Prince George’s County (Maryland) Canine Unit Demonstration
I really like the program that Prince
George’s County has developed a little
quick obedience obedience to me is
pretty much it goes into a whole other
level
he can play but that’s is being that’s
his main come across on both sides and
let you speak it’ll be a little slower
than usual
that’s our field position that’s pretty
much where we’ll be in a lot of times we
have something going on with the footing
so he doesn’t want to really dig in on
the slick surface sometimes we have to
ground let you guys
sometimes we use that little more side
where if it’s quiet and and I have to
you know get to be new
it’s totally silence and then I wouldn’t
we went to the police and fire world
games up in New York
last year and there are some things that
they did if you don’t don’t really do
and so I had to do some training with
one was I had to call back to my humans
issues without using any words so I just
didn’t
the other thing we’ll do is he knows
there’s a toy in my back pocket so
that’s why he keeps looking like that I
was gonna say that for a second
you can make him barf up to man it’s
kind of nice when we have some suspects
usually if there is somebody out there
he’ll know and sometimes he knows it
before me a lot of what these guys do is
take people of your energy so they know
if you’re having a bad day they know if
you’re nervous they know if you’re going
into a situation that they’ll don’t
think it’s sense what what your body is
saying so he’ll feel usually get pretty
excited which star market before any one
of his favorite toys we do a lot of
training in this it’s just a tough way
to shoot with some foam in there but he
loved the one thing we do is let’s say I
sent him to go fight some up there’s two
ways I could do it one would be I can
call him back to me just by saying he’ll
like I’m in it you see him start shaking
right there
you dog scared officer will say that I
said cuz we’re getting ready to go in a
building or something that’s a little
bit of the Belgian Malinois
they get so excited they start shaking
knows he’s going to get something good
so fill shade but if I sent him on a
suspect
and I didn’t want him to bite him but I
wanted him to go up because I didn’t
know if the guy was armed or if he was
gonna flee or what he was good too but
at the last second I thought well he’s
good he’s not gonna do anything he’s
given up his hands are up right now I
can give him command and he will stop
it’s a bad guy he’ll actually rap on to
its plan call it the brat and only some
dogs to do but he loves this this is his
favorite or usually when you pull them
up into your body like that he will
usually what we tell them to this
command where he’s going to stay for the
suspect the suspect in law
he’ll do this all day I mean he will not
give up people do it all that this tongs
will be down the floor
that’s what we call recall right there
so it’s no different than instead of
having a bar oh my god
instead of going to get that guy right
there I tell them you feel me comes
right back to here so that’s that’s our
main that’s our arm that’s our friend
month because let’s say I send him on a
bike if I sent him to go after hand of
Annika and I’m in a school yard or
summit Park and he’s running across
apart let’s say kid runs in front and
takes off what happens is they’ll
destroy it did a lot of these dogs run
on what’s called crane drivers the
simplest way to explain
it’s how they survive in life anything
that’s a prey a rat and something that
way they get the food is running it
catches their eye
so if I send them on a bad guy
somebody’s running and it catches his
eye and he goes after that person I need
to be able to be 100% sure if I can call
him back to me or put him in and down or
something like that where he can stop it
so you know it’s important for us to
have that because things happen in the
real world and he’s really good at that
and he’ll sit there watch that forever
you’ll see his ears kind of come back
like he’s waiting for me to tell me to
get but he’ll sit there forever
I could either call him back to me or I
could let him go to see every challenge
you
we got TVs didn’t drive and he just kind
of lost his mind a little bit and he was
like and he gets crazy about the toy so
as you can see he so he just lost his
mind for a minute he hit him really
quick and then he let go it’s not like
when he’s got it he’s got a suspect or
something
who determines if we bring the dog we
use it we have a separate set of
sov standard operating procedures that
became
and has established when we went through
a little bit of trouble there
they really refined those operating
procedures and make them very clear we
can use it all we can’t use the dog
patrol officers they know pretty much
about the tenant can use the dog for now
a lot of times they will call us and I
don’t mind I don’t mind going out there
and just looking at the situation myself
and saying
you know we just can’t use go over here
to this you choose and first we try to
make sure that they’re mature they
understand the job they’re not going to
do anything crazy with the doll because
there are times where you use the dog
like you’re like that you just have you
have to be really really careful so
basically our SOPs they they govern and
really in a lot of times the sergeants
that are on the road the supervisors you
know they may say hey that’s appalling
and I mean some guys makes it can I call
you and run this by you what you think
and then that we do that too but mainly
those SOPs govern do you use uniform
signals but signals is given yes yes
mostly and really all we use are those
green we’re just knits and then down
comes to the heel that’s pretty much it
you don’t get too crazy with it he’s
actually really interesting because I
when I work with the SWAT team the SWAT
guys can actually give him a command and
he’ll do a couple times so look at him
to be like but he will eventually do and
not a lot of our dogs are like that they
know your voice inflections they know
you so they listen but he’ll actually do
it with other people talent to do it you
probably could do it one guy was with me
and he just picked my dog up and started
walking in the heel he did a whole
obedience routine with him and he said
hey if you ever get hurt I’ll take your
dog because he’s good he did the whole
thing with him no prob so he’s he said
he’s not the universal so pretty clean I
don’t feed him a lot of time so he gets
go back carry some weight and that will
help him in his years you know as it
gets older
pretty lenient but I’m hoping to work in
till about 10:00
I’m hoping we just retired a few dogs
and they were 9 and 10 years old they
get a little slower you know just like
all of us they can’t do all the agility
that this guy can do but they can work
upwards of 10 years then they retire and
the bad thing about us is they’ve been
our partner they’ve been so good to us
we take on every expense that happens
with it so that’s a little tough for us
and we’re trying to work something out
maybe with some companies or something
that could help us out of that but then
they just become a pet at home they’re
your dog at home and usually the guys
that retire dogs that have a little bit
still in them they’re like when I’m
going to work I want to go to work they
they did confuse we’ve said they’ve done
for so long they want to go back Alan oh
did you still want to go outside and go
surfing if you want do you guys want to
see an article search is up to you
you know before we’re outside this next
month’s we’re gonna head DNR come out
our form around Colonel Gary Cunningham
who’s gonna come back to mention one
that’s won’t be the first Thursday
they do when they do something like this
that a lot of people don’t understand
him when he’s looking for stuff like
this or inside there his his nose is
going from 110 miles an hour it’s called
increased sniffing so think about us if
we would be walking oh he thought so it
makes him tired
so when he’s looking for an article or
or somebody to go a mile so that’s
pretty much our demonstration thank you
to district 6 the top unit here officer
Everett and thank you guys for coming
you
