Using positive reinforcement and leash pressure – Dog Training with America’s Canine Educator
what’s up guys tom davis here america’s
canine educator this is a quick video on
a young golden retriever named Chloe who
has been dealing with a lot of different
leash pressure difficulties and or just
basic obedience in general now this
video isn’t as informative as my other
videos but I do believe that this video
can help some of you guys at home
dealing with similar issues

and rewarding bad behavior to try to get
around the issue okay so what happens is
watch what she starts to do see her
tongue go and her dough’s going right so
she’s an animal and when you barter with
food to an animal you’re always gonna
get a good deal and so with that because
they’re gonna start calming down watch
what she lucious it oh so she’s
basically going to give me that food
faster give it to me faster and what
more right so this is not the way to
develop a relationship with the dog you
may train with food but you never want
to start going you’re crazy
see this this is nothing to do with our
relationship she’s going to meet up to
it and if I put this down that’s what we
do right so do you think she cares about
me absolutely not so I’m setting the
tone for how we’re going to do this
training with her and it’s very clear
that if food comes out she goes
but if I ask her sit she’ll do it but
wait until a second she was give me it
now not good it’s it’s it’s bartering of
that behavior and I’m not saying no the
reason why all this behaviour happening
is a lack of discipline because there’s
no consequence for doing any of it and
that’s what a lot of I would say I would
say a good percentage of people having
issues with their dog is relationship
and discipline which means you don’t
know your dog you don’t know how to
communicate to them and you don’t have a
way to tell them they’re doing something
wrong and if you don’t have a way to
tell if somebody’s are doing something
wrong then it’s all rainbows and
butterflies and nothing it’s better does
it make sense
sure so I’m gonna do a little leash
pressure with her and I want you to see
the difference in her behavior after I
tell her what she can and can’t do she’s
gonna go oh you know what you’re doing
and she’s gonna like that like canines
in general pilots wolves domesticated
dog they need somebody who can tell them
what they can and can’t do it if they
don’t they lose their mind they’ll get
into trouble well jump fences they’ll
eat don’t do that bikini possibly can
they need somebody either and now it’s
our responsibility because we’re pet
owners to say hey this is what you can
do it’s there’s something and if you
lock that you get you get what you get

now a couple key things I want to point
out of what I’m doing first thing is is
I want to be 90% positive 10% negative
or punishment one way shape or form or
another
punish that doesn’t mean pain punishment
just means we’re putting a negative or
pressure over the dog when they do it
something back okay so when I’m working
a dog I’m only negative when they’re
doing something wrong and but that’s if
I’m good at what I do that should only
be a little bit of the time right so
that’s something to think about too is a
lot of people get into working with dogs
and then they’re like I don’t want to
correct my dog I don’t want to
discipline my dog and everyone else is
like I’ll do anything to stop this
behavior but there’s a lot of people out
there that just think that when you do
use a tool or you do use pressure it’s
constant and it’s torture of course it
would be you know what I mean it’s like
pulling over every single person that’s
going to speed limit giving them tickets
no no I’m doing the right thing now I
got my speed ticket you know and I went
to court and I take that money are you
the right thing yeah so when I’m working
with her good colonel positive 90%
positive 10% negative at best good girl
well done all positive right so I’m
giving her verbal praise there’s no
pressure on the leash and I’m teaching
her and I’m molding her sculpting her
into the dog that I want through
discipline and pressure does that make
sense so I’m gonna teach you how to do
this but I just those are some really
big points that I like to talk about
when anybody comes in here or anybody
that that watches what I do I don’t want
them to look at the the work that I do
and say look at the collar that’s really
that’s just that’s just in case that’s
just like why do we why do we have dogs
walking down the road when it’s scary
out why do we have
why do we have laws these things are
just in case why do we have fire
detectors like you know what I mean like
it’s just in case something happens and
a lot of times I teach people that it’s
really not about your dog it’s about the
person that comes in that gets really
excited and then you go that’s why we
use tools that’s why we have things to
help us manage certain situations that
could be really bad but we never really
have to use them but if we if we need to
go there so the biggest thing that
you’ve probably messed up on is you
didn’t instill discipline and you didn’t
instill any any consequences early on to
be in the relationship but she’s still
really dumb that’s all when I’m with her
this is what she wants right so this is
the destination she wants to get to but
how can I get her there without any
issues good girl and it’s just
consistency yes good girl
I don’t mind any of this this is seven
month old golden the behavior this is it
you know issue the mouth excited sure
this is it this is why we get this would
make somebody very happy see how she’s
getting a bit excited okay
so then you end it okay now we’re on
this is considered almost like at the
management technique because I don’t
want to change the personality of the
dog at all right and you wouldn’t want
they that’s where I gotta go that’s
right right so I’m managing the things
that I’m dealing with right because I
can’t say please calm down or you won’t
get any attention it doesn’t work I’ll
teach you how to say that Taurus you
simply like again getting her to your
destination of like please love me
and in a minute you find that she’s
getting over stimulated or you know
starts jumping remove it take it away
and then don’t just stand there go pee
now what you know some of that
aggression that exercise
[Music]
no boundaries and that’s really what I
wanted to just clearly point out in this
video from start to end there’s a
tremendous day and night difference with
the dog’s behavior personality and of
course the leash pressure
hmm so if this video is helpful to you
