trickier the actual airway is often narrow than it should be and so this this multiple levels of obstruction that means that air really can’t get into the lungs so well and I think a lot of owners will recognize this in the breeders either snoring or spluttering or difficulties exercise or struggling in hot weather all those sort of things hi Sean thank you for joining us that’s what he has to say breeders sue twirl is here she says she wouldn’t be without her fantastic Frenchie spurts leading fete Emma Milne says the breach should be banned in Britain for good welcome to both of you so sue thank you for bringing bring the dogs along why why these why these dogs why why are they your pets why they’re your babies what’s so special about I just think they are fantastic dogs their companion dogs I’ve got six at home if I leave the room six dogs come with me yeah they are fantastic character is fantastic if you had huge vet bills have you had problems with their breathing I mean you can hear pinky eight you can hear anything bit excited okay yeah the other two there’s no sounds they’ve doubled up from Norfolk on the train they’ve not been on a train before yeah if stepped in hotel they’re here this morning well you are you’re obsessed with with them you you absolutely love them you’re the trustee for the French Bulldog Welfare Trust first one you had 12 years ago as you say you’ve got six now and so you say this is cruel yes I think there’s a massive massive number of vets and Veterinary Specialists diploma holding the world wide specialists who are very very very concerned about this and it’s difficult for us because we are left picking up the pieces and one of the things that’s quite frustrating and sad is that studies show that about 60% of owners don’t recognize the breathing problems in their dogs because it’s seen as normal pinky being excited a normal dog doesn’t make that noise when they’re excited and these dogs are making a noise they do parents but they don’t make a snorting noise not making a foot both of these dogs are you can hear their breathing through their nose because they’ve got really stenotic nostril eyes you think it’s really banned well I can hear it yes now banning is it’s fraught with difficulty because breed specific legislation like the Dangerous Dogs Act act is a nightmare but for me I think we are breeding animals that are basically born to suffer and some of the the most recent the leading research health proper good institutions scientific evidence shows that between 50 and 70 percent of these dogs are clinically affected wouldn’t you notice that in their behavior I mean they all seem quite content they do but there’s some some people feel that of the reason no one’s disputing the fact that French bulldogs are lovely sweet natured dogs no one’s saying we need to exterminate them all we’re saying is that if we carry on breeding them you’ve got dogs who are having to have reproduce or just to be able to live bred to suffer bred to suffer my dogs aren’t suffering here today what do you what do you say when you hear that they should be banned they shouldn’t be banned how can you ban a breed are you gonna ban Bulldogs and poke yes you are yeah a hundred years ago was there a veterinary paper on brachycephalic issues a hundred years and they have got worse and worse and worse if you look back at skull shapes of Bulldogs converge on boas Rack is the phallic obstruct the airway syndrome nothing conclusive after a fire started Bo I study at Cambridge showed that less than 10 percent of pugs are great naught for Boas which is what every single normal dog is that’s just statistics but you’re the one that quote did your study saying they’ve studied it for five years and they still in her very truth they have they don’t that’s about 50 percent mine heart in the study and what grade were they zero really yes I’d be very shocked at that because they make respiratory noise well at the moment we’ve got to leave it there we’ll let you to carry on and just about but say you know if you are gonna get one of these dogs then know that it could eventually end up being expensive there could be there’s a lot of you bet there is a lot of breeders who shouldn’t be breeding their breeding for money the breeding for color these dogs have been around for a hundred years there’s no new color they’re fads it’s a marketing scam so get those readers we do go to a rectal reader thank you both they shouldn’t be registering than the main body should not be registering we had a stop there but thank you very much indeed you
