Toy Group Judging | Crufts 2018

Boston Terriers Bichon Frise and some
other breeds so she’s wild widely
experienced here now here are the first
of our toy group breast debris winners
cost the first chance Irene the judge
gets to see what the brief judges have
sent through for her this the cheeky
little monkey face of the Affenpinscher
barking his way across the ring and
here’s the Australian silky Bichon Frise
[Applause]
and another Mediterranean white reach
the Balinese nice round of applause for
one of the most popular toy breeds the
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was fond
of Blenheim and here’s one of the
smallest contenders in the grybyx feet
long coat Chihuahua and the smooth coat
Chihuahua like his long coated cousin
but with no jacket on president the
distinctive outline of the Chinese
Crested
[Applause]
leaming white coat of the coton de
Tulear is the english toy terrier
elegant and dainty another very cheeky
characterful breed this the Griffon
Brucella and here’s the Havanese the
personification of dainty there’s the
italian greyhound and here comes the
japanese king the lovely smiling face of
the king charles spaniel here’s the love
Tinley little lion dog the maltese
the miniature pinscher here’s the
high-stepping miniature pinscher looks
like he’s ready for anything those
instantly recognizable butterfly ears
the Papillon and the dignified role of
the Pekinese
all right
[Music]
[Applause]
the little Pomeranian this one black and
here’s the sturdy multum in parvo of
race full of self-importance and the
last of the breeds in the toy group the
Yorkshire Terrier
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
quick walk down looking at the outline
reads first indicators of breed type
having the right proportions the right
top line a wide variety of copes size
and outline of course many of the toy
breeds were developed through the
miniaturization of sporting brains and
it was thought that the men of the house
gave the weakest of the puppies to their
wives to be companion dogs and with
selecting selective breeding this is how
they’re developed as companion dogs and
toy dogs
[Music]
and here’s the Afrin pincher the little
black devil dog from Germany developed
as a dog to keep down vermin got venture
in its ancestry and later a little bit
of Griffon blood that cheeky little face
is supposed to be monkey like and you
can really see it with this example and
although his handle is wearing a
different suit I’m sure you’ll recognize
that she won the group with a Scottie in
the terrier group and what an
achievement to actually get a second
better breed in a different group I
wonder if she can do it again today this
is Rebecca cross handling well these
have a ruff-ruff harsh coat they
shouldn’t be trimmed this YC is from
America where they’re going for a little
more trimming than is customary in the
United Kingdom it should have a floating
goose-step it’s a very straight leg but
a little bit of lift in its action there
great character dogs that’s a lot more
lift this is the equivalent of a canine
street urchin he’s dancing for his
supper a little after picture
[Music]
originally known as the Sydney silky the
Australian silky Terrier was developed
from Australian Terriers and Yorkshire
Terriers and is characterized by that
blue and tan coat which is flattened
fine and glossy good straight top-line
those wonderful prick ears now here’s
another one which was developed from
sporting breeds thought that the
Australian silky was developed by
crossing Australian Terrier with a
Yorkshire Terrier and they have Terry
instincts and still capable of keeping
down rodents the features of both of its
parents the silky coat and the blue and
tan colour both very important as we’ll
see in the yorkshire terrier later blue
and turn silky texture but also quite
sturdy hugely friendly little characters
quick and responsive they are that’s the
terrier in though
oh this is beautiful outline of the
Bichon Frise this is from one of the
white Mediterranean breed Bichon mean
the white dog and the frisée describes
the loose corkscrew curls of its coat
what makes it even more attractive is
the dark pigmentation on the nose and
round the eyes these little dark LoZ
it’s a happy lively little dog the Beast
Bichon with a really proud bearing as
long as he is tall level backed that
lovely long arched neck flows into a
surprisingly sturdy body under the coat
isn’t it it is and this is a this is a
very smart dog effortless movement
should be plenty of Drive although it
was originates in Europe it was
developed as a show breed in the United
States of America so that here we have
this rather sculptured look in its
native France it was a little more
rustic in its trim
[Music]
this is the Bolognese another member of
the Bichon white dog family but Italian
in origin and characterized by the most
extraordinary non-shedding flock coat
which means it falls into many separate
locks of hair and has virtually no
undercoat another with a black nose and
eyes and dark eye rims as well sturdy
and square says the breed standard they
are remarkably sturdy again one of the
white Bichon breeds that dark
pigmentation we see their lovely flocks
of coats they were developed in Bologna
in northern Italy and they soon became
very popular in the households of
fashionable society and they were often
carried around in little baskets by
their owners with ribbons around the
necks and he always appears like he has
a lovely wide head because his ears are
covered with fur now the first of the
royal spaniels it’s the Cavalier King
Charles and this is another breed read
down from sporting spaniels in the 16th
and 17th centuries and popular in the
court of Charles the first and Charles
the second this one a Blenheim color
this rich chestnut and white
lost its way refused a salute
they also come in Ruby which is a solid
red and absolutely gorgeous tricolor and
black and tan this is crazy two and a
half years old who’s come all the way
from Poland to compete a German club
world winner and Best in Show at
multiple Club shows in Germany so really
nice to see some different bloodlines
coming to compete at crafts and doing so
well and all of the colors have they had
their own names in the early days the
Duke of Marlborough and developed this
color the Blenheim from Blenheim Palace
the Duke of Norfolk developed the black
and tan the ruby was the last of the
colors to come into the year Cavalier
[Music]
this is the chihuahua the long coated
variety really it’s a great big dog in a
tiny little package small and dainty but
so full of character hails from Mexico
with that slightly apple domed skull
houses large round eyes that shouldn’t
protrude too much and is topped by
flared ears constantly on the move
reputedly the smallest breed in the
world that they don’t know that because
they’re full of their own importance
there are a Great Dane in the Chihuahua
sighs wonderful characters
[Music]
six-six
now it’s same in a smooth coat the
smooth coat of Chihuahua they have the
shared same standard this one has a
dense coat very important the tail
curves slightly over the back but sturdy
all over the smallest breed they should
be sturdy when I see advert for teacup
chihuahuas and I’d always disturbs me
because there’s no virtue in
exaggerating smallness you need
sturdiness
[Music]
the the Chihuahua was developed as a
show dog in America they became very
popular with the Hollywood stars and of
course that made them extremely popular
as household companions as they still
are and if you put your hands on that
coat it’s got a soft texture flat should
never be curly and can come in any color
except now that seems like an awfully
big bag of food for a very tiny dog
[Music]
though this is another breed with two
coat types either the hairless which is
what we see here where there is hair but
in very specific places on the dog’s
body I’ll just on the head and the feet
or the powderpuff which is covered in a
wonderful luscious veil of hair also
distinct types the deer type which is
racier and fine boned and the Kobe type
heavier in bone and body
[Music]
there’s an elegance to this breed and
especially the hairless variety here
with this mane of hair down its neck and
these little socks over its customs and
feet they’ve got remarkably long elegant
toes and this one they the heads ready
feet of pop to the terms that’s bad was
a popular as ladies bed warmers and so
attractive with that wonderful broken
pattern on the skin my little pony
coming towards us very alert
that’s always what my kids used to call
them my little pony
now this is a very distinctive outline
the coton de Tulear the Royal dog of
Madagascar first seen on the island of
Tula for many centuries and preserved
pure there it has a single cotton coat
and dark pigmentation quite a short for
face on the head framed by high-set ears
and underneath that coat surprisingly
deep bodied with the bat line just
rising over the law in the rear of the
dog it has a unique top line and the
tail characters a low set tailor than a
slight arch to the tail couch
seen here exemplified here this one has
come from America as in and so this is a
very cosmopolitan group we’ve got here a
lot of the winners coming from overseas
shows the international repute of profs
dog show lovely movement as well smart
free striding super this one was top
winner in the breed in America last year
so we had a great wind today
[Music]
the candle flame ears of the English toy
terrier the oldest of Britain’s native
toy breeds once known as the miniature
black and tan terrier dates all the way
back to the 16th century but in danger
of extinction today they’re on one of
the vulnerable breeds alert and able
able to acquit himself against rat’s
nest
despite that dainty size and this is
another breed bred down from sporting
dogs bred down from the Manchester Terry
the sort of miniature Manchester Terrier
which is how they’re known in America
they’re fine boned and dainty but share
the same characteristics of this black
and tan coloration love little thumb
prints on the tan part of their front
lengths an extended action of an
extended drop the little rise over the
loin and as you say Jessica these
distinctive ears shaped like candle
flames
young extended trot and those little
thumb prints in the tap
[Music]
now the cop enos of the Brussels Griffon
this is a breed which was developed in
Belgium it comes in two coats and here
we have the rough coated dogs of this
type was seen right back in the 15th
century in the paintings of the old
masters they were bred to keep down on
rats and rodents in in the stables Kabhi
balanced and square this breed and this
one is an absolutely delightful
character they hail from Belgium
originally with the touch of the
Affenpinscher about him sturdy and
compact in his round skull strong under
jaw
and great carriage a hard top line and
high set sail I just look at that cheeky
little face your beautiful big dark eyes
big nostrils important in this a shorter
face dogs the national dog of Cuba
called the habanero the Havanese small
sturdy and lively slightly longer than
tall good level back that head is quite
broad with a slightly rounded skull and
should always have dark pigment lovely
large almond-shaped eyes the breed was
developed in the United States and many
people fled from Cuba with the from the
communist regime and took their dogs
with them and that’s where they were
developed as show dogs they’re wonderful
free moving slightly rectangular with a
slight lift in the top-line come in a
variety of colors but the texture has to
be of the coat has to be silky yes never
any curl maybe a slight wave and they
come in just about any color imaginable
to this one’s come from Sweden to
compete at Crufts today so another of
our foreign competitors the Havanese
you know now for a picture of elegance
here we have the outline of the Italian
Greyhound this is a sight hound in
miniature and another bred down from
whippets and greyhounds took the elegant
fine bone but what beautiful refinement
in the head
[Music]
those delicate folded ears described as
rose-shaped we should have that arching
top line very characteristic of the
breed a deep narrow chest short fine
coat brood with a velvet pad usually
these are foreign bones but it has to be
strong bone and very typical is
high-stepping action we see here one of
the features of the breed breed specific
movement a greyhound in miniature the
italian greyhound
a true aristocrat this Japanese chin
with that distinctive head short muzzle
large broad slightly rounded skull and
dark eyes framed in a profusion of coat
smart and compact the first chin was a
gift from the Empress of China to the
Empress of Japan now the beautiful
padding in this girl this cushioning in
the muzzle broadhead quite copy in
nature
silky coated the word chin means
cat-like and they are scrupulously clean
they have a little bit of white in the
corner of the eye and it has quite a
high stepping action really stylish move
at this one this the black and white is
the more frequently seen comer color but
they also come in orange and a red and
white little Japanese chin
and here’s the other royal spaniel the
King Charles Spaniel we saw the Cavalier
earlier this is same route blood but
more domed in the skull selectively bred
for that here the tricolor shorter in
the muzzle but still read down from
working spaniels gentle and reserved
breed the Charlie little wag of the tail
therefore the judge refined and yet they
should be copy and quite sturdy
shouldn’t they Frank they should indeed
and again this one the Cavalier was the
original prototype for the Royal spaniel
but the fashion for shorter face greens
in Victorian society bred to this type
becoming more popular so in 1926 Crofts
offered a special prize for the original
type but this the King Charles has been
maintained the breeders have done great
work on this temperament is improved and
soundness
[Music]
you can see why this is called the
little lion dog can’t you the love Chen
hailing from France intelligent and
affectionate strong and active breed
with a proud head carriage and that
great big mane of hair around its head
that gives it the lion like appearance
[Music]
these again were used as ladies
comforters they were companion dogs and
they used to go to bed with them and it
said that the clipping of the hind
quarters made the dogs warmer and warmer
as comforters at bedtime perhaps that’s
a bit of canine focus and that coat is
long and silky it can have a slight wave
to it but it’s unusual in being single
it doesn’t have an undercoat underneath
it and can come in just about any color
the quarters don’t come like that
naturally they’re shaved off and a
little plume left on the end of the tail
nice free mode movement from the little
lion dog
[Music]
and here’s the Maltese another of the
Mediterranean white dogs and it’s
remained unchanged for centuries there
are records of this in Malta in the
folklore Museum of Malta which showed
dogs looking just like this three
centuries ago
beautiful dark pigmentation dark halos
wrung the eyes breed features very
distinctive the coat of the Maltese long
and straight just being groomed back
there into perfection before the dog
comes off the table to move silky to the
touch it can have slight lemon markings
but always with that contrasting black
pigment should be copy and compact and
carrying this level top line and I set
tail and carried over the back what is
very much prized is the dark
pigmentation which sets off the the
crisp white color and often the judges
will look at the pads of the dogs the
underneath feet either the dark
pigmentation is carried on there
beautiful beautiful expression
developed in Germany from the larger
pincher type dogs a century ago this is
the miniature pinscher elegant and yet
surprisingly sturdy and an enthusiastic
guard in fact enthusiastic about just
about everything these are really
characterful little dogs this
wedge-shaped head and sharply pricked
ears again this is a miniaturization we
saw the Doberman Pinscher in the working
group and the pincher also here is the
smallest variety and they were bred down
and can still do the job of its area
keeping down rodents we should be
looking for a nice square outline in
this little dog floating back line from
the withers to the tail and they’re
surprisingly deep chested for such a
little doggy look at those little cat
like feet true Hackney action yes it is
in this the UK standard us for a high
stepping action in the continent that’s
rather different American England what’s
this hike up in front and in this slight
slope to the top line from withers down
to the tail which we see ideally they’re
lovely outline the miniature pinscher
Oh
[Music]
his thought to be a franco-belgian breed
and what a picture this makes the spread
wings of a butterfly define the Papillon
it’s a dainty blood butterfly dog from
France and Belgium silky coated we see
the spread years here they come in two
varieties the drop eared is called the
Fallon which means moth but this is the
more popular variety elegant and dainty
the French name for it is the ape annual
knot which means the dwarf spaniel so
again this hints that is is bred down
from sporting spaniels fine boned and
dainty this lovely silky coat but again
all of these little toy breeds have to
be sound it’s no good just having small
size and daintiness that have to be
healthy and sound and fit to move well
and live well
absolutely light on his toes the
Papillon just as his name suggests free
flowing positive movement
another true aristocrat
a Pekinese dating back to the Tang
Dynasty in China and owned by members of
the imperial court no commoner actually
allowed to own one the head is wider
than it is deep and very characteristic
large round dark eyes heart-shaped ears
and a great amount of coat framing the
face we see the judge picking up there
to feel the weight that should pick up
heavy for their size strongly bone and
wide chested and underneath that coat a
very distinctive waist broad chest but
narrowing to the waist heavy bones large
flat feet the is a pear-shaped body
they’re wide in front never at the waist
and a narrow up back end so this is why
they have this distinctive Pekinese role
as we see here the weight of the dog is
largely in the chest and front it’s
desirable that the coach is not
excessive and should just frame and show
off the outline of the dog this one a
big winner Best in Show or breeds last
year the first Pekinese bitch for many
years to do this
while the in today
people
the Pomeranian now being looked at rare
to see a black usually orange or red is
the popular winning color but black here
is a beautiful specimen perky eyes
they’re bred down from the German Spitz
which we saw in the utility group
earlier and became very popular in Queen
Victoria’s time indeed Queen Victoria
had some of the breed and they exhibited
them at dog shows something of the foxy
look about the Pomeranian a compact
buoyant little pocket rockets have a toy
dog this should be fine bold and dainty
and have these buoyant quality on the
moon it’s like a little ball on legs
really they’re so full of character that
coats double harsh and straight on top
softer underneath with the
characteristic neck frill they’re the
smallest of the Spitz breed which means
they’re short back to high set sail and
a little bit of a wedge-shaped head what
a wonderful expressions is what’s not
[Music]
another of the shorter phrase faced
breeds misses the pug that came
originally from China by the East India
Company imported into Europe in the
1500s there are such charming little
dogs compact and kabhi well muscled but
with great dignity all through that
large round head short muzzled and a
little wrinkled around those dark eyes
one of the slogans for the Pug is multum
in parvo says the standard which means a
lot of dog in a small space they’re very
substantial broad in the body short nice
level top-line high set curl tail it’s
thought that they were taken from China
by the Dutch East India Company traders
and taken back to Holland and popular
with William of Orange and he brought
into England when he came to the throne
[Applause]
the beautiful steel blue coat and the
tan furnishings of the yorkshire terrier
important features of the breed the
breed again is bred down from working
Terriers it’s thought that Scottish
workers coming to work in the mills of
Yorkshire brought the Terriers with them
a little bit of Skye Terrier blood and
black and tan terrier and they were
developed and miniaturized to the
Yorkshire Terrier we have today the
father of the breeze was a dog called
Huddersfield Ben who was born in 1865
and the distribution of colors in that
perfect coat are extremely important
aren’t they Frank steel blue body coat
in three shades of tan in the tan
furnishings the deeper color near the
muzzle fading to a golden tan at the
ends relatively small head but always
would button eyes a lovely bright
expression contacting body nicely level
top-line on the move just listen to the
crowd appreciating that York
because look here is a terrier in Taurus
catcher
look at that wonderful attitude full of
confidence and marvelous top line who
say it’s a toy that could still do a
Terriers work so re McManus has had a
chance to look at all these toy group
best to breed winners now she has to
make her shortlist who’s going to be in
it so walking down the line taking in
all of these Best of Breed winners
reminding herself of the quality that
she’s had her hands on it isn’t just
about looking is it Frank it’s about
feeling because of course many of these
breeds are very heavy coated and only
the group judge has had her hands inside
there and she has to believe what her
hands tella under that skilful grooming
I think this is a very strong group
she’s got a lot of really excellent mr.
breed winners here and many of them from
overseas so it’s a very exciting to see
these new dogs here in the United
Kingdom
so up to the head of the line who’s
coming out firstly very smart Bichon
Frise I like that very much and I
thought our judges would like it and out
comes the smooth coat Chihuahua
cheekiness personified and here’s the
English torch area and the Gryphon
oh I’m so glad the Griffons in there and
the Italian Greyhound and the puppy on
that wonderful dainty Papillon with an
excellent carriage and the Pomeranian
and the Yorkshire Terrier so this is
going to be a very close decision with
these lovely dogs she’s brought nine of
them out well I think it was quite
difficult to sort it down to nine others
that I’m sure she likes as well so now
we’re going to see them move again
because of course at this level they’re
all Best of Breed winners we’re looking
for the performance and what a
performance here from the Bichon Frise
and he’s come all the way from Lithuania
to win this marvelous the little smooth
coat Chihuahua Bob who’s only come from
Oxfordshire but we won’t hold that
against him fabulous attitude just look
at that tail
and here’s the extended throught of the
English toy terrier very elegant dainty
wedge-shaped head extremely smart and a
lovely extended drop there oh this
little dog is such a character
the Griffon Brucella wow this is Ricky
they come from Sweden to complete just
two years old so were still young dog
he’s a more established winner the
Italian Greyhound elegance and the high
stepping action as elegant and delicate
as Dresden China this egg the little
puppy or the butterfly dog gleaming in
coat in super bloom and I think this is
going to have a very good chances to put
in immaculate performs here
a little gladden Pomeranian boxer
features
[Applause]
[Music]
full of character this harsh of standing
coat in this high set tale and here’s
the self-importance of the perb striding
along a little burrow into his hand
quarters which is typical of the breed
coming from those big ribs this tightly
twisted tale type twist to the tale and
from spaying the last of our finalists
that wonderful yorkshire terrier just
listen to the crowd appreciating this
dog so Irene McMahon is taking one last
look the boards have come out into their
spotlights it’s a joy for a judge to
have a lineup like this but also a
headache because it’s very close
decision well this is the sixth of our
group finalists who is it going to be Oh
Frank I think you might have been right
it’s the patio is going to take the toy
group very the de l’espace that’s a Sean
Carroll from Dublin a very he’s in very
expensive but he looks quite overcome
with this wind
[Applause]
oh how wonderful that gorgeous is a very
fond brew salwar goes into the second
spot love the character of that little
toy for third place it’s the English
Gorge area there we are the elegance
therefore Suzuka winner Tory’s one of
our vulnerable breeds taking the third
spot in the toy group here at cross 2018
the little duck Pomeranian gets fourth
spot in his very strong group so that’s
a very nice lineup but it was the
