riding the bus as an autistic person (ft.service dog)
hey guys it’s fine and welcome back to
my channel I wanted to share with you
some tips for taking the go train slash
go bus one number one is important the
first time I sorry
Edison over there the first time I took
the go bus I wrote a note for the bus
driver ID explaining hi I’m fine I have
autism this is my first time taking the
bus by myself would you please make sure
I get off at the right stop and I wrote
this stop but having a little card ready
to give to the driver that says that
explains who you are and your disability
it can really help them help you and be
more accommodating also if you do have a
service dog like I do it’s important for
you to sit in the accessibility seats
and if the accessibility seats are full
of people who may not necessarily need
them you can tell the bus driver that
you need an accessibility seat and they
will move people out of it to make room
for you and your dog or wheelchair a
walker or whatever and you might have
the next one because buses and trains
can be yes hi Eddie
it can be kind of sensory hell I would
recommend bringing a few sensory objects
this is my current favorite that I have
brought with me I also have my chewable
mushroom pendant those are the two that
I have with me all the time but I also
have a and it’s this hi
she really likes my stem toys and tries
to get at them
sometimes but another very important
thing because buses and trains can be
loud I always bring a pair of either
earbuds or headphones so you know it’s
also important don’t feel ashamed of any
mobility aid you may need or any
accommodations you may need for me it’s
bringing my cane on the on the bus
because like the buses can be kind of
shaky and if I need to stand up for any
reason the cane is a big big assistance
to me lastly well it’s not lastly but
don’t fall asleep that’s how you miss
your stop when you fall asleep on the
bus I know it can be hard especially if
you’re taking the bus in the early in
the morning but you know listen to music
play a game on your phone read a book
just so you’re aware of what’s going on
at all times um that’s pretty much it
for riding the bus or train as an
autistic person oh wait nevermind um I
have this thing called a presto card so
when I’m on the bus I don’t have to deal
with money or buying a ticket I don’t
know if other countries or regions do
something like this but a presto card is
basically you load money onto it and you
can just tap it when you get on the bus
on and off the bus so you don’t have to
do anything hot okay you’re just gonna
settle right here
[Laughter]
so the presto card is kind of helpful to
it just it takes one stressor off your
plate especially if you’re taking the
bus for the first or the train for the
first time um it can be scary and
stressful also make sure you have a
contact person like for me it was my my
mom so if I needed any help dealing with
anxiety or anything on the bus I could
text her and she could you tell your
support person hey I’m taking the bus I
might need some help and that will
definitely help if it’s gonna be a long
ride bring snacks and a drink that’s
kind of a given but you know now I think
that’s it that’s all the tips I’ve got
for riding the bus is an autistic or a
disabled person um so I’ll see you in
the next video bye
