Should I use Positive or Negative Dog Training? Positive Punishment?

hello everybody and welcome back to the
coolest dog training channel right here
on YouTube
I’m Tom Davis America’s canine educator
I am simply putting a life-saving video
together that means the world to me as
dog populations skyrocket across the
world the lack of education is literally
staying the same and those two things
will not be good for the dog this video
means so much to me this video isn’t to
persuade you this video isn’t to take
you from one side to the other it has no
meaning behind the politics of the dog
training this is simply to educate
everybody on planet earth working with
dogs what we’re doing why we’re doing it
how we should be doing it do we really
understand the four quadrants of how
dogs operate and how they learn and how
they don’t learn this is a very simple
video that is literally going to be
life-changing and will and can be the
difference between life or death and
many dogs the shelter’s are getting
bigger the rescue organizations are
getting more dog training companies are
popping up and guess what else is
following the marketers business people
they’re seeing this growth in dogs
they’re seeing the growth and dog
ownership and they’re chasing it and
they’re investing and they’re
manipulating a lot of the marketing and
a lot of the way you perceive dog
training in your mind a lot of it is
bogus a lot of it is there going to be
false information it’s going to be
ignorant it’s going to persuade you to
one side and it’s going to convince you
that the other side is bad only to take
your money
so why anybody working with dogs being
around dogs loving dogs you need to
understand you need to know the reality
of how things work the difference is
between what this word means and what
this word means the four quadrants of
how dogs operate and and how they learn
and how they understand thing we have
such a passion and compassion in helping
dogs and we love them but we can’t let
emotion sink in we need to do more to
educate ourselves about
how these guys actually operate their
animals we need to understand that this
video literally will and can save lives
I hope you like it
okay you’ve come this far the four
quadrants of dog training it’s going to
be positive reinforcement negative
reinforcement positive punishment and
negative punishment now as I’m in this
karate power stance you’re probably
thinking positive means yay treats
happiness teddy bears mmm cool and
negative means punishment alpha bad
angry big guy show guy violence pain
torture ah I can go all day well you’re
wrong that’s not right at all when we
talk about positive and negative it
simply means adding something
subtracting something the definition of
positive reinforcement is the first
thing we’re going to talk about which is
on the screen next
positive reinforcement for humans is
very simple I’m gonna play roleplay
really quick hey Tom if you pick up that
chair and bring it over there I’ll give
you some money okay good job tom
here’s your money Thanks positive
reinforcement is adding value to ensure
that if I ask that person to go do that
thing with the chair again they’re gonna
want to do it Dawg positive
reinforcement is very simple Kota touch
good sit good like now you can add
positive reinforcement verbally good
leash pressure good
you can add positive reinforcement many
different ways just a verbal just food
you could use a leash you could use so
many different things
positive reinforcement doesn’t always
have to be food and treats and all these
things it just means that you’re adding
something that the dog likes yay to
encourage them to do it again it’s very
simple
next up negative reinforcement
definition to follow
negative reinforcement is in by no way
punishment has nothing to do with
anything bad of what normal people would
think it does negative punishment is
very simple in human terms it’s when
your mom goes hey do the dishes do the
dishes do the dishes do the dishes
negative reinforcement would be like
okay fine I’ll do it that’s negative
reinforcement in dog terms very simple
so negative reinforcement for dogs is
extremely simple I’m basically going to
add something that the dog doesn’t
necessarily like and when they do it it
shuts off so when I want the dog to go
here I’m just going to use the leash
when they get there police shut Kok if I
want the dog to go over here I’m gonna
use the leash the leash shuts off very
simple case of negative reinforcement
the third quadrant would be positive
punishment the definition follows
now positive punishment is something
that we think about on a regular basis
human form of positive punishment would
be adding in maybe a cop at the end of
the road next to a school
meaning if you see the cop and you get
pulled over the chances of you doing
that again are gonna be very small
because you got a ticket you got to find
you had to pay a bunch of money whatever
so it’s literally adding in some sort of
punishment for the behavior you don’t
want now I think the big thing that gets
people confused here is you don’t have
to be cruel and inhumane to punish a dog
so I think the idea of punishing dogs is
a little confusing for people you just
assume that it’s all these negative
things it’s not you’re just doing
something that causes the dog to be
uncomfortable when they do it and when I
train I really want to teach a dog not
to run out in the road not to jump on
elderly not to bite people not to pull
on the leash all these things so by
correcting a dog or adding punishment
you’re teaching the dog that mmm those
things we don’t necessarily like and so
I’ll show you exactly how that works
right now it’s not that scary the dog
form a positive punishment is very
simple I’m going to add some sort of
punishment to the dog when they do a
behavior I never want to happen again
such as jumping I have food if the job
off I correct the dog using leash
pressure last but certainly not least
negative punishment so again think about
it like a math equation I’m taking
something out to punish whatever I’m in
charge of so if your kid yells and
screams and spits on the principal you
take their iphone away you’re taking
something away to punish them for that
so very simple in dog form I’ll show you
negative punishment is just as simple
I’m gonna remove or take away with the
dog wants to punish them for doing a
behavior I don’t want to happen again so
that’s negative punishment she jumps I
removed the food and the ball so she
can’t see it a lot of times negative
punishment is used for adolescent dogs
to teach them what we like and what we
don’t like I love dogs and I know that
you do too and it’s really important
that we educate ourselves on how they
learn and how they operate
now with Bea and what I do I travel all
over the world working with dogs and I
specifically work on behavior and I can
tell you that if you create structure
and you give your dog a little bit of
boundaries with a little slip collar and
say hey that’s wrong do this instead
they go oh it is okay so we’re not
ignoring this stuff so just like child
psychology when they’re putting marker
all over your wall or they’re spitting
or they’re kicking the principal we’re
not turning our head
we’re not avoiding we’re not looking the
other way that that would that would be
inhumane to do that with kids you would
actually probably get punished or fined
for that too just like oh my kid cross
the road without looking I’m over here
they would probably take them away and
with dogs there’s this thing going
around that that’s what people do too
they ignore it they don’t do anything to
stop it and they wonder why it continues
to happen so it’s important I’m not
trying to persuade anybody because
there’s no wrong and there’s no right
way of doing everything with dogs it’s
not binary it’s very different on a case
by case some dogs need certain tools
some people need certain tools to handle
the dogs that they have there’s just so
many variables and there’s so many
different ways to get to the end of the
tunnel and I think it’s so so so
important and it literally hurts my
stomach to see some of the marketing
manipulation going on out there of like
purely this only then but I think as the
dog training community grows the
education almost goes down we don’t know
as much as we should when we open up
places and as a dog owner we don’t know
as much as we should when we go out and
we shop for a dog training camp we see
things like purely this
only positive this and in actuality it’s
complete ignorance and it’s absolutely
absurdly wrong it’s not true when people
say that they only do purely positive
reinforcement training it’s a lie it’s a
marketing gimmick it’s not even possible
and to say that nobody else does that I
do a balance dog training method which
means 97% of the time when I dog does
something I give them mmm and I love
them I give them food I give them a ball
I give them everything they want
but just like good parenting I also
believe in giving my dog discipline and
teaching them wrong from right and I
think for the majority of dog owners out
there you interpret discipline and
Punishment as inhumane bloody messes
Spike’s shocking all these crazy
barbaric things that nobody does well
maybe some people do but you gotta
understand that there’s balance and
there’s a right way and a wrong way to
punish a dog and there’s a right way in
a wrong way to do positive reinforcement
you can add more negativity and more
damage using positive reinforcement a
lot of the times because then your dog
gets obese and there’s dependent on food
and is obsessed with food and then
becomes aggressive because of the food
so we just need to understand the way
that our dogs learn and there’s so many
different variables and there’s so many
different hot-and-cold in different
temperaments of how these things operate
that if you’re gonna work with dogs
professionally you need to understand
that there’s certain dogs who have
trouble learning a certain way or you
need to go outside of the box or you
need to become creative to get into
their mind and a lot of these dogs that
you see are the dogs that are troubled
they’ve been abandoned neglected or
abused they’re stuck in a shelter and
one way isn’t gonna work and if we
continue to tell people and to believe
that the only way to work and train with
some of these troubled dogs who have
seen hell and back then those dogs are
going to continue to die we have to
understand that there’s other ways to be
humane to be fair to be educational and
teach dogs in a one-dimensional way and
that goes for both spectrums that’s not
just a ton of positivity turning our
backs when negative things happen it’s
the same thing for people who are old
school that yank and crank and turny
collars up and do a bunch of abusive
stuff that is barbaric that somebody as
myself would never agree with and would
never do and so please if you guys love
your dog and you care about your dog
share this video with as many people as
you can Facebook Twitter wherever it
needs to go because this video can
change somebody’s outlet and change
somebody’s outlook on how they work with
their dog and it could potentially save
that dog’s life if they look somewhere
else for help so thank you guys so much
for watching this video I truly do
appreciate if you’d like it leave a
comment below let me know what you think
