Teach Your Dog to Walk Backwards – Robert Cabral Dog Training
one thing that’s super fun for people to watch a dog to do is to walk backwards it has a lot of advantages for being a fun trick but it also has really good health benefits for the dog to get their body moving in different ways I love teaching dogs to walk backwards and I’m going to show you how to do that in this video so the first thing Minh does I’m going to show you how it works with goofy Goofy’s already learned it and then I’m gonna change I’m going to show you how to teach it to Duane so you’ll see both sides this is here with a finished dog like goofy you’ll see it with a green dog like Duane so the idea here is goofy here he’s in front of me goofy sits good goofy stay back back back back good Platz he understands walking backwards by two things so the way I teach the dogs way and get him to understand this is through what we call frontal or spatial pressure so goofy here so he’s gonna know if I walk into him he’s gonna walk backwards right if I do this he walks backwards this he walks backwards but I gotta get it on cue so I gotta get it from the body pressure to a hand signal to a Lord behavior because sometimes walking backwards into the dog just pressures them to be too confused and too scared it has to be a fun exercise so you’re goofy come here here okay so I’m gonna start him with a sit I’m gonna move him to a stand stay right and I’m gonna use a hand signal here this way and I’m going to put a verbal command to it see he knows the hand signal back back good now what I want to show you so that he can walk back quite away so from here goofy here good here good back back back back back back back back back back back back back back Platz and that’s pretty impressive right so he knows to walk backwards he doesn’t turn around he kind of goes pretty straight you could probably make him go straighter but for him the most part here is to understand that when he’s in that place I can still control him I can do this goofy state good and he’s gonna understand that I can recall him goofy here right and get him to here good and I can get him to walk backwards here shake back back back back back back back same thing back back back back back back back back go ahead boy yeah good boy here good and there’s a couple components to that I’m going to show you how to do that with a dueña mater it’ll be a lot of fun it’s a fun trick to teach but it’s also very healthy for the dog to understand from a stand that he has to go backwards right back back back back back it builds a lot of muscles like us walking backwards it’s really good it puts your body in different alignment it hits different muscles you might not normally hit and it’s super fun for your dog to learn something different because hey everybody get their dogs to walk forwards get your dog to walk backwards gonna be a lot of fun hang on we’ll go get the dawei no mater good so here we go with teaching Duany how to walk backwards right so again when we first get the dog out the dog super excited it’s really might be a good idea to kick the dog down no no no no we don’t want to do that but we want the dog to come out having fun so understand there’s a time for discipline there’s time for fun this time corrections there’s a time for shaping behavior it’s time for accepting behaviors and there’s a time for not doing that but early on with a puppy just chill out have fun with a puppy let the puppy be a puppy and use your Corrections wisely because if you’re always nagging the dog you’re gonna have an adversary relationship with the dog and it’s not gonna get you anywhere so you saw goofy walking backwards and you saw him doing it without treats but with Dwayne tomater we’re gonna start to shape that behavior and we’re going to do it with treats drop it good so what I’m gonna do is I’m going to get myself a handful of treats here good and Dwayne is obviously very hungry always good to start with a hungry dog a motivated dog and have a handful of treats and what I’m gonna do is get Dwayne to do the biomechanics of walking backwards before I start to teach him what I really want so here I’m going to go I’m gonna have my handful of treats I’m gonna push him push him push them push them and I’m gonna bring him in and I’m gonna give him a treat I’m gonna have a hand actually you know it’s a really good idea to put them in both hands and go to weigh in here it’s between my legs he’s on in front of me here and I’m gonna start putting frontal pressure on and I don’t want him to do that right that’s the normal behavior for a dog you’ve been training because you’re kind of in the same position as teaching the down I don’t want that with the dog so I’m gonna go here Duane and I’m going to change the position to here come on Duane give me back back good good good yes and I’m gonna release him I don’t want to release him back there because that makes it a static movement in other words he’s freezing I want this to be a dynamic and active exercise for him Green here I’m gonna push him back back back back and I keep walking walking walking good boy yeah good boy and then I can start to take a little pressure off back back back back back back back yeah good boy he knows the treats here but he’s not getting in fact he has to go away from the tree to get it right here stand good and back back and I can start to change my hand around like you saw we have goofy doing it is with this hand tapping backwards so if once he sees that this ya go boy is going to get him to walk backwards that starts to form the hand signal right so here I’m gonna get him to stand and I’m gonna push him back back back back he’s doing the movement I’m naming what he’s doing here right so he’s here back back back back back yeah go boy everything is steered from the head of the dog Dwayne here it’s nice and straight back back back back he’s headed straight back back yeah good boy Dwayne back back back look at my hands back back back he’s eating the whole time and yeah and all he’s learning right now is the biomechanics of the movement because that’s the most important thing for him to learn he has to understand what I want him to do before he can do it then I can put obedience on it then I can start to get more into it you’ll see with goofy how perfect his back backpack is walking backwards it looks like he’s moonwalking and that’ll happen it’s exactly the way I taught goofy is the way I’m teaching the do animator he understands because the movement was shaped the movement was rewarded and it was corrected when he didn’t do it wrong remember your angle of your hand when you’re feeding those treats is critical for the dog to understand how to do it okay take your time have fun with your dog just have fun so just enjoy your dog if you don’t can’t get it you’re doing something wrong or the dog is not getting it clearly start back regroup watch the video again just take your time make sure everything you’re teaching the dog is fun it’s not about being adversarial Corrections come way later shape the behaviors have fun with the dog and if you like this video give it a big thumbs up and subscribe to the channel cuz there’s tons more videos where that came from and the Dwain animator wants to thank you for liking all his videos because one of his videos is climbing the charts right now and we hope all of them will take care
