WARNING! Extremely Controversial! Positive Dog Training vs Negative Dog Training!

today I want to bring up something that
happens every day and people in the
public would never know this unless they
did dog training all day seven days a
week year after year after year after
year like I have so positive training
negative training and I just want to
give a little lowdown on what happens in
reality when you’re doing this for a
living and what the public really is
asking of us so there’s two paths here
I’m just going to give you as two
examples
we’re working with two Malinois puppies
at the same time same age we started the
same week
they’re both now about 12 weeks old so
you have Lola and you have calluses
collisions the one we’ve been showing on
YouTube with her bite work her obedience
training with the clicker and positive
this and then we have Lola that we
started the same way
but with Lola this is exactly what
happens every day of our training lives
so both we’re starting with the clicker
and food and I advised to stay positive
young as early as possible only because
we want protection training for both in
the end so I try not to tamper too much
with any negative training when that’s
the end in mind I don’t I’m trying not
to dip the dog at all but when you know
what you’re doing it’s you’ll get over
that quickly and you’ll avoid that but
that was the path that we started with
we’re both so calissa’s right now still
here you’re gonna see this is her
advancing her positive skills and then
you have Lola here where we had to take
a different route very quickly because
this is what happens all the time every
day with the majority of the public the
positive training you have to have
patience and a lot of patience if you
want great results in the end but it
will take a while to get reliability now
in my system because I know this to
master a positive training my own
puppies all whether they’re going to be
great obedience dogs or protection dogs
in the end I start there from that
foundation training with clickers and
positive but always no matter what I’m
gonna end up later going to a little bit
of pressure training Jen with the remote
collars because I want Jen
pressure training with no bad results
and that’s why you see my dogs that do
things they are very quick about their
obedience and very spirited sit yeah sit
down finish them sit that’s hard for the
public to understand and our new clients
that when we do this it’s hard for them
to understand that what the electric the
remote collar will make them spirit and
do things well yes when you do it well
this is wherever so confused they will
be turned on by the collar and love to
play to the remote collar electric
collar right oh clients will tell you
that a client yesterday those Roland
happy tail wagging the husband was
against the collar and all the sudden
she was having a great time you have to
tap in the remote collar and having her
do things for the first time he got out
of that very quickly and became a fan
because seeing how happy the dog was and
not believing that she was wagging her
tail all over the place and playing on
the ground like she’s never done before
so happily with remote collar training
very difficult for humans to grasp when
we understand that that’s why we’re in a
unique category in dog training and we
get different results than most because
we understand the psychology of dogs and
what really turns them on but back on
track
Lola’s owner could not take any more
this gradual process of positive they
need results now whether or not
protection later or not whether that
happens they want that but they cannot
deal with right now her pulling her not
listening for real
unless there’s treats involved and
everybody goes to that with positive and
I completely understand that so you’re
going to see here Lola now for the first
time so we’re going to put into all the
polling I’m going to we’re teaching her
so this is her healing the second class
after teaching her remote collar
training
at 10 weeks old now she’s about 12 weeks
old in this video
so here you see perfect healing sitting
automatically already every time he
stops following the leg everywhere and
that’s the beauty through pressure
training but all of our clients when we
get there most assume that they want
positive training we we start that if we
do
I generally don’t anymore with the
public unless it’s certain cases like
calissa’s that’s protection in the end
because our clients are not going to sit
there and do positive training and go
through a process with this and not have
the dog listen for real and that’s what
they’re paying you for so even though
they start off wanting you to do
positive they realize quickly this is
not going to work for reality this gonna
be a long long road so quickly we have
to turn over something else so that’s
why normally I don’t even touch positive
with my own clients we just want results
we get it done we get things beautifully
and everybody’s happy and the dog
listens for real even as a young young
puppy but this is what happens daily
that people don’t see especially if
you’re not a professional trainer and
that’s why I had to start knowing
everything because owners then start
going oh it’s not working it doesn’t
work they don’t only does things when
there’s treats around right
they don’t have patience the public
they’re not professional dog trainers
they need results now they want to walk
the dog now they want the dog to come
when they tell them now no matter how
old the dog is it doesn’t matter to them
they want adult results even at ten
weeks old
right so you’re going to see here two
Lola’s doing her remote come
here we’re doing with Lola also her
downs were started positively her sister
started positively but now we’re adding
the remote to it and we’re doing remote
downs remotes it’s
and here you can see Lola after the
class of we were doing the Downs oh sit
she’ll still play with the tugs
at home she’s a maniac on the towel
still it has not broken her drive she’s
just fine even though she’s going
through the pressure side of training
instead of the positive side so all is
good everything will be fine in the end
it doesn’t matter two different roads
two different routes we’re going to get
to the end of the same just in a
different pathway not one is bad not one
is better it’s just different so until
next time
