Teach Your Dog How to Leave it
hi my name is jen michaelis and i'm a certified professional dog trainer this is tara and today we're going to show you how to teach your dog leave it to teach this trick you should start out by making your leave it treat be very low value something your dog is not too interested in you can save the extra.
Special really yummy treats like cheese or training treats for the reward when they leave the low value one alone start by holding a treat at the dog's nose level in an open hand if your dog tries to eat the treat hold your hands still but simply close your hand into a fist let your dog lick your hand even though.
It's closed wait for your dog to ignore your hand by looking away from it looking at you or backing away from it reward your dog right away from your other hand good job you'll notice as you play this game that she'll start to ignore your hand quicker and quicker.
When she's really good at this game switch hands by putting your low value treat in your other hand be ready to reward with the high value treat from your right hand when your dog can ignore the treat even though your hand stays open you're ready to add your cue word you can say leave it as you present your open hand be.
Ready to close your hand again if suddenly she gets tempted when your dog can ignore a treat in either hand even though it's open you're ready to start putting the treat on the ground when you start this step your dog might be confused so be ready to cover the treat with your foot and wait for her to look up at you.
When she looks up at you be ready to reward her with that extra special treat again if your dog can ignore the treat without you having to cover it with your foot you're ready to say your q word again leave it say leave it as you put the treat on the ground good job.
Remember that leave it is good practice for all those yucky things you don't want your dog to eat so when you're all done with the exercise pick up that cookie and put it in your pocket good job very good so.
