Tips For First Time Dog Owners |Life With Aspen|

since it’s four for Flint hopefully this
thing is gonna work hopefully I have
enough light I don’t know okay so hi
everyone I wanted to put up a video
today about how to prepare to bring home
a puppy and basically something for
first-time dog owners some tips that
might help with bringing a new puppy
home it’s something that’s very new for
both you and your puppy if it’s your
first dog and so these are some tips
that will hopefully help you with
getting through the puppy stage a little
bit better okay so my first tip for
anyone that’s bringing home a new puppy
is to get a blanket for them I think one
of the most frustrating things for
people when they first bring home a
puppy is having to get through those you
know first two three days with the puppy
just crying all the time through the
entire night it can get really
frustrating and it is something that can
be hopefully easily avoided so what I
did with Aspen is I got her a blanket
and what I did is I gave it to the
breeder before we brought her home
probably about the week before we
brought her home and her mom slept with
the blanket for a whole week before we
brought her home so if you do that with
the puppy um and allow the mom to have
exposure to the blanket to get her scent
on the blanket it’s very comforting for
the puppy and their first few days away
scent is a very big thing for dogs and
so if they have the scent of their
mother around them for the first few
days it’s going to help with getting
them accustomed to being away from their
mom it’s something that’s really
comforting for them at night and it’s
hopefully going to help with them
preventing a lot of the crying that you
might have to endure when you get a
puppy for the first time okay so the
second tip that I would have is to
expose your puppy
to as many things as possible as many
situations as possible that would be
normal in their everyday life so for
example if you feel like you’re going to
be consistent with brushing your dog’s
teeth get them started really early get
them exposed to the toothbrush very
early it’s going to make your life so
much easier later on and so I really
encourage people to expose them to
brushing expose them to nail clipping
and Aspen had her nails clipped when she
was eight weeks old so I just kept on
exposing her to certain situations that
I wanted her to be comfortable with and
it really made my life so much easier
expose your puppy to bath time that’s
going to make your life a lot easier
it’s a lot easier to get your dog used
to something when they’re this big
versus when they’re this big you know
what I mean so just really expose them
to grooming expose them to you know the
vacuum cleaner different things in the
house that they normally will be exposed
to and that you don’t want them to have
a fear of or that you want to have some
type of management of them over it can
be really challenging if you don’t
expose your puppy to bathing for example
and then they get to be sixty pounds and
then you’re trying to handle a 60 pound
animal in the tub it’s not very easy so
if you expose your puppy to all of these
situations beforehand and make it a
priority to expose them to these things
then it’s going to make your life so
much easier in the long run so the third
thing that I would suggest and it kind
of goes along with exposing your puppy
to different situations but it has to do
with socialization so you really do want
to make sure that you make it a priority
to get your dog out and interacting with
rent groups of animals or people that
you want them to be comfortable with
so for example with Aspen my dog I made
it a priority to make sure that she was
comfortable with children so she always
would go out and play with money my
neighbor’s kids you want to expose them
to dogs and get them all socialized with
dogs you want to expose them to adults
men older people and also be consistent
with exposing them it’s not just going
to help to do it once it has to be
throughout their life that you’re
exposing them to these different
situations these different social
situations so just be very consistent
with it and that will help you have a
dog that doesn’t have any dog aggression
or that is you know calm around children
things like that so if there are certain
situations that you yourself know your
dog is going to be put into or even
let’s say if you’ve got a dog that
you’re thinking about having children in
the future think about the future and
expose them to those situations in order
to prepare them for future situations so
that would go along with kind of the
exposure thing just expose your dog to
have many things as you possibly can the
more that they see and the more that
they interact the better that’s my
opinion at least so the next tip that I
have goes a little bit against exposure
in the sense that this is more of a tip
for keeping your dog healthy and the
main thing to know is that puppies
should not be going outside on public
sidewalks until at least they’ve got
their second round of vaccinations the
problem is that
with the first vaccine there’s still
maternal antibodies that are circulating
around and so the effectiveness of the
first round of vaccines is not
necessarily 100 percent foolproof so the
the last thing that you want is to bring
a puppy home and then have them exposed
to something like parvo or you know
anything you don’t want your puppy to
get sick right so usually it’s it’s for
the majority safe after your second
round of vaccinations if you want to be
completely safe then you can wait until
all three rounds of vaccines are done
but to let your puppy go out into a dog
park when they’re eight weeks of age is
a little bit risky they don’t have the
the immune system to be able to fight
off certain things that they probably
most definitely will be exposed to in
the environment that’s just my opinion
I’ve seen puppies die of parvo there’s
no way I would ever expose my dog before
she had her vaccinations it’s a horrible
thing to see into to witness so the the
best thing is just to make sure that
their immune system is up to par before
they are exposed to certain things so
just get them their vaccinations and
also keep them in a so
included area for the first few weeks
that you have them until they have at
least their second round of vaccinations
it’s totally fine to let them out in a
backyard that you have access to that
you you basically know which dogs have
been in your backyard random dogs aren’t
going to have access to your backyard
and so it’s fine to let your puppy into
your backyard and into your house but
public sidewalks dog parks things like
that aren’t necessarily the greatest
thing to expose your puppy to at the
very beginning so we’re going to end it
with I guess the fifth thing that I
would suggest and basically it’s kind of
like a human baby with a puppy you want
to start them into a schedule that is
reflective of your everyday life if
you’re used to sleeping until 8:00 a.m.
and going to bed at 10:00 p.m. you want
to get your puppy used to going to the
bathroom before you go to bed and being
able to wait until you get up in the
morning so keeping a consistent schedule
with feeding walking and with you know
their their final access to whatever it
may be the backyard or whatever it may
be for them to relieve themselves you
want to get a consistent schedule going
and it doesn’t have to be like a strict
strict schedule but just a loosely based
schedule so that they kind of know what
to expect
yeah so you want to get a consistent
schedule going with them that’s probably
the easiest thing to do with a dog it’s
kind of very natural to fall back into
your natural
rhythm and then get your dog used to
your natural rhythm but it will be very
helpful with you especially if you’re
going work stuff like that to get them
into this rhythm of knowing what to
expect during certain times of the day
so those would be all of my tips I think
if anyone else that is watching has any
further tips for people you can always
leave it in the comments down below I’m
sure that everyone appreciates hearing
other people’s opinions and other
people’s tips as well and thanks so much
for watching you guys take care bye
