Top 10 DOBERMAN Facts!
welcome to today’s episode of the canine
show and today I’m breaking down the top
10 facts about one of my favorite breeds
on the planet
the Doberman Pinscher who is currently
battling it out in our last dog standing
tournament to try and be crowned the
ultimate guard dog breed so if you’re
new here make sure you subscribe and go
and check out our head-to-head 5 round
battles but without further ado let’s
get straight into our top 10 starting
our list and number 10 fact is that
modern breeding is making them different
from their origins since Dobermans are
transitioning from guard dogs to loving
companions breeders are moving them away
from quite aggressive qualities although
Dobies have a softer personality trait
today all dogs are different and a lot
of their temperament is dependent on
proper training these dogs can be great
with families and children but only when
correctly trained and socialized a
Doberman is often described as being
alert bold and proud while at the same
time being extremely loyal and devoted
and affectionate dogs they are highly
intelligent with the downside being that
because they are so smart they can be
quite manipulative with it at times with
this said Dobermans are calm and
friendly forming strong bonds with their
owners they need to be handled and
treated with the sort of respect they
deserve and never treated harshly when
these dogs are shown time patience and
lots of kindness owners are rewarded
with a reliable canine companion and
ensure in the right hands and
environment a Doberman is a trustworthy
family pet and companion Dobermans are
not the best choice of first-time owners
because they need to be handled and
trained by people who are familiar with
their very specific needs because they
are so intelligent if a Doberman is not
handled correctly from the word go they
could take on the role of the alpha dog
in the household making them harder to
manage and live with but with all this
being said modern breeding is really
putting effort in to change them from
some of these potentially aggressive
origins people are focusing on lovely
kind loyal and affectionate temperaments
into their breeding stock which is
making the breed today a much more
loving companion than a fearless
aggressive guard dog but don’t be
mistaken these dogs are still capable of
amazing feats of guarding and protection
our number 9 fact is that there have
been Doberman drill teams the first of
many Dobermans drill teams started by
Tess hen Zola performed at the 1959
Westminister KC Dog Show at Madison
Square Garden in New York
city the group performed various
celebrations and sporting events and
showcased the dogs intelligence and
superior agility later
Rosalie Alvarez formed her own team that
toured for 30 years our eighth fact is
that they are insanely intelligent
Dobermans are the fifth smartest breed
on the entire planet and as they are so
highly intelligent they excel at all
sorts of canine activities which
includes competition obedience and
protection training as such they are
easy to train because they have a strong
desire to please the people they respect
and love however they need to be handled
gently and firmly by someone who’s
familiar with this type of highly
intelligent dog and their training and
socialization must start from a young
age bearing in mind that Dobermans can
be a bit fiery at times especially when
they’re excited this is one of the
reasons why they are not a good choice
for first-time owners who have little to
no experience in training this type of
dog bearing in mind the breed is
renowned for being strong-willed and
determined by nature puppies must be
taught the ground rules when young so
they understand the limits and
boundaries which also helps them
understand what an owner expects of them
bearing in mind that a smart dog will
always test these from time to time that
intelligence does come at a price mainly
to us as their human friends as
Dobermans are known for outsmarting
their trainers and getting easily bored
so make sure you’re prepared for this if
you’re planning on bringing your
Doberman into your home our seventh
factors that Dobermans are excellently
renowned war heroes Kurt the Doberman
was the first canine casualty in the
1944 battle of Guam during World War two
he went ahead of the troops and warned
them of the approaching Japanese
soldiers although an enemy grenade
killed that brave dog many soldiers were
saved from the same fate because of his
bravery Kurt became the first of 25 war
dogs to be buried in what is now known
as the United States Marine Corp swore
dog Cemetery on Guam a memorial
featuring a bronze statue occur has been
erected in the cemetery with the names
of the 24 other dogs inscribed on the
side after Susan ba hay was asked to
create it and she said to me this is
more subject more about love even though
it is a war monument she said I hope
that people can take a piece of love
back when they see that piece that
they’ll feel the same love we had for
the dogs and now
those dogs had for us now if you’re
anything like me that story very well
might I brought a tear to your eye so
make sure you all give your dogs an
extra big force when you next see them
to thank them for that beautiful
selfless loyalty that does make them the
best species on the planet and the best
pet by far a sick fact is they’re
interesting movie star history in the
70s they had their share of hokey films
but 1972’s the Doberman gang takes that
to the next level the movie as the
trailer voiceover explains is about six
savage Dobies with a thirst for cold
cash that leaves banks bone-dry
the dogs are all named after famous bank
robbers Dillinger Bonnie Clyde Pretty
Boy Floyd baby falls Mason and Ma Barker
using their persuasive barks and growls
these trained dogs managed to make off
with heaps of money if that concept
seems silly to you consider the fact
that there were two sequels and there’s
still talk of a remake of that film as
recently as 2010 don’t act like you’re
not going to go and check Netflix after
the video to see if it’s still there
however I’ll save you the effort and let
you know that unfortunately it isn’t
however I am dB IMDB ranks the film as a
solid and not to be sniffed at six out
of ten so silly as it might sound maybe
it’s worth checking out even if it is
just for the fun of it
a fifth act is that no job is too big
for these dogs Dobermans are extremely
athletic and intelligent dogs so no task
is out of their league and that does
include the job of lapdog even if you’re
less enthused about it
Dobies have been used for a variety of
jobs and sports including police work
scent tracking coursing diving search
and rescue therapy and guiding the blind
these truly wonderful dogs can really
turn their nose to anything that they
want to for fact is the ear and tail
docking does serve a purpose within the
breed since these dogs were bred to be
personal guards they needed to be ready
to engage in a fight some owners would
remove weak spots and the tail and ears
which can be pulled or torn to avoid
potential altercations
today most obermann’s are no longer used
for protection or specifically fighting
purposes but there are also some health
concerns to consider Dobermans tails are
very thin and sensitive and can break a
lot easier than other dogs
additionally floppy ears that they have
can prevent air flow from easily
entering in the ear canals which can
easily cause ear infections so some
owners will dock these appendages simply
to avoid future injuries or issues but
many see this process is cruel and
unnecessary and in certain countries
including Australia and here in the UK
they have been banned processes and as
you may or may not know that I do live
in the UK and not only is tail docking
and ear cropping illegal but it is
widely considered to be a very cruel
practice in our society there are
certain exceptions that allow some dogs
to he’ll still have this done but it is
very rare a close friend of mine has a
beautiful Connie Corso import that is
cropped and docked which is legal
because the practice happened in a
different country and I would be lying
if I said that I doubt that I think they
look far better being cropped and docked
but I also empathize with a cruelty
argument if it’s not something that
specifically needed this is a topic I’d
like to study in much more detail and
provide a dedicated video of short
documentary that has lots of experts
opinions on both sides of the argument
so that we can see what you guys think
but before we go into our top 3 facts I
thought I’d break down some pros and
cons of the breed if you’re thinking
about getting one or you’re just curious
so for me some of the positives about
Dobermans included they’re loyal devoted
companions and family pets they’re low
maintenance on the grooming front and
they’re impressive looking watch dogs
they’re highly intelligent and in the
right hands very easy to train they’re
moderate shedders and they’re perfect
choice for people who lead active
outdoor lives however some negatives of
the breed can include that they might
not be the best choice for first-time
dog owners and they’re better suited to
households with older children Dobermans
need plenty of exercise and they can be
dominant if not well socialized and
trained correctly some bloodlines have
been known to have temperament issues
and they can be aggressive towards over
dogs and animals Dobermans are sensitive
to loud sounds and noises so but worth
bearing in mind where it is you live and
they are predisposed to certain health
issues so that bills can be high but
let’s get into our top 3 facts about the
dopamine pincher and a third four top
fact is that a lot of dogs went into the
process Doberman did not take a lot of
notes on his breeding process and no one
is exactly sure what breeds went into
making the Doberman Pinscher
however some possible
believed to be in the mix include the
Rottweiler German Shorthaired Pointer
Weimaraners Manchester Terrier Great
Dane black intent area and that’s
greyhound and of these dogs some based
purely on looks I think it’s undeniable
that the Rottweiler German Shepherd and
Weimaraners are definitely in its
lineage but I’d love to be able to see
an exact percentage breakdown of all the
dogs in any lineage
maybe one day science will allow us to
do that but for now some cases like the
Doberman Pinscher a little bit of
speculation is required a second fact is
that speaking about the breeder is that
they were first bred by a tax collector
the history of the Doberman is
fascinating with the breed owing its
origins to a German tax collector named
hare karl-frederik Louie Doberman who is
credited for creating the breed in the
1800s he was not only a duck tax
collector but also a dog catcher too and
he lived in the region of the country
called Ferg in the area Hare Doberman
also worked as a night watchman and
being a dog captor he was a great
possession position to choose the right
sort of dogs needed for when he was
working as a watchman and tax collector
his main concern when developing the
perfect dog was that their character
rather than the dogs look or
conformation her Doberman wanted to
develop a courageous bold and
intelligent dog to work alongside him
the guard dogs would have boast having a
good nose and strong mouth of a natural
ability to guard and protect and he
began selectively breeding dogs to
produce all these traits and to begin
with the dogs he bred were known as
Doberman Huns they very quickly earned
the reputation had been strong reliable
and more than capable of hunting and
killing vermin to the actual breeds that
had Doberman used to create his dogs do
still remain a bit of a mystery as I’ve
already mentioned a little later in time
a breeder called Otto gola who knew her
Doberman confirmed how mongrel called
Snoopy was in fact the foundation dog
used to create the Doberman Hans
and that dog had smooth gray coat and
was crossed with a dog that belonged to
a butcher he also claimed a little later
that the breeds used to develop the
Doberman with a German Shepherd German
Pinscher Great Dane as well as a
short-haired gun dog and a Rottweiler
there is an article in a German magazine
dating 90 1898 that describes a man
called each who owned a gravel pit and
who had a female with a
and blue coat that look very much like a
pincher the article tells of how she had
mated with a butcher’s dog with a black
CO and tan markings that was fought to
be a cross between a butcher’s dog and a
sheepdog the author article goes on to
say how her Doberman mated the two dogs
with German pincers to produce a very
loyal and devoted guard dog which are
the ancestors the Dobermans we see today
and our number-one fact is that they’re
actually a fairly new breed and unlike
some dogs have been hanging around since
ancient times Dobermans are newer to the
scene the breed originated in Germany
and began to take form in the early
1880s making it less than a hundred and
fifty years old now that might not seem
like the number one fact but when you
really stop and think about it it’s not
longer too old to not only create but to
establish one of the most recognized
breeds in the world and it makes me
think that mr. Doberman really knew what
he was doing because consider it back in
the day when there was no information no
technology and travel was massively
limited he was still able to create this
breed that is now spread all around the
world and is one of the most recognized
breeds that most people will be able to
spot and tell you the name of it
straight away whether their dog lovers
or not click top left to see the entire
