Rhodesian Ridgeback and Labrador Retriever | Dog Training Adventure!
okay we’re over on the farm and this is
my friend Christine and say hello
Christine
so Christine’s trying to learn to
whistle right because you say I see me
whistling in my videos all the time and
I like that like they say in the movies
you know all there is to whistling is
put your lips together and blow
and we thought Christine was a prime
candidate for that but she’s having a
little trouble so okay so like here’s
how you whistles kind of supposed to
sound like upbeat and happy you know
like that so that’s not bad but we’re
going to walk around the farm there
combine and some corn and load some corn
and stuff and we might walk up to the
hem field because they’re also
harvesting hemp and we’re just going to
let these dogs run around play we’ve got
a Rhodesian Ridgeback with us we got my
dog mr. no-name we got Christine’s dog
come on Bentley Bentley you guys have
seen Bentley in a couple of videos and
we’re just doing environmental
socialization and we’re gonna do a
little mom training okay and then too so
hopefully by the end of this video
Christine will be a top notch dog walker
trainer slash Explorer you have any
questions no not much in the way of
questions right now you’re on task to
keep up with this rich back so yeah rich
back has a long line on it if it takes
off running I want you to take off
running and get it okay guys we’re
probably pretty good up through here but
we might you know could jump up a deer
whenever they’re calm binding and stuff
that kind of gets all the critters that
kind of gets all the critters fired up
you know and they get to darting and
moving around so we’ll walk up here
where last week you guys could see there
was a you know standing corn everywhere
and there were soybeans over here but
the soybeans had turned brown
we’ll go up here and show you what
soybean looks like field looks like
after it’s been combine now Christine
did you watch my video where I talked
about crop rotation okay so what they do
is so they’ll plant to like say corn
over here in this side of the field and
then they’ll plan to legumes like
alfalfa or soybeans over in that side of
the field and
legumes put nitrogen into the soil which
is good for the corn but the corn just
takes the nitrogen out of the soil and
so if you don’t want to have to put too
much in a way of petroleum-based
fertilizer down then you just do what’s
called a crop rotation it’s really cool
now while we’re walking every so often
go ahead and call your dog to you and
make over and when it comes back with
with well you can call it in practice
calling them different ways right you
can come with your mouth just hey
Bentley come on you can whistle with
your mouth or you can whistle with your
whistle and remember the whistles
basically we got a conversational
whistle or we say hey we’d like for you
to come back and nice you know kind of
low tone that’s what you use around your
you know your neighborhood you want to
bother everybody and then we have kind
of a you know a real serious whistle or
an emergency whistle
like that right and so you have kind of
one strong it’s just like she’s like
sports or traffic cops right one hard
strong blast stop come back and this
right here that’s kind of a weird thing
but like people how many people do you
know that eat soy beans all the time
heat corn all the time use lotion that’s
made with swimming byproducts right how
many people do you know they ever been
in a soybean field or a corn field even
you know and that’s one of the things we
really try to stress on my channel is
you know get out there are adventures
everywhere right there in Louisville
where you live there’s a lot of
interesting things like this they go on
that if you want to take your son and
show him somebody like the guys that own
this farm they would be glad to show you
around you know that’s the one thing
with farmers is I think they’re very
they’re super underappreciated and they
would like to share what they know they
just don’t always get a chance people
really throw farmers under the bus a lot
they just take them for granted it’s
like you know a kid that has a super
good mom he just thinks his mom’s always
there now we go ahead and take this
leash off of this guy oh and I feel like
I can take this leash off this Ridge
back and that’s always a judgment call
you know but like if you look around
here right now I don’t see anything he’s
going to really draw these dogs
attention there’s nothing
surely dangerous the guys that are doing
the harvesting are all on lunch break so
the machinery is not up and started so I
feel like I can give these guys a little
bit of extra freedom if you find
yourself in a position where you’re not
in charge of the variables or the doll
could you know real suddenly get
themselves in a dangerous situation then
I keep the long line on them now
whenever you walk past say like it’s
like this little thing here like you
might even have just a park up there in
Louisville or something and you ever you
have a brush pile like this like what
you guys think about that that’s like an
apartment complex for wildlife right and
so it’s very easy for your dog like say
you’re walking down through there it’s
very easy for your dog to get sucked
over here into this right and so like
we’re coming down through the field not
much going on – it’s an empty field
right now it’s just been harvested so
there’s nothing out there all the things
that lived over there at least some
level probably came over here and holed
up in this apartment complex right and
so you got to be ready for your dog –
all of a sudden get over here and look
in the brush you know what I mean they
can kick up rabbits or deer or fox or
coyote just any number of things so
again that gets back to like putting
yourself in a position to win you know
if you’re not fast if you don’t have
good vocal control over your dog then
put them on a long line when you get in
those situations where they could be
sucked into a dangerous place and then
right there if you go ahead as they come
close to you they can either turn
sideways and take off walking or walkush
walking backwards you you encourage them
to come all the way to you
now a lot of times what we do but if
we’re making this route we’ll come over
here to this pond and in the summertime
you wouldn’t believe how many frogs her
in that pond and dogs just go crazy I
see I’ve kind of lost that Ridge back up
there a little bit I’m gonna whistle for
he’s chewing on something she shouldn’t
be chewing on but she came so I
appreciate that I’ll give her a little
treat and if she starts giving me a hard
time about picking too much stuff up off
the ground that’s again it’s one of
those things you just have to balance
out like if you if you try to get them
to never put anything in their mouth
you’re losing right yeah so he kind of
tried to regulate it and kind of it
really you just got to kind of let them
live and learn you know they’re gonna
put things in their mouth and it’s not
going to feel good and then they learn
not to put that in their mouth and
you’ll see that like in the summer time
a lot of times you’ll see them pick up a
toad you ever seen a dog pick up a toad
oh they’ll start foaming at the mouth
and shaking their mouth and but they
only do it once you know twice for a
hard-headed one around here a lot of
things will happen in the same way but
we like to let these guys right now
we’re going off into this Hempfield come
on Bentley and I don’t know who all’s
over here so we’re gonna put the dogs
back on the leash for a second
come on Billy don’t put this one on the
leash first cuz that leash is tied to
the long line oh yeah go ahead and put
your dog on a leash
and our fep four perfect puppy get your
stop right up there under there here
okay now you can just kind of let drag
that leash and I don’t anticipate him
going too far but we just want to you
know just it’s better to be safe than
sorry you know and so as we walk up
through here I’m gonna like start to
feed this long line out because I just
don’t have these rhodesian Ridgebacks
they’re not quite as responsive as the
retrievers so I had to just be a little
bit more careful this one’s pretty
biddable though she doesn’t really give
me a hard time but in the dog business
just as just as soon as you think
something’s not going to happen that’s
what it always happens right so you got
to be careful alright so yes for sure
and so he kind of split that up we’re
about half the time you good boy I
appreciate it half the time you know a
little treat and I appreciate it I come
over here and let’s show them what a
hemp plant looks like now you guys can
probably see the dust behind me and you
probably hear all that noise that’s a
combine running over there harvesting
soybeans now this is a hemp plant and
this is a hemp flour okay now some of
you might you know be familiar with
something that looks like this and you
just call them buds okay but in the
industry they’ll call this ahem flower
and this is where all the magic happens
in this simple little flower here is
where the CBD and the terpenes are
produced and this is where your
medication comes from so out of this
whole plant the useful parts for
producing medication or zoom in here
you’ll asset they can see that this
right here see these little flowers
right this right here this is what’s
useful for producing medication so this
variety of hemp is designed to grow a
very specific kind of bud a very
specific kind of flower that’s very rich
in CBD and terpenes right now so that’s
Cooper super neat this other field and
we just got over here a little late we
meant to bring you over here earlier in
the season but the plants were a lot
higher because it was a different strain
a different variety now I’m no expert on
hemp production but there are a lot of
chain
that you can go to go watch and there
they’re really amazing all the different
things that hips good for and I highly
you know I highly recommend you know
research and hip but but not just hip
like like agriculture is one of those
things guys it’s endlessly fascinating
and a little time you know stop watching
all the world star videos and watch a
little much a little bit of us
agricultural videos because there’s no
country ever in the history of the world
been more successful at feeding people
than the United States that’s that’s
just the way it is right now you know
we’re all about environmental
socialization on my channel and so we
got Christine who is from Miami and
she’s never been socialized properly to
sitting on a tractor okay so you’re
going to walk around there and get on
this tractor yeah we’re going to see if
she can get up there you like what do
you think now guys this is an awesome
little tractor it’s a farm all 140 it’s
super cool give them a give them a whole
look around this tractor ela very nice
what do you think you think you could be
a farmer when you were growing up in
Miami did you ever think that you would
see yourself on a tractor I mean did
ever just did ever even come up with
thinking about it no you know but you
see that it’s cool
come on now see look we’ve got ourselves
back over here this this hip field is
empty right now the only piece of
machinery is over there in a soybean
field so we can take these leashes back
off the dogs so go ahead and take your
leash off your dog get you now see look
what he said what he’s done he’s found
himself now this is where you had to be
able to stop him
and look what he found a banana peel of
all things that dog found a banana peel
in a Hempfield which tells you that
somebody is out here eating bananas for
lunch I would just walk across this
field Eli that’s it would be walking
come on here and just ever so often like
you can like run backwards or just take
off running like you’re going to do
something interesting the more
interesting you seem to be the more the
dogs don’t wanna hang out with you right
it’s just like people like you come down
here to hang out with me because I’m
super interesting there you go
very nice now run down this way
there you go good all right now pay some
attention to him and take your attention
away because the one thing about
attention is if I know I can get your
attention whenever I want it your
attention doesn’t mean that much to me
right so the art of positive
reinforcement is in the tease right well
with the pet the petting is a treat it’s
just a different kind of treat generally
the way we break down what we consider
treats is we use padding and praise and
tug and ball works for rewarding active
behaviors like if it requires a lot of a
lot of effort if we want it to happen at
a real fast pace then we get them fired
up you know and if we want a reward you
know like calm stuff that’s where the
food work really shines with young
puppies all right now see how you’ve
kind of lost the dogs look back there a
little bit Eli they’re over there eating
whatever they’re eating okay now I want
you to make yourself interesting because
we’re just talking we’re not that
interesting I want you to call them and
then I want you to run over there to
that tree line whistle and take off run
into that tree line now see that one
dogs ignoring you a little bit use your
other whistle now that’s the difference
guys between retrievers and rhodesian
Ridgebacks hey use your other whistle
that’s now see when you switched
whistles it wasn’t super fast but you
did eventually get her to come that’s
why we carry two whistles now you might
wonder am I disappointed in how quickly
that Ridgeback you know was recalled no
not really because these Ridgebacks you
gotta be real patient with them in terms
of developing a recall that has a lot of
speed and precision but also these dogs
or the ridgeback doesn’t know Christine
very well so she’s not really you know
100% sure Christine is even really
talking to her you’re gonna go over
there into the brush and hide and then
start whistling for me okay so let me
get him come here
oh come here Bedley oh come here you’re
a good dog and you’re a good dog oh
you’re a good dog and you’re a good dog
very nice dogs
oh my gosh oh good dogs
very nice there you go bear yourself up
over in the brush
and so there they go and this is a game
we play over here at the farm all the
time we just come over here and we
practice calling the dogs and then we
make the game more interesting by you
know kind of going off in the lane and
hide in there we’ve got our favorite
little brush spots that we hide in but
and then say and then I’m gonna call the
dogs back okay Christine didn’t come out
here come on come on oh what a good
Ridge back very nice dog come on come on
very nice now see that recall is doing
pretty well now if I just had that Ridge
back out here by herself and I didn’t
have these labs with me that recall be a
lot harder to you know a lot a lot
harder to get to happen reliably yeah
sure well she’s not sure because like
this is she’s going through the process
of environmental socialization she
hasn’t she hasn’t been through the
process let’s see this right here this
is just the kind of stuff that you just
can’t work on like in a building with
all your dogs on a leash at your local
pet co or whatever you know big-box
store that you have you know and so
that’s where your long line comes in so
even though we’re on this big giant farm
like I still have my long line for those
times when we run up on somebody on the
combine on the tractor on the mower you
know so like where you live in
Louisville where you live in Louisville
that’s a great recall reward that for
sure where you live in recall in
Louisville of course you’ll be using
your long line you know probably a you
know a lot more than I’ll be using it
here one of the things we always try to
tell people sometimes we don’t bring
people over here to the farm sometimes
we’ll take them to like just little
spots in town like up by the Dairy Queen
here in town like in that one video I
made about four or five videos back
where I took a family up to the Dairy
Queen and then you know right there in
little wood line you know we took the
dogs exploring in a wood line you know
but in that case like you you know you
have to be like really careful because
if they dash off 40 or 50 yards here
okay
you know eventually you know I’m saying
if they dash off 40 or 50 yards in the
suburbs there are two or three streets
over you know a lot more cars a lot more
distracted moms yelling at their kids in
the backseat you know all right now we
will kind of go over through here now
right here like sometimes this can be
pretty aggravating because dogs will be
hesitant to come through the brush and
so like or or they’ll jump something up
in here and then they’ll take off
running and you kind of need your long
line on but at the same time when they
have a long line on its really really
aggravating because you spend all your
time
you know unhooking it from all the brush
and so what you have to do basically is
you just have to make a decision as to
whether you can safely control your dog
without the long line if you can’t then
like you either have to avoid this much
brush or you have to spend your time on
hooking it from stuff people a lot of
times want to have their cake and they
want to eat it too they like they they
want to have it they want they want to
come out and do environmental
socialization but they don’t want to use
their long line you know well I mean
that’s tough so you either had to make
yourself very interesting like we do you
had to bring a mentor dog like we do or
you have to put the long line on them
and sometimes even us even with the
mentor dogs and everything we still have
to use the long lines otherwise I
wouldn’t have
let’s go over here I’ll show you
something I put this yeah right now see
how we can see like this hole and stuff
this is another thing like you know how
I’m always going on and on about the
dogs need environmental socialization
well one of the things that you run into
when dogs need environmental
socialization if you’re they’re gonna be
the one taking them to do the
environmental socialization you didn’t
grow up like this and so sometimes
especially like during the summertime or
the springtime when everything is very
lush like you might you might just not
even not even think about this because
you walk on the sidewalk you grew up in
Miami so how many times in Miami you’re
walking around there’s just a giant hole
but if you grow up out here then like
look this is what you run into big old
holes
oh you know full of mud and they’re
slippery and I just slipped off in there
you know and you can just see like
sometimes you’ll be out and your dog
will disappear and they’re like here or
you know what else happens a lot of
these trees and stuff around here
they’ve you know that you got animals
that have burrowed up under there and so
you’ll look up and if you’re not paying
attention like your dog has burrowed up
in there and you can’t hear him barking
you know and you panic and you’re like
where’s my dog so like when you go out
if you didn’t grow up in an environment
like this you have to be super aware of
where your dog is all the time and where
you are because you’re not gonna be
doing any dog exercising if you fall
down and get it look at this you see
this if you fall down and net right
there
you know get you you ain’t will be doing
any dog exercising after that oh and if
you want to go out and you know like you
know you’ve got eight year old son he
sees these videos with me he’s gonna be
like mom I want to go do what Stoney was
doing okay you got to realize he you
know he hasn’t grown up doing that and
so the first few times that you take him
out you have to be very careful and kind
of let him gradually get the hang of
negotiating these types of environments
ya know and it dogs love to be outdoors
likes it and I think my husband likes it
so many dogs you get them to go camping
and soften I’ve been camping with my son
and swell
so many dog met what people label as
misbehaviors just simply stem from the
fact that the dogs they don’t have a
proper outlet for their natural
tendencies like the last video I made
about Tom Lee the German Shorthair like
if you have Tommy the German Shorthair
and you get mad at him because he’s
constantly taking his nose and running
off and looking for stuff you’re
literally getting mad at him for being
who he is and that’s not fair from my
perspective I mean other dog trainers
they say whatever but from my
perspective you have to accept things
for you know who they are and help them
be the best version of who they are in
the environment that they live in you
know what that is there’s a pop quiz if
you watch my last video hey Jabba dang I
like that yeah see he’s so ultra over
here Eli show hey these dogs are over
here and they’re eating some deer poop
and some other stuff that might give
them an upset stomach so you might say
Stoney why are you not over their mama
hitting them and keeping them from
making any kind of mistakes it’s just
the world is too big I can’t make the
whole world safe for my kids or my dogs
right I just got to go out and do the
best I can and kind of let them learn a
little bit on their own you know sure
yep you know right yep yep there you go
Oh Pocahontas
Cuban Pocahontas that’s awesome but in
this cool just this little walk down the
down the creek and just with a little
wolf like this and you know I know what
people get tired of me making these same
points in the videos but yes like dog
training is just like sports it really
all just boils down to properly
addressing the fundamentals like you
know what are the fundamentals get the
dogs out get them into a broad range of
environments and look at this just I
mean this we worth looked we’re at a
pond cornfield soybean field hemp field
and now we’re over in a creek where
there’s turkeys and there’s deer and
deer poop and there’s mud and just think
take your hand I know you don’t really
like this but take your hands and feel
this and then feel that dirt
and then reach over here and put your
fingers in this mud here you see I see
like right there in that little two-foot
and that little two-foot section of the
world how wide and varied was your
experience do something like like just
something like this and people literally
don’t understand this but that right
there guys that’s an experience that
like your minds needs to have recovery
some of that mud okay when’s the last
time you had something like that in your
hand
[Laughter]
you see what I’m saying and it yeah is
it gross it is gross I mean I’m not
saying it’s not but it really helps with
the toes to know stimulation that we
always talk about like see my finger
when I when I put my finger in that mud
I feel a certain thing and go with that
feeling goes up my arm all the way to my
brain and now it really connects my
brain and my finger right but what else
does it do connects your nose and your
finger right and connecting your nose
and your finger is very important now so
you got a dirty hand right so watch take
you some of these leaves and go like
that and you will knock the most part of
that mud off of there oh and we do the
same thing till we get over to the pond
like when we the dog getting upon we
always go and throw them throw the
dummies off in the grass to get them to
go chase it and kind of get most of that
mud off of them did you just say ooh
listen here Pocahontas you’re not
allowed to say Oh like you’re gonna on
my on my video like if you’re saying ooh
then you’re going to make environmental
socialization look bad like there are
little drainage ditches all over like
where you live and like you’ll just be
going past them every day because you’re
not thinking about environmental
socialization opportunities and all you
have to do is go for a walk and then
whenever you’re on the sidewalk look
over for a grown-up spot right and
wherever that grown-up spot is it’s
generally some kind of little ditch and
within that ditch is a wide variety of
plants and animals and insects and stuff
and you can have a big puppy-sized
adventure right there in your
neighborhood and people just don’t think
about it because everybody wanted who
always wants to go away from home to go
on an adventure you know I mean like
people up here want to go to Florida
like oh I’m going on vacation I’m going
to Florida what do people in Florida –
do they go oh I’m on vacation all the
time no they go I don’t know where do
people in Florida go thank you I don’t
know if they come here but like like
they go someplace because everybody
thinks all the adventures are somewhere
else and that’s not true
the adventures are where you choose to
find them oh then we got another feather
hey no name what are you doing that
feather dude hey she’s gonna be a chief
by the time she gets done with this
adventure oh we got another one nothing
like going adventuring with uncle stoner
okay so you see how these dogs are
closed right now and as we had walked
through that little Creek there like I
would call them and I’m trying to
establish and I’m trying to establish
ranges on my walk because like depending
on what time of year it is and what’s
going on sometimes like when we’re in
this little area there’s a lot of
workers over on that field and sometimes
over on that field so sometimes I might
only have a 20 yard range it’s
acceptable to my right but I’ve got a 90
or a hundred yard range it’s acceptable
on my left and so as we’re walking like
on a day like today where there’s not a
lot of people out I’m just really
ultimately on practicing building my
ability to help them range within an
acceptable distance and so you’ll see me
I’ll call them back and like in my mind
I’m keeping track of where am I having
trouble because you have you know kind
of what are called suck points you have
certain things that suck the dog’s
attention towards you know one area or
another and again getting back to our
amusement park analogy you know maybe
one kid really likes the roller coaster
and the other kid really likes to splash
log ride or whatever you know and like
mom mom take me here and the other ones
like no take me there so when you’re
managing multiple dogs if they’re all
the same age and experience level you
can’t do it because what happens is one
goes that way and one goes that way and
what do you do so that’s why you have to
have
mentor dog and for people that don’t
have mentor dogs that’s where they end
up using the long line or some other
type of tool that gives them a little
bit of extra control off the leash you
know that’s just not mine
that’s just not how I like to do it I
like to get out here and really just let
them learn through experience and
exposure and following the other dogs
around that’s why I have so many dogs at
my kennel and the neat thing about it
like you saw today like there’s dogs
coming to my kennel like that one with
the white face 13 14 15 years old so
they get the broadest possible range of
experiences so my kennel is like a you
know like a Montessori but it’s a
one-room Montessori where everybody’s in
there all the different ages and the
teachers and the people that the
janitors everybody it’s all on the same
page all working together all at
different stages of life and different
developmental stages now I can hear I
can hear like a lot of machinery being
operated right now okay so hey penny
penny penny come on
so I’m not going to put I’m not going to
put myself in a position where like the
dogs are close to the machinery and all
of a sudden I need to catch them and I
can’t so since I hear the machinery I
hear the combine in that field and I
hear the fellas up here on a tractor in
this field so I’m going to go ahead and
stop and put in a little work now by
leashing the dogs up so that I don’t
have to put in a tremendous amount of
work and and potentially fail on keeping
them safe as we walk back down towards
the pond right now but whenever you
think about like you know people talk
about how you know life is rough right
now or whatever okay
just think it wasn’t that long ago that
when you went to the potty that’s what
you had to wipe with you know what I
mean just think about that like so
whenever you’re like think life life’s
got you down you know what I’m saying
think you could be instead of reaching
over and they getting some nice fluffy
toilet paper you can be reaching over
into a box full of corn cobs take two
yeah
make him yeah we’ll take a whole bunch
make you take a whole bunch and make him
white for a whole week solid you know
and and and like people are so spoiled
nowadays
they have no appreciation what the
founders of the country went through
what the settlers went through you know
or what like people from Cuba what they
went through when Castro took over you
know and that lack of appreciation that
lack of understanding that lack of
historical knowledge is undermining the
whole fabric of the Republic let me
think about this you’ve heard a lot of
people complain about whatever their
situation is in life how many of them
had to wipe their behind with a corncob
none so how bad did they really have it
they didn’t really have it that bad did
they no now I see a little bit more
distance on you might switch to your
bigger whistle now good make over them
and don’t stare at them you know just be
like hey come on back micromanage of
good look how good they run oh good I
appreciate that oh look at this guy he’s
coming buddy I don’t want to look at him
and mean mug him stare at it I’m just
like hey come on up here I knew you
would come you know no big deal then
give him a little little preciate good
and always remember like if you go out
and your strategy is I have a treat here
don’t run in the road the treats not
that much fun it’s not better than the
squirrel it’s not better than the girls
the treat is just a physical
manifestation of your pleasure which you
know that whole pattern is built doing
your yard work at home you know like
your fieldwork where you come out here
you go adventurin this is the test butts
all the little stuff you do during the
week that makes this that makes the dogs
able to pass this test today what you’ll
notice is that I’ve got my jon boat out
instead of my kayak now normally what we
do is we just get the dogs used to being
in the kayak and then we take the kayak
down to the lake or the river over here
to the pond and we go straight from you
know kayak time at the kennel to kayak
time on the water well we’re trying to
teach this Ridgeback to be good in the
boat and good on the kayak and she’s
having a little harder time with it so
we need an introductory bridge so we
introduced sitting on the kayak at the
kennel and we put in the water and
everything but over here like to get her
used to going into the pond and kind of
the overall motion of the boat we
decided to use a little bit bigger a
little
bigger boat so it would be easier for
and so I put on my waders today because
I’ve got company and I don’t want to
have you know muddy feet now I drag this
over here and they will let Christine
get in here with this dog everybody will
be happy
Christine’s little dog Bentley can get
in Christine can get in oh yeah awesome
little adventure all right now I
remember what I said about no whining
okay you’re fixing to get muddy possibly
wet okay
just get a name sir
very nice well listen I did almost get
Christine super wet because I forgot to
put the drain plug in the boat so I had
to drag them how real quick all right
we’ll try this again all right grab that
dog put it in there in there really okay
all right all right come on over here
and getting this boat you can set to get
in there come back here and you sit down
like a queen that you are huh nothing
like coming to uncle’s don’t need to get
serviced oh very nice
all right perfect
now so see what happened right there
where your dog got out like some dogs
get out because they’re nervous you know
I’m saying he got out just because like
he want to go do something else
so we’ll put him back in here in a
second I’m just gonna kind of those
gonna kind of move him around
Oh now if you want to bring him in over
the over the side what you do is you
should grab him by the collar and
they’ll kind of get in there very nice
it’s not bad as any lie that Ridge bag
doesn’t seem nervous it’s awesome that’s
a big improvement
now sometimes like right up here by the
bank they’ll be cool with it you know
and then as they get a little bit
farther out it makes them nervous and
sometimes they’ll jump out and there’s
plenty of precautions you can take about
that like you know like always if you
work on stuff in the yard before you
come work on it in real life
it’s kind of easy
so what we do is when we’re doing real
life we’re kind of doing fake real life
like this is real life I mean you’re
really in a boat and I’m really in the
pond they’re really in the boat but like
if they get wet if they get muddy if
they knock us over here it’s not like
it’s a big family event or a vacation so
it’s not not a big deal right
okay so that’s what we’re doing just
moving around here in a second I’m going
to I’m going to push you out into the
pond and you have to paddle your way
back there you go perfect very nice
there you go
good work
that’s pretty good
she put him in the truck she don’t want
to lose him out here in the bond
now don’t stress too much about what
they’re doing you know you can really
focus on is driving the boat
you know they jump out we’ll get them
we’ll put them back in the boat but our
main focus is we don’t want you to fall
out of the boat
you know all right so here we’re gonna
go I’m gonna push you back
very nice very nice
you see see the dog’s attention see how
much is attention is drawn over here to
the people right
hey and those people they probably like
dogs right and so they’re probably
looking at these dogs interested you
know they’re like looking at them going
oh that’s cool I wonder what underwear
Stoney’s doing over there in the pond oh
look at that pretty dog and when the dog
sees the people look at it then they go
oh you must want me to come hang out
right and the dog doesn’t have the
capacity to understand that between it
and the person is machinery that’s
potentially very dangerous this is only
ten minutes from my kennel
you know guys there are adventures 10
minutes from your house they’re probably
adventures five minutes from your house
because going on adventures is really
just a matter of perspective
we’ve come over here today and in one
one hour walk we’ve been exposed to
almost just infinitely varied amount of
environmental stimulation right we’ve
got crazy smells and sounds like right
now what you hear is a semi loaded down
with soybeans trying to pull itself up a
hill right you know you know those
things are around you you know you might
not have a combines around you but
you’ve got something they’re building
something they’re working on a road
there are places everywhere to go on
adventures and it’s just a matter of
getting your mind right and making sure
that you take the proper safety
precautions and then going out and being
inventive after coming over to this farm
you don’t have access to a farm like
this right okay but considering what
I’ve told you about the principles of
small challenges of puppy-sized
adventures don’t you feel like you can
go home and right there in downtown
Louisville find some adventures of
course because it’s a mindset it’s a way
of living you know you just get up every
day and you say hey how can I be
proactive how can I get out and improve
my ability to communicate what’s
expected to my dog how can I get out and
improve my own perception of my
environment how can I get out and get
enough nose to toes to know stimulation
that my dog develops good proprioception
and you know what’s the byproduct of
that don’t you
feel good that you’ve been for a walk
right your lymphatic systems working
you’re happy you’ve seen a lot of
animals you’ve seen some machinery that
you’ve never seen we toda Christine she
didn’t know cuz she’s from Miami you
know she didn’t know that people used to
use corn cobs like they used toilet
paper now
I mean she’s learned all kinds of stuff
today she got to get in a boat with a
Rhodesian Ridgeback I mean how many
people in the world ever get to get in a
boat with a Rhodesian Ridgeback I mean
this is a it’s been a great day a great
experience and it’s not just about
coming over here to the farm it’s about
who you come to the farm with right
we’re usually over here with labs and
other sporting breeds today we brought a
Rhodesian Ridgeback it’s a little bit
different experience for that type of
dog and it’s a little bit different
experience managing that type of dog
we bought brought Christine she’s from
Miami you know I don’t think they grow
corn in Miami I mean I never been there
but I watched Miami Vice before I didn’t
see any corn fields or heights so like
me and Eli are used to this you know the
guy driving that combine is used to this
guy driving the semis used to those men
over there
processing the hemp that we were talking
to they’re used to it but for Christine
to watch Christine right interact with
the environment to watch or touch things
and feel things and smell things I found
that very rewarding myself so it made
the adventure that much better
guys the adventure is not about the
location the adventure is about the
mindset so get your mindset right and go
out in the world today this afternoon
and have you and your dog a puppy sized
adventure
